In this discussion about the book "History Men," the conversation centred around the controversial but rather popular figure in history writing, Sir Jadunath Sarkar. The view of Sir Jadunath about history writing is that it is an intensely personal experience, between the historian and the pieces of evidence that he or she has gathered. He was a true historian in terms of sticking to the basics, that is learning from the primary sources. He was not biased but rather impartial in telling the history to the extent, that for him whether it showed his own country in a good or poor light was immaterial. Yet, still, he had shown some predisposition for narrating mughal history from his perspective. Is the narration of history often influenced by the inclination of the historian to his or her contemporary political situations?
About The Speakers:
Swapan Dasgupta is a former MP in the Rajya Sabha, a Padma Bhushan laureate, and an illustrated journalist.
Dr T.C.A. Raghavan is the former Indian High Commissioner to Pakistan and Singapore. He is now a history enthusiast; and author of Attendant Lords, The People Next Door, and History Men.

I have read his books. Specially the books on rajputana fights against Mughals. Guys, if you want to learn all those battles and kings who successfully repelled Mughals but are not mentioned by NCERT and leftists, DEFINITELY read Jadunath Sarkar. His books are available online for free.

@@hungrybeastt I have no idea about that. As far as the books are concerned, they are highly researched and contain an elaborate documentation along with citations. I have no idea about his ideological leanings though.

the most revered Historians of Bharatvarsa ie INDIA were Sir Jadunath Sarkar and Dr Ramesh Chandra Mazumdar ..others are only following their steps..

Sir Jadunath Sarkar was not only a historian, but a great Historiographer. He is rightly regarded as "Edward Gibbon" of South Asia.

Sir Jadunath Sarkar obtained 720 out of 800 . 90%. In MA English ! Fabulous ! He was followed by Rajendra Lal Mitra. Then came the trio : Majumdar, Roychowdhury and Datta. My knowledge of Indian history is based on the trio's book : Advanced History of India.

I have read Advanced History of India by Majumder, Roychowdhury and Datta. It came as a surprise to me in 1983, when I came to Delhi. At D.U to my knowledge not many were aware of these authors. They read Romila Thapar and used it as a text book for the U.P.S.C exam.

Manucci wrote a first hand account of Mughal courts during Shahjahan and Aurangzeb era ! He spent his life in India and JN Sarkar referred to him for his own accounts of Aurangzeb !!!!

Life &Letters of Sir Jadunath Sarkar Edited by Dr Hari Ram Gupta MA ( History)PhD,D.Litt .Preface by Dr Hari Ram Gupa(Late) Hoshiarpur,10May,1957 Gives a first hand account.Dr Gupta had stayed at Sarkar's Residence .Interaction with leading historians in life of Sir Sarkar are narated .It truely brings out character of Sir Sirkar .

I dont know about NCERT under congress but guys I studied my school book history under left front rigime in Bengal. And I can assure you that there were many quotes of RC Majumdar and JN sarkar on many Indian historical events as well as Romila thapar. Im not a leftist but I can say they didn't remove these people from school books atleast in Bengal.

Sir Jadunath Sarkar CIE (10December 1870-19 May 1958)was a prominent Indian Bengali historian.He was honoured by British with a Companion of the Order of the Indian Empire CIE and knighted in 1929Birthday Honours list.He was invested with his Knighthood at Simla by the acting Viceroy,Lord Goschen,on 22nd August,1929.

Not exactly erased, because some of the leftist historians do admire the works of nationalist historians like R. C. Majumder and Jadunath Sarkar. Like Swapan Dasgupta said that Dipesh Chakrabarty, who is a subaltern historian has written a great book on Jadunath Sarkar. Even a hard-core Marxist historian like Irfan Habib often mentions the names of the historians like R. C. Majumder, Jadunath Sarkar, and others of that era with great respect. So, I don't think that all the leftist historians have questioned their scholarship or tried to disregard their works.

My father was a pupil of Prof Kalikinkar Dutta one of the co- author of An Advanced History of India along with Raychaudhri and R.C Mazumdar. ( Prof Dutta was one of Jadunath Sarkar's pupil). Prof Dutta had a very low opinion of Pandit Nehru 's historical knowledge. But after all he was the Prime minister of India and what ever he uttered was worth in gold . This was his observation.

The biggest drawback of Sir Jadunath Sarkar is that he did not touch the opium trade of Mughal India and how Aurangzeb pushed back opium merchants of the East India Company, particularly Childe's War.

@@pagan-540 Read Irfan Habib. Habib began life as a good historian before becoming what he is today. And some articles published by the Indian History Congress by Sushil Chaudhury, B Gupta.Aurangzeb sending Murshid Quli Khan was to curb the opium trade in Bengal and take stern measures against the English East Indian Companies.Read them. In fact that is why I dislike Sir Jadunath Sarkar. He does not mention the only one good thing that Aurangzeb did. The British did not give a Knighthood for free! He kept quiet over the opium issue!

The way historians are free to interpret what they read from bakhars badshahnamas etc And if every era will have its own historians with their interpretation Then we too have our present day interpretation That No 1) Shivaji was for Hindupadpadshahi No 2) Only for the vassal Rajput kings of Mughals , Marathas were aliens . For that matter any king even a neighbouring one is an alien . The difference between Islamic invaders who became badshahs And Hindu kings was the sole desire of Islamists for spreading Islam thus the mass conversion & killings of civilians . ( Somnath temple plunder and mass murder of Brahmins and civilians by Gazni was Sole desire of spreading Islam along with loot Else why did he always destroy the temple everytime he attacked .) So forget the baloney of historians and remember who you are dealing with . No Muslim king was wo a burning desire to spread Islam Hindu kings fought with each other for land ofcourse or power not to destroy the temples and culture .
