I compare two nice Sansui Receivers
One 11 watt amplifier the other 12 watts, but they both sound much bigger that these figures imply.
Both nice smooth and sweet sounding units with plenty of detail
One thing I did notice after shooting the video, is that the Volume, Bass, Treble, Balance Knobs are slightly bigger on the 441

Fascinating! My brother and I chose the 441 for my father 50 years ago, hooked up to a Pioneer PL12D turntable on one side and a pair of Monitor Audio MA7 speakers on the other. He kept it all until he died 15 years ago and I inherited the 441 and the MA7s from him, everything in great condition. That combination was first pressed into service in my fitness room and is now in the home office. The PC feeds into tape-in - perfect for KZfaq videos 😊 - and I stream digital audio into the aux input from a home-built Raspberry Pi 3B+ with an IQaudio DAC+ hat running Volumio. The 441's performing as beautifully as ever though, now I'm retired, I'm thinking of having it recapped sometime. I don't have any vinyl any more but I use the FM radio occasionally and it also sounds great. Thanks for reminding me why we originally chose it half a century ago!

Thanks for the comment. Great to hear that the 441 and MA7's are still bringing enjoyment to this day a testament to how well these were made, especially the 441 with all its components. They both have really repaid their investment back then. The 441 is a very good sounding receiver and a big favourite of mine. As for the recapping I would only undertake that if you think the sound has gotten a bit duller or harsher over time. The caps used in these units seem to hold up well. my 441 still sounds great. I did recap the 331 recently as it started to sound a little harsh on the top end. Michael

Great comparison... but the 441 it's a great performer. I've a 441 Sansui and it's a magical receiver. Sounds extremely clear and crystaline with my Castle Durhams mk1 speakers, and also quite well with b&w DM4 ... I love it, sounds very very better than other more expensive and powerful amps. It's quite superior, for example... than my other sansui au 4400 in sound terms... 441 Has got famous and badly famous STK transistors... SUPERB QUALITY! For me, a gem in my vintage hifi collection!

The 441 is certainally a great receiver, one I still have in the collection, I just favoured the 331 a tad because it gave a slightly more 3d and open sound. Would not sell either of mine that is for sure..

Great comparison. I have both and really enjoy 331, although I've not listened to the 441 as much, but I find it very similar. Both have wonderful stereo imaging, really nice phono stages and great tuners. They sound fantastic through my 4408's, and are surprisingly loud and have great bass response despite their low power ratings. I have other amps and receivers, but I keep going back to the 331.

Thanks, These are 2 nice receivers, really brought to my attention by Stereo Review X, he seemed to favour the 441, but I sway for the 331, matter of taste here I suppose. But both very capable considering the low wattage they are.

I also prefer the 331 because I don't have the 441 ;). The line inputs confused me. I assumed the rear most inputs were the right channel but when I played The Beatles Norwegian Wood they were singing from my left speaker. When they are supposed to be on the right channel. So I switched the interlink to left on the rear most input to get the Beatles to sing right. My bout with FM reception is that I need better selectivity for my favorite station to get undistorted reception. Neighboring channels are interfering. I have a Sansui TU-517 Tuner that gets that right, but that is downstairs attached to the AU-317.

I had the exact same trouble with the line inputs as the marking seems to be the opposite. I am pretty lucky with reception, must be pretty near the stations I listen to, though do use a plastic strip wire type dipole downstairs

The 441 also had a visible external antenna on the back panel. Maybe the 331 has an internal antenna, I don't know. Maybe that could account for some of the difference in reception.

great review. I have a 441 and 221 . 221 is more spacious and 3d the 441 is more detailed . both great

Hi Charles, alas I had to let the Sanyo Go along with a lot of my review items due to lack of space. if I had a big free storage locker I would pretty much keep everything that is for certain.

Hi John, I tried then both on a few pairs speakers, The Dittons CS5's, MS Ti35 and 55's, Celestion 3's and a loaned pair of Bowers and Wilkins 685. I will try and get to reversing the midrange on the Ditton CS5's as someone is picking them up in a few weeks

@@johnsweda2999 I still like the CS5's was hoping to have some more time to tinkle around with them, a bloke got in touch who is a Celestion fan. Apparently he has a large collection of them and wanted to add this to it, but its still a bit up in the air at the moment as I do not want to post them. The Ti35's sounded really nice, just bought out the airiness of the 331 for me the Bowers and Wilkins 685 sounded nice to on the 331 . Both sets work nicely on the 441 as well. while the 55Ti's were probably my favourite on the 441

@@MichaelYates they had to get hold of then the CS5 ? wouldn't mind them myself but I don't know where you are up North Leeds Yorkshire, I wouldn't go past Birmingham. He's offered you a good price then sounds like!

I am in Essex, Funny the bloke who is interested is in Birmingham, he is trying to arrange transport. As I am away next week we have left it till the following week for him to arrange something. I pretty got back what they cost with caps as well.
