SANTA FE 2926 MAKES ITS FIRST RUN UNDER STEAM

ATSF 2926 is a 4-8-4 Northern-type steam locomotive built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1944. It ran for the Santa Fe until late 1953 and was put on display at Coronado Park in Albuquerque, NM. In 1999 the New Mexico Steam Locomotive & Railroad Historical Society was formed to restore the engine and use it for excursion service. For nearly 20 years the engine has been restored at its site along 6th Street.
Finally, on July 14, 2021, the engine made its first run on its own, though it was using compressed air. On July 24, it made its first run under steam for the first time in nearly 68 years! Here we see the engine making one of several runs down the site track. Enjoy, as more is to come!

Hopefully the 2926 will be reunited with the 3751 for a publicity photo one day, after 3751 finishes it's rebuild-overhaul maintenance process in the future.

Must've been quite the sight to see in person seeing a nearly 8-decade-old steamer moving under its own power for the first time in nearly 7 decades.

Good to see an old friend up and going. I lived on the Santa Fe right of way in Southern California and the 2900 class were frequent visitors. On occasion I'd see a 5000 class also. Both were fine locomotives. Thanks for sharing and good luck in the future.

Good thing BNSF will allow this behemoth on their trackage. Cause this engine needs a break-in run on a freight train. Then it will be tested to see if it can handle excursion trains! The 2926 is rrready for duty!

Most likely it will operate on the NMRX Albuquerque Subdivision first with the assistance of BNSF.

Probably won’t happen. 2926 I’m told by members 2926 needs a insurance policy required by BNSF to operate on the transcon. Which unfortunately is not in their budget.

3751 has yet to even get a hydro. SBRHS has been silent since March.

Nope, that title still goes to N&W J 611. In fact, the N&W J class has the highest tractive effort of any 4-8-4 ever built.

@@09JDCTrainMan I realize now that the title still belongs to 611 because everyone seems to have ignored the fact that the 2900s had limited cutoff. Wikipedia and steamlocomotive.com are both incorrect about the 2900s’ tractive effort. Cutoff was limited to 70% according to the drawings, which gave 66,000 lbf of tractive effort. I don’t think the Wikipedia page is correct on 611’s tractive effort either though, 80,000 lbf gives 3.6 factor of adhesion which is unacceptably low. No railroad would ever intentionally build a conventional 2 cylinder locomotive with factor of adhesion that low.

2022, steam locomotives running along side EMDs and GEs, haulin just as many freight cars. New Conductors to CN, BNSF and the like, the vets get the modern engines, the newbies get the steam engines +D wouldnt that be a sight.
