The program is a "tour" of the four quarters of the Old City - the Jewish, Arab, Christian, and Armenian Quarters - during the period 1200-1650. "Santa Maria, Strela do Dia" is the finale of the "Christian Quarter" section of the program. This piece evokes a medieval street parade in honor of Saint Mary.

Las Cantigas de Santa María fueron compuestas en la corte del rey de Castilla Alfonso X el Sabio, quien además fue autor de muchas de ellas. Están en galaico-portugués, que era la lengua culta de la lírica castellana de aquel tiempo.

Tive a oportunidade de ouvir o Grupo de Música Antiga da UFF em um evento acadêmico realizado na UNIVERSO - São Gonçalo e posso te dizer: É INCRIVEL! Não havia uma só pessoa que ficasse sentada quieta, todos estavam dançando, cantando, batendo palmas de acordo com o que era ensinado pelos cantores e instrumentistas, fazendo da plateia parte da apresentação. One of my favorite moments is at 0:32 when the conductor cues in the whole choir and you can just see the smile on her face. Having a director like that, who gets real and true joy out of their music is one of the best things in any kind of performance, and that joy really translates into the music itself, just absolutely outstanding

In the beggining, Portugal, the County of Porto (Portus-Cale, Cale is Gaia) was a County of the Kingdom of Galicia (sometines independent and other a part of the Kingdom of Leon) were and is the laguage is the Galician. When Portugal splited and became a kingdom Galician from Portugal became a little different, another language or a dialect of Galician. Galaic-Potuguese is not correct. Compuso las cantigas de Santa María en gallego, el idioma de Galicia y de Portugal, por considerarlo el más adecuado para la poesía. Su nieto, D. Dinís de Portugal, seguiría sus pasos.

En España se escribieron canciones el gallego, castellano, catalán, lemosín u provenzal, latín, y en su medida, por el mix cultural, en sefardí (castellano hebreo). Lenguas no nos faltaban. En cuanto al mozárabe o árabe puro, tendría que mirar, pero seguramente también nos quede producción musical en esas dos lenguas. Joder, si estábamos servidos.

@@joanofarcxxi false. Is galaico-portugues, the language prior to portuguese and Gallego, which are spoken in Spain and Portugal. The Cantigas are the result of the King Alfonso X 'El Sabio' , king of Castilla, support and collaboration, who wrote some of them. Back then gallego was considered nicer for poetry, even when Castellano (spanish) was used for everything else. Castilla back then included Galicia. Gallego is a romanic language not a celtic one. Before romanization a big part of Spain had a celtic background, not just in Galicia...

He isn't exactly king of Spain, But King of Castile and Leon, the first to achieve the definitive union of the kingdoms of Castile and Leon, split both kingdoms several times from IX century. From 1296 to 1301 there was a brief separation from León. It was not until 1520, under Charles I, that Aragon, Navarre, Castile and Aragon had a single sovereign of the Españas.

a pronuncia é boa, mas dela tem algumas falhas: ela pronuncia o z como "dz". Algumas palavras foram pronunciadas erradas, por exemplo, ela pronunciou goy com g forte, e na verdade essa palavra se pronuncia "jóy" ou "djóy"

Os trovadores cantavam em galaico .....Já agora, quando visito a Galiza, ao notarem que sou Português, falam, sem eu nada pedir , a lingua portuguesa, provavelmente a mais bela do Mundo.....Obrigado.

Menuda bobada. Es una Cantiga de Alfonso X, rey de Castilla quien, para la lírica, usaba el galleno. Nada de "galaico-portugués". Eso es una bobada pseudopolítica reciente, tan tonta como lo de llamar "confederación catalano-aragonesa" a lo que siempre fue la Corona de Aragón.

For those of us that studied this in Portuguese Literature Classes during their high-school... At a time like this, can be a powerful emotional experience. I was lucky enough to have a teacher that knew her stuff, and communicated it well. To hear people from anglo saxon cultural background bringing alive such vibrant pieces of latin medieval culture, is humbling.

@@f1master973 Galicia is in Spain, and has always been in Spain. Anything Galician is, by default, Spanish. And the author was Castillian, so technically, if anything, it would be a Catilian song in galaico-portuguese language (it's not galician either).

Nessa época, a língua falada no noroeste da Península Ibérica deve ser chamada de galego-português! Comprovadamente, as línguas europeias faladas nas Américas estão muito mais próximas de seus primórdios que suas contrapartidas europeias. Assim, faz muito sentido cantar as Cantigas de Santa Maria com sotaque brasileiro atual. É o que meu grupo musical faz. Lembremos que Afonso X preferiu o galego-português por ser mais doce que o castelhano.

As cantigas foram escritas num estágio inicial das duas línguas, chamado galego-português. Veja-se que a linguagem das cantigas não correspondem exatamente nem ao português nem ao galego de hoje.
