You are absolutely correct the guitar is the vocals. Carlos Santana wrote this song, one of his first and he was so proud of it when he heard it on the radio. You have to see this song performed live it is a masterpiece Live from the House of Blues in Vegas.

I have always loved this track. The entire Abraxas album is a masterpiece. If you're in the mood for more Latin guitar instrumentals, check out Rodrigo y Gabriela. They're a Mexican acoustic guitar duo that has that Latin jazz feel, along with a heavy dose of rock and metal influence. They even do some Metallica covers.

i was in 7th grade in 97. i played the trumpet at the time. my older brother was starting to learn the guitar and getting into jimi hendrix. i still didnt understsnd jimi. but i had the santana greatest hits cd and this song stood out to me. i obsessed over it. i listened to it hundreds of times. i had a boom box that i could program to play certain tracks as i fell asleep. i think this song really got me through 7th and 8th grade. i fell asleep to it every night. i later quit the trumpet and got into jimi. but this was the first guitar song that made a huge impact on my life.

Santana is the best soloist of all time, specially if you consider the emotional , lyrical aspect of playing, the thing is most people have not heard quite a bit of his best soloing , they go with the commercially successful songs , listen to some of his what are considered solo albums , although a lot of his band members play in them ,such as silver dreams golden realities , this album is incredible, I recommend “song for devadip “ which was written by his guru at the time, just incredible, as is the whole album ,another suggestion is the swing of delight in which he pairs with great jazz players , some insane playing in that one also. Even some newer stuff such as the song primavera which is so emotional.

This is the FIRST Santana instrumental, of what would be numerous others over his long and storied career. This is off the groups second album Abraxas, which was released a year after (1970) their seminal Woodstock appearance (1969). Also, as you both so knowledgeably noted, from just your limited exposure to his work, his guitar, like most great guitarists, is very identifiable. Getting back to this classic instrumental, back in '81, with access to virtually every released album by Carlos and the band, and the few he did without them, I put together a cassette, (yes a cassette- that's how you made your favorite compilations back then) of just his best instrumentals, which needless to say, whenever I played it for someone, or at a gathering, they all wanted a duplicate. great stuff, glad you appreciate this piece.

"Hidden gems," huh? Here's one for you. It's called "Flame Sky" from the Welcome album. Carlos Santana is playing with John McLaughlin, a very famous jazz and fusion guitarist. McLaughlin is one the fastest and best guitarists I've ever seen. Santana more than holds his own. The entire song is soaring and electric. It's also over 11:00 long, so it may not be your cup of tea. However, you may also like "Song of the Wind" from the Caravanserai album. It's probably the song that reminds me the most of my father (whose favorite group was Santana). It's 6:00 of just fantastic!

Well hey now, “Esperando” is worth it just for the bass line alone. They perform it in “Sacred Fire: Live In Mexico”. The particular incarnation of the band in this era of the phenomenon of Santana in “Sacred Fire” is at the pinnacle of well-known talent and soulfulness, at least to me. I used to wear my bandanas just like he wore those hats he wore at the time; I used to roll the brim over the “hat part” of the bandana to make it look like his special cap that he wore while playing live on stage - and besides, the Sony Discman Sports in-ear-with-the -fold-up-band headphones had way more bass when I wore that bandana-cap over the headphones. “Esperando” is a kind of departure from most Santana music: it’s a rock & roll reggae beat with Chester Thompson’s world music, to totally 90s sounding soulful keyboards. There are many singers in that song - singers who don’t sing as often singing lead. It’s perfect for what you’re asking for by Santana: it’s different than their other stuff - check it out!
