It's incredible how much Santiago has changed, before there wasn't that amount of illegal trade or that much garbage in the streets or not that way, but even so I would say it's safe. I recently went to downtown Santiago and it has its charm. PD: add sub-in spanish

Pisco is not “a whiskey version of grappa”. Whatever that means? It is made from grapes, fermented then distilled making it a “brandy”. Grappa is made from reconstituted grape must.

I will be in Santiago in a few weeks for my first visit to Chile. The quality of the food is important to me wherever I travel. What I gathered from this video is, in Santiago, I will find delicious Peruvian cuisine made with Chilean ingredients, which sounds like a winner to me. I am definitely looking forward to Chilean fish 'n' chips.

If you want to taste real tradition food, santiago isn't the place, Santiago right now is full of foreigner selling their food , but if you go either south or north you'll find out excellent Chilean food. South MEET, BBQ, BEERS. North WINE, SEA FOOD, FRUITS, and so on..

It's always been dangerous like that, not scary crimes but small robbery. Literally always. It's one of the things we export outside, there was even a sign in the UK that warned about chileans stealing ppl

Chile is very safe. It has the second lowest homicide rate in the whole Americas (only under Canada). The thing is that there is a lot of petty crime, but the chances of you getting kidnapped or murdered are VERY low. Santiago has changed a lot, once it was a very clean and well organized city. Now it look a lot dirtier and less developed, sadly.
@bluequeen8022

Curious of what you consider developed cause let me tell you NYC and London are 100 times dirtier than Santiago, any big city you've heard of looks way worse than Santiago Centro

I'm a chilean living in the US since 1996 and I went back to visit in 2007 and Chile has definitely changed for the worse since then for what I've seen in the news and for what I seen in this video, I'm sure that the immigration that has been happening these few years has something to do with it, it is sad to know that the government doesn't do anything to get it under control, I'm planning on going on December and it kind of scares me to get jumped when walking on the street. Try to go outside Santiago maybe to Valparaiso or Viña del mar, it might be safer.

Mercado Central is one of the most expensive places to eat typical food, they sort of prey on foreigners, for a not so fancy or clean place they should have lower prices.
@harveythompson6951

We were there in 2016. The aggressiveness of the restaurant workers in the mercado trying to get you to eat at their place was a real turn off. Also there were no bargains to be had there for sure. a real tourist trap.

Chile disappeared when the poor and ignorant world of the Caribbean arrived some years ago. Chile was the best, today it has the same problems of Colombia and Venezuela. They destroyed the good things that the Chileans created.

Chile is not a 3rd world country, so things will definitely be a “little more expensive” - but no different in price than the US. The President in office now, will absolutely not fix the economy or the quality of life …. I’m not going to chastise, because you and many as foreigners visiting the country wouldn’t know any better. We were never EVER similar to a Mexico. I’m so happy that you got to visit the wonderful country of Chile, but please don’t talk about politics or compare to other countries if you’ve never lived there or other countries. A “turistas” words can be very damaging, but they can also be very helpful if you know what topics to avoid … especially if you’re just visiting.
