Another brilliant video. Love the additional walk around and inside shots - adds some extra context which is really appreciated. By the way, thanks to Eurowings for continuing to allow you to do these fabulous videos. What an insight. Good forward thinking and advertising for them. So many airlines have issues with showing content like this - which is so backward! It makes me want to fly Eurowings, and I would choose them above those 'backward' airlines any day of the week when I travel. It's good for those a little nervous about flying too - inspires confidence. Looking forward to the next one. Thanks again.

Now my week is complete! Thanks Captain, as always! Beautiful approach and a job well done by your F/O! I love watching you be pilot flying, but I must say I think I enjoy these moments where you monitor a tiny bit more, like in this video. I do get the feeling, that you're the teacher in this cockpit, and I loved it when you got a little excited for the great approach and landing of your F/O :D If I could have had you as a teacher in any subject back in school, my grades would've looked a little better ;) Anyways, thank you again Sir and have a great weekend!

Thanks for watching and your very good and detailed feedback! This approach was special because it was a very short visual approach with additional guidance from the flight directors. As it is all happening very fast, the pilot monitoring has to make sure that the setup for the approach and the guidance is right and inform the pilot flying in accordance. The pilot flying has to use the outside views as main reference with support from the flight director.

Thank you so much for the good and helpful feedback! You do not need to be afraid of flying and there is no need to avoid airports without an ILS. A VOR or RNAV approach is also a safe maneuver. We are trained to do that and have no problems flying it. Especially in Greece, Spain, Italy .... we also fly visual approaches if weather and traffic permits it.

RNAV approaches are actually more precise than ILS, nevertheless, in clear weather they add very little safety.

Great video as usual Captain. I notice that there is no VOR 15 circling 33 procedure in Jeppesen charts. Why this?
@ApproachandDepartureVideos
@ApproachandDepartureVideos 10 ай бұрын
Thanks for the good feedback! The charts are from Lido (Lufthansa Systems). The VOR 15 circling 33 is a CFO approach which was designed by Lido on request of the airline. It contains the standard VOR 15 approach combined with a circling maneuver to runway 33. This can be flown down to the runway like any standard RNP approach.
@eddf4789
@eddf4789 10 ай бұрын
Great flight crew and as always a very nice video to watch. As I checked my chartsystem however I wasn‘t able to find the visual chart to rwy15. I believe this is some kind of LIDO-thing that you’re being provided with a visual approach chart? Technically it pretty much reflects the standard visual circling pattern published for example by airbus? Following the FCOM however it states that a visual approach should be flown with bird on and FD/AP off. Wouldn’t this then be more similar to flying an RNAV approach, regarding flight path given by the FMC and the FINAL APP mode?
@ApproachandDepartureVideos
@ApproachandDepartureVideos 10 ай бұрын
All the used charts are shown at the end of the video. Lido produces also charts and FMS data sets for customers on their request. We were cleared for a visual approach and used as additional guidance the final part of the FMS overlay approach. On the navigation display, you see that we selected the RNAV 33-C. The FMS overlay approach has to be flown like an RNAV approach with flightdirectors on and with autopilot off or on. For landing, the autopilot has to be switched off. The FCOM procedures for a visual approach without any guidance are - for sure - different.
@Stull3
@Stull3 11 ай бұрын
Vielen Dank.
@ApproachandDepartureVideos
@ApproachandDepartureVideos 11 ай бұрын

Thanks for the good feedback! I agree: He did a perfect landing! After leaving 80 feet on the radar altimeter, you can see on the FMA that the approach mode was cancelled automatically and the FMA shows now Vertical Speed and Heading. The mode change is white boxed in the FMA display. In addition, the triple click alerts the pilots about the change.

Very nice approach and smooth landing! I wanted to ask you, how often do you fly to an airport where the wingspan of A319 matters when taxing?
@ApproachandDepartureVideos
@ApproachandDepartureVideos 11 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching and your question! With the A320 family, our wingspan is less than 36 meters. All the airports we fly to can accommodate that. But some of the smaller airports have also taxiways and areas which we cannot use because of our wingspan. Sometimes we have to do a backtrack on the runway instead of using a too tiny taxiway.

Mal wieder tolles Video, vielen Dank fürs teilen!
@ApproachandDepartureVideos
@ApproachandDepartureVideos 11 ай бұрын

@ApproachandDepartureVideos
@ApproachandDepartureVideos 11 ай бұрын

Beautiful approach and he did a great landing! I noticed the seats at the exit row say "more legroom" but not "you must be willing and able to open the exit door to sit here". 🤔 I was wondering.. with those side sticks, is the FM's input disabled so you don't bump it the wrong way by accident while pushing the button to talk on the radio?
@ApproachandDepartureVideos
@ApproachandDepartureVideos 11 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching and your good feedback! I agree, the First Officer did a great landing! There are also seats with more legroom and no emergency exit. You are right, if you are seated at the emergency exit, you must be willing and able to open the exit. The flight attendants would tell you about it and give you instructions. If somebody does not want to sit there, he or she will get another seat. The sidestick inputs are added. If one pilot steers to the right and the other to the left, the plane will fly straight ahead. No, we won't do any stick input accidently when using the push to talk button at the sidestick.
@crypto1701
@crypto1701 11 ай бұрын
@@ApproachandDepartureVideos Wow.. great answer! As far as the sidesticks, you said the plane will fly straight if it gets conflicting inputs.. what if you're landing? I'm wondering.. if one of you passed out and accidentally kept pushing on the stick, how do you handle that situation if you're PM? A switch to shut off their input? I'm assuming they don't move in unison like a yoke does.
@ApproachandDepartureVideos
@ApproachandDepartureVideos 11 ай бұрын
Good question! The general rule is that only one pilot makes the inputs. If both would make an input, they would be added to each other. If one pilot is incapacitated, the other pilot can take over the controls with a so called "takeover pushbutton". If one pilot pushes this pushbutton, it deactivates the sidestick of the other pilot.

Great video Stefan! I think once you were on the ground, the ATC audio was fuzzy. I had to turn my volume down! Is this an instance where the line could be blocked if you can’t understand correctly? My next question is: when your FO asked the ground frequency to repeat the stand number I think it was, how often can this be repeated? For example, if the line is still blocked or you can’t understand sometimes. I was plane spotting at Gatwick about 2 and half weeks ago and I saw 2 planes do an aborted landing because there was a plane on the runway that didn’t leave the runway quickly I think. At Gatwick they have 2 runways but only use 1, but if 1 is out of use due to maintenance or emergencies I think, they can use the other runway. Final question: How often can this happen at any airport and is it quite scary for some? I’ve never experienced it.
@ApproachandDepartureVideos
@ApproachandDepartureVideos 11 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching and the good feedback! Sometimes it is difficult to understand ATC. The cause must not be the ATC controller. It also could be a problem with a radio in the airplane or the transmitter of the ATC facility. Or that we were listening to another frequency in parallel. If we do not understand or do not get the full message, we always ask. Most of the time, one "say again" call is enough to understand everything. But in general, we have to ask as often as needed to understand the message. I also heard pilots saying something like "please say again slowly" ... Dusseldorf in Germany also has two runways. Due to political reasons, they are only allowed to use both runways for a fixed amount of hours every week. At other times, only one runway is available. This produces sometimes unneeded delays on the ground and in the air (additional flight time due to the traffic). In case of emergencies, maintenance or other issues, the secondary runway may be used as backup for the main runway.

@@ApproachandDepartureVideos That's really interesting. The same happened to me when I was also at Southampton Airport about a month ago. Question. Why you always leave the engines running for one minute after parking? Does it have to do with static electricity and ground or something else?
@ApproachandDepartureVideos
@ApproachandDepartureVideos 11 ай бұрын
Good question. The engines are in need of a 3 minute cooldown time. Without the 3 minutes the engines are cooled down too fast. This "shock cooling" would reduce the lifetime of the engines. You can compare it to some turbochargers in cars which also need some cooldown time. If the taxi time to the gate or parking position is very short, we keep the engines running at the gate until the 3 minutes are elapsed.

Ground staff seemed to approach even though engines were running (for cool-down)?
@ApproachandDepartureVideos
@ApproachandDepartureVideos 11 ай бұрын
No, it looks to me that they did not get too close to the airplane when the engines were running. They did not cross the red/white painted lines which are visible on the apron floor. I assume that this is the "official" boundary for them and shows where they are allowed to be when the engines are running. In addition, the ground crew has a map which shows exactly how close they may approach the airplane at which position. The chocks were placed into position after I switched the engines and the rotating beacon off.

Thanks for watching! The full approach to runway 33 (which we were originally cleared for) would have been much longer. Please check out the charts. I assume that we saved about 15 miles of flight distance with the visual approach clearance. The RNAV part we used to aid the visual approach was from the approach to runway 15, circle to land to runway 33. We are flying a lot with autopilot off and flight directors on. Most of the visual approaches are flown without flight directors or autopilot. Santorini is one of very few airports which have even a guidance available for a short visual approach at the end of an RNAV approach. It is our decision to use it or not. Here we used it and the guidance was really good.

We first set 1200 because the final approach part of our selected approach is coded out of 1200 feet. But due to the fact that we were cleared for a visual approach, we set that to 1500 feet in anticipation of a possible straight downwind segment. As we were approaching 1500 feet, there was no need for a much longer straight downwind segment. So we set it back to 1200 feet and started the final descent shortly afterwards. We discussed all that in a very detailed briefing which is not part of the video.

The altitude tape turns amber as soon as the Airbus descents below the entered MDA (see approach chart). As stated here by another viewer, this is the altitude at which the runway has to be in sight during an instrument approach. If not, the approach needs to be discontinued. We were flying a visual approach. During the visual approach, the runway is always in sight. At 07:03 the approach was done and the flight management and guidance system switched modes.
