Sawani has expertise in Ancient Indian Temple Architecture and iconography.
Sawani is passionate about India, the land and her people and is keen on writing the story right with due importance to India’s civilisational ethos and narratives. To help change Goa’s image as limited to beaches and booze and reveal its true story to natives as well as tourists, Sawani made use of her academic background and launched heritage tours to explore the real Goa through its temples, archaeological remains, local cultural experiences such as festivals and folk performance

As a Konkani Saraswat Brahman whose ancestors fled from Goa because of the Portuguese persecution, I almost cried watching Sawani ji speak. The situation was very similar to what Kashmiri Hindus faced but here the colonizers were Christian zealots. I am a proud Hindu not because of my achievements or some false sense of superiority but because of the great sacrifices of my Hindu ancestors. They held on to their faith, their gods, and their Dharma even in such dire situations. I can only imagine the kind of courage and commitment that they carried in their hearts to be able to let go of everything but not their Dharma.

I’m a Goan Brahmin. My kuldevi is Vijayadurga in Keri. My ancestors fled Goa and went to Karnataka. Even our kuldevi was moved twice from her original location. The current location of the temple is on the hill top and it’s quite secluded! The story goes that the priests hid the idol and carried her on the mountain to prevent Portuguese from vandalizing the idol.

Unfortunately Indians really had a hard time from the Muslims and the Christian’s as their primary aim was to convert them. But the mystery is after all the conversions that have taken place we are still Hindus and going strong. Just imagine how much of physical violence and torture must have been undergone by each of them to stay as Hindus. Never forget our forefathers who sacrificed everything than changing their religion and we should never forget this!

Everyone should read the following: -Denaming of Goa by Bernardo Elvino DeSousa -Castes of Mind: Colonialism and making of modern India by Dirk -will sweetman's publication on 'The Dravidian Idea in Missionary Accounts of South Indian Religion' -and to understand how missionaries were involved in slave trading of so called lower caste you can read publication from portugese scholar 'Manumission of Slaves in Goa During 1682 to 1760 as Found in Codex 860' by Teotonio R. Desouza. Reminder india wasn't the only land where this has happened. Every non-white and non-christian ruler land which was colonized or inquisitioned faced the same. Native american tribe, Native Canadian tribes, central and south africa, aboriginals of australia, latin america. It wasn't until the treaty of yandabo (1826) that the christian missionaries didn't start the conversion in what they termed 'North-East India'. Read about heraka movement, seng khasi movement etc. Its only because of two Abhramanical faiths that this land has endured so much.

That sawani Shetye is a big liar put forward by that termite organization called rss to spread false history of goa an spread hate. She is a maharashtrian not a goan from the bordering district of maharashtra who's ancestors entered goa during Portuguese rule. An now claiming to be a goan. You ask her only one question that is if she is a goan then she a gaunkar of which village of goa. Because before Portuguese rule started there were only gaunkars staying in goa.

I am partly Goan as my Mom is from Goa. They are Hindus too. I always used to think that the Goa which I experience or see is completely different from what people describe it to be. Goa is not only about beaches and clubs but it has a rich cultural heritage. I think it’s high time that all the names of places in Goa be changed to it’s original name. People promoting Portuguese culture as something exotic must be stopped. As a lot of localites have suffered due to this inquisition. Also, our school names must not be kept on the name of these so called Saints because they were really not Saints. Killing innocent people for selfish reasons is not a kind of behavior any Saint would have.

If I may add , Sati was not dominant any time in India. Take Kunti of Mahabharata fame. If Sati was prevalent , even she should have been pushed to Sati Sati was an option which allowed the wife to enter Sati ONLY AND ONLY if her family responsibilities were over , and then too she had to go to the guru who would say yes or no. ( A very important saint [Shri Vasaraja teertha] in our Kannada tradition was born only when the guru said NO to the wife and the guru was powerful enough to bring the dead husband back to life). Sati would be brought into a forceful practice only to prevent the widows from being sold to prostitution. Hence , evidences of Sati are more dominant in North India in comparison to South India due to rampant attacks there

Agree but madri committed sati didn't she?but I agree it was the choice of the woman and her family and not a compulsion... Another example is Mata Ahilyabai holkar.. Sati pratha never prevailed in India before the cruel invaders who captured all kanya Gurukuls and village ladies were abducted forcibly and gang raped as Maleganimat or spoils of war. Sold these ladies in Meena Bazaars for prostitution work. All red light areas were created by Mughals and Christians. All badwords had come from Abrahamic religions. There is no respect for women and are considered as soul less property or material objects that can be sold in market. This practices still goes on secretly in Democracy and openly in Muslim countries. Afganistan videos are available to see live video of selling girls in Burkhas in the market.

As a young child i always wondered how a very harmonious community with a distinct vedic culture, speaking Konkani language came to be amidst the heartlands of Kerala that too in a town like Kayamkulam .It was only when i grew up that i learnt the of the unfathomable struggles they had gone through and how they sought safety along with their deities to the Odanad Kingdom where the King gave them an existing Temple of his own to accommodate the deities including the existing Sri Vittoba Temple administered by the Gaud Saraswat Brahmins. Pranam to all the Goan fraternity who had to endure such pain. The need of the hour at the very least is a Truth and Reconciliation initiative to ensure that wounds are eased ( if not healed ) and the stories included and taught in the National Academic History syllabus . For even if one forgives, it must not be forgotten. 🙏

I have had a very bitter experience in Goa, I'm from Maharashtra. Lived in Goa for almost 9 years. I knew little Konkani but still, I was treated like an outsider. The converted Christians are not coming back.

I too have similar experience during my limited stay in Goa, most Goans (irrespective of religion) look down upon outsiders specially those from coming from MH. Many had opinion that they would rather live in Goa under Portuguese rule than what it is today. I could understand that they were frustrated due to Goa being run down by the overflow of tourists and those trying to make living on it by exploiting the natural habitat then there is corruption everywhere just like any other part of the country, no home grown industry other than hospitality so most locals have this typical cliche image of the people from specific state or city.

This is a rather strange assumption that you thought of Goa as a "Western concept" and that you are being able to ascribe Sanatana Dharma to it only after the advent of social media. It is the most nonsensical admission that I have heard in recent times. Either your history teachers must have been horrendously ignorant or the choice of books that you must have been reading must have been really poor. How can Goa which is a part of India have a "Western concept"? And your admission that you needed social media to tell you otherwise makes it all the more laughable.

@@kiranbahety8438goa was actually a Buddhist state for almost 2000yrs it was the frist religion which came to goa an the native goan accepted it. since in the beginning natives never had any religion. The next religion to enter goa was jainism in was in practice for almost a 1000yrs. Then in 52AD Christianity came to goa before it reached Europe or America although it had very few followers at that time. Then in around 1198 there was a genocide in goa whereby most of the Buddhist an jains were either killed or forced to abandon their faith an some took shelter in the neighboring kingdoms, Christianity was saved from this genocide because they never had any places of worship because the concept of church was not there at that time. An that's how present day Hinduism came to goa. Most of the temples which are before 13th century are actually either Buddhist or jains places of worship which were converted into temples.
