Do yourself a favor and buy this album! This is one of her best albums, right up there with FTE and Surfacing! Turn the Lights Down Low is amazing and sounds like it would fit right in on FTE, while the more upbeat songs like In Your Shoes and Love Beside Me would fit in on Laws of Illusion or Afterglow! This album is a perfect compromise between ballads and upbeat songs!

OMG I have been waiting for another album from Sarah for a loooooong time. Her music has been with me and gotten me through some hard times. Thank you Sarah. One of the few perfomers whose music is actually as good (if not better) live than off the album.

I haven't gotten the album yet (it should be here in a few days, hopefully), but I can't wait to hear it. If "in your shoes" and "beautiful girl" are any indications of how awesome the album is, I'm going to have a heck of a time choosing a favorite, so I'll just say the album as a whole is my favorite. lol You never seem to disappoint. I can't wait to see you in concert this summer.

It seems like Sarah that you have a signature song in each phase of our relationship, well we are in our 60's now and have been married for the better part of 40 years, so all i can say is keep it up, no one has your range of tone or emotion.

I was surprised to hear that you had an opportunity to work with Fear Factory on the album Obsolete. That album was fairly deep with themes of resisting oppression, the out-of-control proliferation of weapons, domestic surveillance, and it drew some very interesting inspiration from a Twilight Zone episode called ‘The Obsolete Man’, where the main character was facing a kangaroo court due to being deemed obsolete and was sentenced to death. It’s an album about an Orwellian nightmare, and our very own humanity standing in defiance. I can sort of understand your aversion to working on the album. There’s a lot of stigma directed at that genre but I’d really suggest that you take a moment to listen to Alex Skolnick’s seminar at Alto University. He’s a smart dude. Both of his parents received PhDs from Yale. He addresses the various misconceptions fairly well. There’s some things he doesn’t cover though. Things I think are important, like looking at the genre’s origins. Looking at the origins you can begin to understand the music better. It’s very much blue collar. It does however look at the ivory towers of music and pull from it. One of the most metal non-metal songs that really kicked it off was ‘Mars, Bringer of War’ by Gustav Holst, and that song is just a pure genius work that makes your hairs stand up. Beethoven, Wagner, Bach, they all seem to pale when Mars plays. How did it get into metal? Geezer Butler from Black Sabbath is one definite place. He admits to playing along to it, and drawing from it. What sort of musical elements does Mars hold? Well, it’s in G minor, and many musicians seem to be perplexed trying to find its key. Metal does that. It shifts key rapidly, it’s in minor, it’s even atonal sometimes. Mars is in an odd time signature, 5/4. Metal does this as well. Time often changes, even. Tempo changes. With some tunes, even the snazzy jazz drummers sit there struggling to find 1. Mars contains use of ostinato. Metal does that. It’s an intensely rhythmic genre. Rhythm pushed to the max. It’s meant to be jarring, confusing, disturbing, in your face and powerful, just like Mars was intended to be. Mars is metal’s blueprint. Metal is stürm und drang of the modern day. It is apex Dionysian, orderly Dionysian intensity. In many ways it is like jazz. Blue collar roots, looking at the ivory towers, and forming its own identity in music. I think you missed a great opportunity to work with a pretty good metal band. When I think of outsiders performing on metal tracks or with metal artists, I think about Lisa Miskovsky, Sean Lennon (yes, THE Sean Lennon, son of John), Ché Aimee, Lita Ford, and so on. They weren’t afraid or snobbish. I forgot Gary Newman. Hahaha. On the very album you rejected. Also, that Sean Lennon song is just intense and so sad to listen to. Both he and the band’s frontman lost their fathers at a very young age and that’s what the song is about. Mourning that loss and metal is a great genre for that sort of emotion. Pain isn’t pretty, and neither is metal. It really is a beloved genre internationally. Even here on KZfaq you can see that. There’s a little Malaysian Muslim girl who plays guitar, there’s a Korean woman playing metal drums while in high heels, there’s an award-winning Ukrainian pianist who plays metal piano renditions, and you should just hear the crowd roar with excitement in Japan when SOD began playing one of Slayer’s hit songs mid-song. Even in off-flung places like Vietnam there’s crossover thrash bands that write songs about the funniest everyday life things like a date’s indecisiveness on what to eat. It’s in Brazil, Chile, Sweden, Canada, Russia, Mongolia, Germany, France, Scotland, all over the world. It is funny when I think about some of it. You could have a nice Chardonnay while enjoying many of the elements of metal performed by an orchestra up in the hoity toity high-rise seats. Even when I look at lyrical themes, there’s similarities to the posh class. Just look at ‘The Faerie Queene’. It is considered fine literature in the academic circles. In all reality, it sounds like a death metal song at parts of it. There’s one more misconception I’d like to lay to rest (Lamb of God metal pun intended). People think these artists cannot sing, so they play metal. That’s nonsense. Corey Taylor, Randy Blythe, James Hetfield, Phil Anselmo, Devin Townsend, Burton C Bell, and so on. They can all sing well, even exceptionally well in fact. Just look at Devin Townsend. His vocal range is over 5 octaves, with the ability to provide beautiful falsetto and vibrato. Just check out the song ‘Kingdom’. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pNuSfc1znpu6lI0.html 49,000 likes and no coincidence.

@lisa-marieirving9343
