With Sarah passing her mock driving test last week ( • Practical Driving Test... ) she was feeling confident about today, but still with the normal driving test day nerves.
Watch footage to see how she got on, I have edited to video to speed up the less interesting bits and also do a narration as recording audio of the UK driving test is not allowed, nor are you allowed to film inside the car.

Driving Crawley I think I deal with meet situations quite well, you have to do this a lot! My main problem is some of the narrow roads and the speed limit (same mistakes, too slow or too fast!) and confidence in dual carriageway merges. Most of my issues stem from confidence really! Only good thing I have on my side is working for the Council and knowing when and where road works show up!! I’ll look at the giveaway now Thankyou! Congrats on another pass 😄

I thought candidates do not get failed for hesitation but for undue hesitation. There is a distinct difference crucially whether it was undue. I would not pull out of a small country road onto a fast country road without stopping as cars could be travelling legally at 60mph and much faster if they are disregarding the speed limit unless the zone of vision was extremely good. You need to see a long way down the road and assess their speed too. It is quicker overall in my opinion to come up and stop from a reasonable speed stop, observe and go, rather than try to creep up to the give way line without stopping then slowly emerge on the move.Sat Nav instructions can be confirmed on these country type roads easily by looking at the unit in short bursts, if you can maintain safe steering on approach, to try and get a better picture of the road layout.
@UKDrivingTest
@UKDrivingTest 5 жыл бұрын
Yes this is true. As you say there are higher risk when merging onto a country road, so taking a more 'hesitant' approach is required. If however you are at a roundabout and your vision is good and you slow down to 2mph then this would be undue, and would be marked as undue hesitation. No faults on this test were given for hesitation at t-junctions onto fast moving roads, the faults were for roundabouts with good visibility.

I find the practice of reducing speed when approaching traffic lights a bit odd. Yes they could change, but that's what the amber phase is for, if you can't stop safely, proceed. Perhaps this is different in The Netherlands compared to the UK, over here the duration of the amber phase is relative to the speed limit. A traffic light on a 20 mph road will have a much shorter amber phase compared to a traffic light on a 50 mph road. So in most circumstances it's perfectly safe and acceptable to approach a Dutch traffic light doing the speed limit.
@UKDrivingTest
@UKDrivingTest 5 жыл бұрын
I suppose there are a few things i would say to that: 1. The student is not braking approach the light, but easing off the gas and potentially covering brake on high speed roads (over 30mph). Just to confirm. Braking could be excessive and could slow too much, like slowing to 30mph on a 50mph road is excessive, you are kind of hoping for the light to change to green. 2. Like with any hazard when driving if you are anticipating something might happen, like someone might pull out in front of you, the sensible thing to do is ease off the gas and / or cover brake, this increase (or is it reduces???) your reaction time, meaning you can stop quicker if the hazard develops. Doing this could save you from an accident. 3. The students are new drivers, so can easily panic and get in a muddle if they are not prepared, students slamming the brakes on and saying, "the light suddenly changed" is quite common. Look at the footage here (first clip) kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ms6eo8p93r3MlZs.html Would be interested to know what you would have done here? 4. The amber does stay on for different lengths of time depending on the speed of the road, but not sure if the time it is on is different to the Netherlands. Having watched the video on the previous point you will be able to tell if it stays amber for a different period of time.
@MicraHakkinen
@MicraHakkinen 5 жыл бұрын
@@UKDrivingTest 1. Noted, no disagreement there. 2. That is very true as well. A traffic light is one of the best indicators that you're approaching a potentially hazardous situation, even when the light is green. Emphasis on the 'potentially' though, because if you have a clear view of the junction, there's no conflicting traffic waiting or approaching and no traffic following you closely, then there isn't a reason to slow down in my opinion. I suppose that perhaps I took the advice of 'reducing speed when approaching lights' a bit too literally, as if it always applied regardless of circumstances. 3. Looking at the clip you linked, I would estimate that had they continued at the speed limit, they would have passed the stopping line on amber, but only just. Alternatively they could have perhaps started braking earlier and / or braked slightly harder (following traffic permitting). But I have to agree that both those outcomes are less than ideal and leave little room for error either on the student's or other driver's part. Taking into account that they're a learner and therefore a lot of things (like shifting gears) probably still require more time and attention, it makes perfect sense to get off the throttle a bit and give yourself that extra time. On that subject, knowing your and the car's limits as a driver is one thing, having the discipline to stay well within those limits is another. Having driven without any accidents for many years now I must admit to having developed a certain amount of complacency and perhaps even a tendency to overestimate my driving skills. Which is one of the reasons I'm watching videos like this and having discussions like this one. It's very hard to have a critical look at my driving habits all on my own ;) 4. There is a surprising amount of information to be found on the duration of the amber phase. The most recent comprehensive data I found is from a 2016 study. On average the amber phases in The Netherlands have the following durations: * 50 km/h (31 mi/h): 3 s * 70 and 80 km/h (43 and 50 mi/h): 4 s The researchers point out that in comparison with other countries, this is relatively short and near the minimum amount of time that is required. They also found that lengthening the amber phase with 0,5 to 1 seconds leads to a reduction in red light violations, but does not lead to a decrease in red light accidents. This is likely due to a subset of drivers simply unwilling to stop for a red light. They also present recommendations for an optimal amber phase duration backed up by tests carried out on several different locations throughout The Netherlands. Their recommendations are based around the following values: * A comfortable deceleration of 2,8 m/s² (for comparison, during an emergency stop with a passenger car in good working order, on a set of good quality tires, with anti-lock brakes and on a dry road you can expect to see roughly 10 m/s², or about 1 G) * A driver response time of 1 s * Assuming drivers can maintain their speed through the lights (for example a sharp bend right before or after traffic lights that forces drivers to slow down to 40 km/h (25 mi/h) or less would allow for safely reducing the duration of the amber phase to 3 s regardless of the speed limit) These are their recommendations for motorized traffic (cars, motorbikes, buses, HGVs, etc): 50 km/h (31 mi/h): 3,5 s 60 km/h (37 mi/h): 4,0 s 70 km/h (43 mi/h): 4,5 s 80 km/h (50 mi/h): 5,0 s In the video you linked the amber phase only lasts around 3 seconds, which in my opinion is ridiculously short considering the speed limit. If that is (close to) the norm in the UK, I can fully understand getting off the throttle for traffic lights. P.S. Apologies for the wall of text, I got a bit carried away ;)
@UKDrivingTest

@@MicraHakkinen thank you for your details reply. As well as the amber lights having short phases, as you have researched very well! The vision to the other junctions is often very poor, so it is very rare you will actually know if there are other cars waiting and therefore you never know when the traffic light is going to change. "always expect it to change" Is best advice in the UK.

@@UKDrivingTest I am currently learning to drive later in life (60+). My instructor is frequently has to intervene to say ignore the sat nav directions or to clarify the turn right, turn left, bear right and turn around type instructions it gives. It is perhaps just me but I find it really hard to look at the tiny screen and keep my eye (and steering) on the road at the same time. I therefore rely on the audio direction and it is neither consistent or reliable.
@UKDrivingTest
@UKDrivingTest 3 жыл бұрын
Your other comment seems to have been deleted, but I can still see some of it in my notifications. So you are a 'mature' learners and have been using sat nav where you instructor has been having to tell you to ignore it at times? Is that correct? I would 100% agree that sat nav are not always fully accurate, this is not just the ones they use on test but in general. However this leaves us with a dilemma, the options are: 1. The sat nav system is complete redesigned (for all sat nav makes) to make the instructions more clear, however this would be extremely expensive and result in very expansive sat nav and I would still doubt they can be 'perfect' as driving is often situational and things are NOT black and white, a sat nav is a computer to things need to be black and white for it. So don't really know how they could design a 'perfect' sat nav. 2. Sat nav are banned for EVERYONE, including those post test, people are all told to rely on using a map to get to their destinations. 3. Sat nav is removed from the driving test, which would mean no confusion for learner driver, HOWEVER they will not have any experience at using them for their post test driving, meaning they are are higher risk of getting confused and crashing post test. 4. Stick with how it is at the moment, whilst the sat nav is not perfect at least learner drivers will get a bit of experience and how they work and will, hopefully, learn that they can fully rely on a sat nav, they can only use it is basic guidance, they must use their own observations and planning skills to ensure they understand the directions and driver safely. Personally for me I don't have ANY issues with follow a sat nav, but that is because I know to follow their directions with caution, essentially I only follow the route on the screen, I do not pay too much attention to the verbal commands. I think most people are the same as me when they have had enough experience of using a sat nav. So basically I just think you need more practice using the sat nav.
