In this video, you'll see my UX portfolio and learn how to tell the story behind each of the projects in my UX portfolio.
If you're tired of watching KZfaq videos and reading articles that say "tell the story" but don't teach you HOW to do that ... then you're in the right place!
You'll learn how to show the process and most of all, communicate the CONTEXT of the project so you can go beyond just showing project screenshots. If you are working on your UX portfolio, this will help you see through the eyes of a recruiter and hiring manager so that you can make sure your portfolio stands out.

I think I have a strong skill when it comes to UI and visual design. I’m working for a really small company and my boss doesn’t really care about user. I’m really overwhelmed where to start >.> my portfolios are mostly visual images without any explanation. Would you give me some advice?

Hi Sarah! First of all, thank you sooooo much for the amazing content you produce. It has all been really helpful in preparing my career switch from architecture to UX design. I have a question for you: what is a good length for a PDF case study? I just finished a very well documented case study resulting in something like 35 pages of 1920x1080 format... considering that I also have 2 more case studies on the way... I am concerned that a 80 pages PDF will be a bit too much for a hiring manager to scroll through.... any suggestion about it? thank you in advance!

For a project that is huge, around 9 months, making constant updates on one app, what does that look like? Seems like a lot of portfolio examples show MVP's that aren't tested and go through beginning to end designing an entire app as the project. What if one week I'm tweaking copy, another week I'm redesigning onboarding screens, another week i'm redesigning installer screens, another week i'm redesigning parts of the notifications the user receives, etc? When the app has a lot of moving parts it's hard to put that in one project I feel. I've also done designs for new features of the app. And this is just at my current job where I've also done some front end dev, QA and visual design direction. I've also done art for video games, and UI and front end dev for other projects.
@SarahDoody
@SarahDoody 5 жыл бұрын
Think about how you can break that one project into specific areas of focus. So maybe you have it right now as "Project A" -- but maybe it can break down into "Project A: User Research" and then "Project A: Prototyping & Usability Testing" and then "Project A: Design System" -- make sense?

Hi Sarah, should we still prepare this project presentation if we already have the project case study on our website?
@SarahDoody
@SarahDoody 3 жыл бұрын
Well .... you have to ask yourself, "what will I show in my interview?" Personally, I think it is a better experience to present from an actual Keynote, PPT, or PDF instead of bringing up a website. I just think it's a better experience for the audience.

Just a question. When i upload a project to my portfolio as a UX case study and it has all the information with it and my design process and the recruiter is asking me to review it. What im going to say if i have everything written with the project and they can read. Am i allowed to simply read what i have written with the project?
@SarahDoody
@SarahDoody 4 жыл бұрын
It's very unlikely that they will have read the entire case study before the interview. DO NOT read them your case study. It's a conversation. Imagine you were having coffee with me and telling me about the project ... it would be really awkward if you literally read me the case study!

Storyboard helps to establish the vision for what you're trying to achieve in the very early phases. The user journey shows how the user will interact with the product/service, different touchpoints, and what the user is doing, thinking, feeling etc;

I don't believe there is an exact # of projects to showcase and an exact # of slides per project. It's somewhat subjective and depends on how long it actually feels.
@3drocket

I agree. Feels way too long for one project. Yes it is in depth but no one other than other ux designers are going to read it. People that are doing the hiring don't have the time.
@seanadamson7640
@seanadamson7640 5 жыл бұрын
@@3drocket You could have two portfolios with the same projects. One online website for HR which has a high level overview, and less detailed yet quickly express what you can do. Then a presentation done in keynote which is much more in depth, like the one Sarah presented in this video which would be used during a face to face interview.

Way too much text on your slides. Remember you are going to be talking during the presentation. Are you going to just be repeating what is written on each slide? Every slide doesn’t need text.
