Be careful of what primer you use, the Ospho will probably need to be reapplied to reactivate the layer that is on it now, and then neutralized and rinsed off. Most all epoxy primers will not be compatible with an acid based metal prep unless it’s completely neutralized and removed first. Check with the primer manufacture to see if the Ospho needs to be neautralized/removed, the TDS doesn’t always mention it. Would hate to see prep and primer/paint work ruined by adhesion problems. Upvote this so hopefully Sarah sees it before spraying primer!
@h82crash
@h82crash Жыл бұрын
True. You must be sure about compatibility. I have 2K urethane primer from Eastwood and it says it MUST be acid prepped if applied to bare metal. But I etch and remove before the phos dries.
@theastronaut2276
@theastronaut2276 Жыл бұрын
@@h82crash 2k urethane over bare metal is a bad idea, it doesn’t seal metal like epoxy does and filler does not stick well to 2k so if you need to touch up and bodywork with filler it won’t stick. Eastwood is relabeling lower quality materials, I wouldn’t think trust them on something that matters. Look into SPI products instead, they’re very high quality, priced reasonably, and the costumer service and tech support is the best ever.
@maxfolio940
@maxfolio940 Жыл бұрын
@@theastronaut2276 2k urethane filler primer seems just fine on bare metal, guess it depends on brand. Did most of my car with 2k epoxy on sandblasted metal then body filler and 2k urethane filler tho, just got lazy on last few seperate pieces. I definetly feel like the ospho/rust converter stuff is just asking for trouble and not neccessary, the 2k epoxy will fill, seal and ahdere fine to small rust pores. Kinda like same with sodablasting just way more hassle than sand... But it might have its place on spots that you cant mechanically strip the rust/are too lazy like backside of a steel bumper. I used the eastwood internal frame coating rattlecan on inside of framerails, i guess its okay atleast it had nice extension nozzle on the can but there are better 1k paints too that are more solvent resistant, probably better to stick with ppg etc.

Watching you do this causes recurring nightmares of when my brother, father and I repaired a 1973 VW Bug. The body was horrendously rusted. We live in Ontario so that Bug saw more than its' fair share of salt over the years. We cut, welded, fabricated more of that car than we should have. We finished it off with rattle cans of blue paint which actually didn't look too bad from 10 feet away.

Couple things - Put the "rust mort" ( (c) SEM) in a spray bottle and mist it all over the panel, and wipe it around with a new rag. You could do the whole car in about 10 minutes! Trust me - done it countless times. And don't use glass cleaner to clean it down, use wax and grease remover. The ammonia (and all the other stuff) in almost all glass cleaners can make for an ugly chemical cocktail between it, the acid, the future paint.

I'm wondering if you spent more money on paint stripper than you would have spent on having it media blasted. I say media, because there are a few different types of material being used to blast the paint off. Like baking soda and very fine sand, to coarse sand. I've also seen video of someone using water to blast the paint off of a truck. Also you are so right about rust, rust never sleeps, especially if there's moisture in the air and on the metal.
