I’m Roman Catholic and I love listening to Motley Crüe, Sabbath and Maiden. They’re NOT satanic and never worshipped Satan. They used those symbols to look like a badasses and intimidating “bad boys” who break the rules and to attract attention to a rebellious teen generation that felt repressed by an alt-conservative and close minded society during the Reagan era.

This is hilarious. I was a teen in the 80s .I remember the hoopla over this "satanic" music. I grew up on it. Interesting the big freak out over it went away. As did the PMRC. It did more to help and promote metal bands.

The only bands in 1983 who one could call legitimately satanic were maybe Mercyful Fate and Venom. The others just played up an image to sell records, concert tickets and merchandise, and it worked spectacularly. The people who panicked and fear-mongered over heavy metal were kids once who probably rocked out to the sounds of Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis and Little Richard, and they probably endured the same shit from their parents about "devil music" that they were imposing on kids of the 80's. It's this total generational thing. Parents and authority figures will never understand and/or appreciate the music that's rabidly listened to by the youth, and that holds true of any era. I guarantee you, when today's youth grow up and spawn the next generation, they'll go toe-to-toe over the same shit. Just wait and see.

I remember this era in the early 80's, there were all kinds of church youth groups talking about this, bible thumping groups protesting Ozzy concerts, all the backward masking witch-hunting and the groups names..KISS = Knights In Satans Service, SAGA = Satan Against Gods Authority, AC/DC = After Christ Devil Comes. Ahh, those were the days of innocence. Now days Marilyn Manson carried it farther than most and people still could see through the gimmick.

Pretty funny people always made a big deal about Led Zeppelin - Stairway to Heaven backwards messages. Because I had an expensive component turntable , all that little stunt did was cost him $312:00 . You can't play high quality turntables backwards, it can ruin them . Morbid Angel and Deicide were the two in death metal that had overt blasphemous lyrics and Ezurate in Chicago the lead singer is an Atheist as they have Satanism in the undertones of their lyrics as the members are tongue-in-cheek with the references of corrupting the youth. The King James Only Movement singles out the harmless metal bands. Ozzy is Angelican while Butler and Iommi are Roman Catholic. TV38 at the time was a Christian tV station in Wheaton, Illinois, had a documentary that zeroed in on Metallica for doing Fade to Black as the track refers to suicide in the infamous dirge.
