1958: Satchel Paige was fifty-something when he came to Miami to play for the Marlins in the late 1950s and his age was a perennial point of contention. In this interview with WTVJ's Jack Cummins Paige says, "I think I can play baseball about fifteen or twenty more years."
Other talking points: Pitching in the Miami heat, going back to the big leagues, and what makes a good pitch.

Ol´ Satch would have been 52 YO at that time. His year of birth is generally given as 1906. A true American sport hero, this good man never had a real opportunity to show the world that he was one of the best players born in the USA.

Mr Paige played baseball for my dad on his barnstorming tours. He and My dad were friends for years and had many adventures in baseball and basketball tours. My dad also arranged bookings for Satchel on speakers circuits.

Oh yes. For many many years since the 1930-40s until 1979. My dad started with House of David ball countdown my dad owned numerous Barnstorming baseball and basketball teams, and our families went to games together. My dad also booked LeRoy on speaking engagement tours.One year I have fun memories had 4th of July together at our house. All us kids catching lightening bugs and lightening fireworks. Satchel also travelled with my dad keeping company in his basketball Barnstormers tours . My dad was Dempsey Hovland ( Google him)

@@lloydkline6946 We will never know now will we? It's easy to say that when it was never seen but I put my money on Satch and Josh not to mention if Babe had to face Smokey Joe Williams or Cannonball Dick Redding I bet he wouldn't have had 715 dingers....

I got stachel paige oldie book,,, satchel paige said he never pitch against babe ruth, babe ruth had his all star played against & batted against satchel paige, babe ruth was just the manager, was babe ruth scary/ afraid of satchel paige, ??? laugh laugh, , babe ruth would say anytime & anywhere,, to satchel paige,, fastball satchel paige did pitch against roger hornsby, ,,,charlie gehringer, roger hornsby, charlie gehringer ,, needed batting practice, jimmy foxx& lou gehrig wouldve ❤️/ love. hitting/ batted baseball against satchel paige fastball, & other pitches ,

Man, was he well spoken. A great wrong was bestowed upon him. Rookie entrant into the big league at the age of 40. What a joke. He'd have been sending them all back to the dugout as fast as they walked in! Well I know how great you were Satchel. The soft spoken 'Negro League' Pitcher with pace like fire. Rest in peace.

@@atribecalledjudah5436 No, no. Well spoken, means you have a gentle clear demeanor. He speaks well. Some people slur words, and say things like "Erm" a lot. Not Satchel Paige. He speaks very well.

Thanks very much for this, which was my first chance ever to hear an interview of Leroy "Satchel" Paige. I have long wondered how he spoke. Being from Cleveland, I have been an Indians' fan since 1958 -- ironically, the very year in which this interview was taped (when Mr. Paige was approximately 52 years old).

He was on of a kind...look at his arms. No muscle just a long limb. Never got tired or hurt...

Actually he had a partially torn rotator cuff in in 1939...and just played through it. Todays athletes don't have a tenth of his toughness.

In 1978 having to be a least 7yrs. to play I have been called satchel paige In a similar situation growing up in East Palo Alto. I was the first in my age group of many good players to be a alternet with the 11 & 12 yrs. I seen them come and I seen them go In my opinion I was the best to do it to get away with it. Ask anybody who I am and they'll say he could play baseball his curve un-hitable. Allstar 8 12 13 14 15. I later found out that throwing so many curveballs would throw my arm out told to me by my coach. In closing with all due respect to Mr. Sachal Paige come and see us on your Opening Day in the mentioned city and support our youth playing may be a little easier for them now come out Martin Luther King Park and the book on Mr. Sachal Paige is a must read. Salute!

Satch did it because his mind was set to do it, somepeople got it and somedont.he was born 50 years after the Civil War, so I'm thinking when he learn how to pitch his arm freed him, Satch was pitching for freedoms.
