Fantastic video, perfectly timed for my Atlanta garden. I’m a 40 year gardener, but pruning still intimidates me. Headed out the door with my pruners and shears. Thx again!

I've become a big fan of Abelia . Kaleidoscope was our first Abelia. We've noticed they tend to lose leaves more in the colder weather than our Miss Lemon and Radiance. Not sure if it's related to the limited amount of green in Kaleidoscope's leaves. We've also found out we prefer mixing Kaleidoscope with other Abelias rather than just mass planting Kaleidoscopes together. We have Miss Lemon next to a Kaleidoscope, and we also have Radiance next to a Kaleidoscope. The contrast of the Abelias really stands out in our yard.

Thank you for sharing! Hoping you will also share when/how you tackle conifers that are trees, particularly in privacy screens. My understanding is that trees like Arborvitae need to be tip pruned to keep them full (or the trees will thin). But is that just the new growth? I would not hesitate to prune a globose shrub, but a tree? That is what I think is most intimidating…

Jim, do I need to cut off browning/bronzing or frost burn on my conifers? Can i just leave them and they will green up again? My upright yews get looong leaders and i cut them to get it to thicken but it just grew long leaders again. Should i leave those long leaders on the yews? Have you heard of "cloud pruning"? Have you tried that method? Do you know any easy topiary forms?

When you prune "spiky" branches toward the center of the shrubs, like you did with the Abelia and Camellia Sasanqua, does this also encourage new internal growth that helps the shrubs maintain a full look? I'm guessing some evergreen shrubs will sprout new growth from your pruning cuts and some won't.

Hello Jim Putnam! We live in Zone 7 Greater Atlanta Area. We planted a host of Japanese Cleyera to become a hedge on the slope of of our large backyard years ago. The tall plants are not doing well and are looking very thin. What do you recommend we do to reverse this such they look thick and vibrant again? Thanks.

By the way, can the pruned Japanese Cleyera cuttings be rooted? If so, how can those cuttings be properly rooted to propagate the plants? Thanks.

Doesn't look too nice/is boring! Fingers crossed new growth'll sprout out, and I do that only once yearly, to keep it in bounds. 🥴🤞🤷🏼‍♀️👩🏼‍🌾💚 =^..^=

Jim buddy, I cringed on the nightlight hinoki couldn't have did it. Lmao you plant abuser....as if I'm not. I destroyed my 2 large fernspray hinoki and you explained exactly why I destroyed them with the nightlights neighboring hinoki. Do you think a weeping yaupon holly would make it zone 6A in a sheltered spot. Im growing needle palms and sabal minor in a sheltered spot with no problem. You think their location would be a spot? They say we're now 7A but we're not due to winter winds and desacation. I mentioned my palms for comparison for their cold tolerance and the limits of zone pushing I can do. That said I can't grow a windmill palm which is number 3 in the cold hardy palm groups tolerance.
