The FULL RESTORATION of a Beautiful Writing Bureau/Secretary Desk.
This Bureau/Desk has been in my customers family for a very long time and is very special to her. Although on first glance this looks in good condition it did have issues and needed a lot more work than you'd think.

Hi Pamela, thanks so much and I’m fully recovered now thankfully. Daisy and Bella are so funny and they definitely keep me entertained 😂😂 I’m really pleased with how my channel is growing and hopefully one day soon i can add more videos for you all to watch. Hi Dave. Cocktail cabinet has gone down a treat and so have its many contents haha. I had about 20 different large bottles of different concoctions. It's down to 2 now thanks to friends. Hey David! The remains of the finish and what it looked like when it was removed suggest that it is colorless nitro lacquer (nitrocellulose lacquer). It was invented around 1920 and quickly became popular because it looked like shellac but was much easier to use. That also correlates well with the time the furniture is from, I think around 1930/40. This varnish tends to go blind when it is old enough, and you can often only guess at the grain of the wood. It is often not easy to remove, especially when several layers have been sprayed on top of each other. Its advantage is that it protects the wood relatively well (as you can see from the ink stains). Good job, fun to watch. Thanks for that!

That turned out beautifully. I love it. Well done. I can sympathise with you about the heat. Here in western Canada it has been hot and dry since April hence all our wild fires. We’ve all been breathing smoky air since May with some days being so bad you can’t see the house across the street. Last week our temperatures hit 41.3C and I have to say, for the first time in years, that I’m looking forward to winter and the snow.

David, I have just started the basics on a bureau almost similar to that you have in this video. I will admit that I intend to restore mine by cribbing from you, as long as you do not object. You have the benefit over me as I am not able to afford the quality of your tools, sander etc; but will attempt to produce a good job. I am only doing this as a practice exercise and have no great desire to sell it on, in fact most of my catchment area would not be able to afford a higher price than say £40 in my experience so I end up donating my finished pieces. But I will be satisfied to get a good finish which is the objective for me, as it is just a hobby piece for me. It's so nice to see Daisy and her Bella helping you with the work, I'm sure they never get in your way.

Hi David. No problem at all, its one of the main reasons i started the channel. I have learnt so much from others on KZfaq. My Sander is an expensive one but I use it endlessly and I saw it as an investment but cheaper Random Orbital sanders are perfectly fine, just go slow with the sanding process and work your way up through the different grits. A few years ago this writing desk would have been seen as old fashioned. Today we aapreciate the quality and design ecause it is perfect for working with a laptop. Plenty of cubby holes for all the correspondence, bank books etc. Plus it is not too big for our modern homes. Another good restoration of a piece of furniture that otherwise, would have been chopped up.

It was quite a ghastly yellow. You toned that down beautifully. Nice job. Bella is a cutie. I have to strip my long haired terrier every summer. This one has been very brutal. Today is is 106, or 41c. Shut cats and dogs both in the house. Had one cat get dehydrated. It was scary.

It could be nitro cellulose lacquer which was used a lot in the 30s 40s and 50s. A cheap way of doing mass produced furniture

The desk looks just lovely. I think the walnut stain brings out the beauty of the veneer more than the original color did. It was interesting to see how the mechanism to raise and drop the lid worked.

MAGNIFICENT what a transformation for your client she must have been absolutely delighted but can I just say you go beyond restoring you add that little extra to tip it over the edge of perfection ( the rosewood stain interior a lovely touch ) and can I add the wee dogs are adorable,love your videos. Considering there wasn’t any repairs as such to carry out, it certainly required a lot of work to prep this thoroughly before you could start the finish. Fantastic end product David. I’m sure the client will be over the moon Ps I have a bureau here for you when you’re ready 🤣🤣
