What I find fascinating is how different people approach these beautiful bonsai. I removed flower buds once when I did a late winter (February) 'hard' prune to establish better and shorter ramification for May. Pruning back to one or two inches on all of the long shoots meant I got a load of new shoots much closer to the trunk. At the same time I made sure to reduce the shoot junctions to just '2' rather than the '4 or 5' it normally has. That was worth sacrificing flowering and all the energy was used to establish that new growth. Generally i will prune hard in June/July (which azalea love) to establish tighter ramification on the new flowering shoots it produces. If you prune any of this 'new' growth then of course you lose the opportunity for flowers. Generally, I have not noticed any massive difference in growth when the flowers have been removed early but that is just in myy experience. Cheers for this Jason

Thanks for this detailed info Xav 🙏 I think it’s pretty much variants on the same theme. I could have pruned mid to late last year and maybe saved some additional energy on the flower buds themselves.

Very interesting video Jason and some excellent points on Azaleas were covered. I have to say that I haven't tried growing an azalea as a bonsai, but this has inspired me

Lovely tutorial on Satsukis! I'm still learning how to manage my garden rhodos and azaleas so this information is really helpful there too! Beautiful structures that you've been developing. It will be well worth the wait when you are ready for the flowers.

Thanks for the info! My grandparents have a huge 3 meter rhododendron bush I’m going to take air layers from, guessing that the ”rules” that apply to azalea also apply to rhododendrons.(?)

Great video Jason. I have one small and one larger Satsuki azalea. The larger of the two refuses to flower yet the smaller of the two does. They are both planted in kanuma and chopped sphagnum moss. Both are watered with rain water, fed with ericaceous fertiliser, and occasionally watered with a dilute solution of Epsom salts. I have repotted both at the correct time of year yet there is still no success with the larger of the two trees. It is very frustrating as I have read numerous articles but still no joy. That's nature for you.

Have you pruned the larger one? Since buds start forming from about mid summer onwards any pruning may inadvertently remove the flowers before they get a chance to form. I also have an azalea that didn’t flower the first year I owned it - so I put this down to being weak and needing to recoup some energy for a season.

@@TheBonsaiGarden Hi Jason. No I didn’t prune it last year so I am stumped as to why it won’t flower. It was in flower when I purchased it about four years ago and I removed all of the dead blooms at the base to prevent seeds from forming.

@MeadowViewBonsai sounds like you are fortunate with your satsuki and local micro-climate. That book is by a Dutch author, rather than a Japanese one but I take your point. It’s simply a resource, just like any other resource, offering information on this specific species - about the wide varieties of flower shapes, colours, leaves etc and basic care and maintenance advice. Helpful to anyone new to azaleas. Obviously there is no substitute for years of hands-on-experience. 👍

Great video mate, I always like people’s azalea video as not very knowledgable myself with this species. Mine really needs some branch with this year as is very leggy. Do you know if this method will help it backbud? I know if you cut them back to old wood, they should bud out. Correct me if I’m wrong however.
@TheBonsaiGarden
@TheBonsaiGarden 3 ай бұрын
Thank you Tom. You are correct. Hard prune after flowering to get strong back budding. Here I am trying to grow more foliage without cutting away the existing foliage - in order to preserve energy and increase growth and particularly trunk thickening. At a later stage I can come in and work in refinement.

I have fairly mild winters here in the uk and no greenhouse or shelter to overwinter my trees. They generally sit outside here all winter and we rarely get temperatures below about -5C and only very occasionally below -10C
