Sattuma is a folk music quartet from Petrozavodsk in Russian Karelia. Is a family quartet based on the idea "from the fathers to the children" and also "from the children to the fathers". Arto Rinne (Toive, Myllärit, Santtu Karhu & Talvisovat, Karelian Folk Music Ensemble) and Dmitri "Dima" Demin (Kantele, Myllärit, Santtu Karhu & Talvisovat) have played together for years. Both have been central on the Petrozavodsk folk music scene for as many years. They have played their instruments, toured home and abroad performing, recording and spreading the Karelian ethno music in the world. Their children, Eila Rinne and Vladik Demin, grew up learning to play classic violin in the Petrozavodsk Conservatory youth studio. Every once in a while the children accompanied their fathers to the neighboring Finland and on Folklandia cruises. They carried their violins along and easily learned several traditional Finnish folk songs, which they performed as a duo. The program developed long and slowly, somewhere back in the mind, but came about by chance. Within a short time, it brought forth great results within the family circle as well as on stage. Sattuma concerts have been met with great enthusiasm in Russia, USA, and Finland.

This is completely Slavic harmonies and rhythm music. This not makes a song Slavic of course, but it is transparent who influence who in this region. May be you do not know but even famouse Carellian "Ievan Polka" melody come from Smolensk dance (see wiki) - because of Smolensk army parts located in the region.

@@astroyeaster9464 Music is several thousands years old. This recording is 10 years old. Between there is an evolution of ideas, harmonies, rhythm patterns, instruments etc. - Even 100 years ago it was "another song". Still this song is a result of Slavic music influence (music that had been spreading in 18xx on bazzars, trade festivals, winter festivals). I say it just to state that the opposition between Karellian songs like this and Ukrainian folk is sensless, they are from the same roots.

Oleg Vasyanovich: there is no difference between "kiitos" or "kiitosh", the latter is a Karelian-language version. But Karelian is spoke in different ways by different Karelians. I think that You in Your native Tver Karelia used "passibo" instead of kiitosh? Your ancestors arrived in Tver Karelia in the 17th century escaping from the Swedish repressions so that Your "historical" homeland is on the Western shores of Lake Ladoga.....

Yeah, East-Karelian is actually a dialect of Finnish. So I wouldn't call it an accent, just one version of Finnish, though the East-Karelians never where part of a common state with the western Finns. But before 20th century the border was never tight, people continued their natural contacts, like they had done for thousands of years, before there was any Sweden or Russia, as states. These guys may be Russian citizens, but at least some of them have age old roots in Finnish language and culture
