Could be an audience member, but when a TV skit isn't working for the audience and you hear only a couple or so loud laughs, it's usually the show writers hanging back (and who apparently believe that everything they write this funny). I've been to a few comedy show tapings (not SNL), and in spite of the pre-taping, audience coaches (yes, they exist) coming out and imploring the audience to always laugh on cue (even on _repeated_ performances), the full audience sometimes just can't come through on the duds; that's where the chucklehead writers come in to "help" things along.

Seriously, how in the hell did he get on SNL. He literally brings NOTHING to the table. He can't do characters and he is not funny at all. There isn't any skit that he done that I found even remotely funny. When I think of SNL, I think of people with Electric personalities on set. People who can make the audience laugh with little effort. I really don't understand it.

I enjoy his more stand up comedic style during Weekend Update. While personally I am not a fan of his role in most sketches, he is really good about telling jokes and talking about various topics without relying too heavily on pop culture or impersonations.

BadaBingg Bill Hader actually got him the interview with Lorne. So maybe it was like a favor thing or they saw potential. He’s the youngest member ever on SNL and his father was a firefighter who died in 9/11 while rescuing people, so I think that endears to a lot of the cast/producers.
