@@Bloodreign1 RayForce had to be renamed to Layer Section on the Sega Saturn (and then on the PC) apparently for trademark problems with the home versions of the game. I don't know which other game or product may have affected this, but apparently that's the reason. This was not the case with RayStorm, and I suppose it could have been released for the Sega Saturn retaining its original name like it did on the PlayStation (and on the PC), but I suppose they prefered to keep naming continuity on the same platform and rebranded the Sega Saturn version as such (funnily enough, the PC had the Layer Section name too for the first game but then switched to RayStorm for this one).

First game remains the best of the trilogy (RayForce/Layer Section/Gunlock/Galactic Attack), RayCrisis is the first games prequel, this one is sort of a side story and does not connect to the first game at all.

Its a pity that was just good sold in Japan, very sorrowly.

The PS1 and PC Engine also had notoriety for having a boatload of shmups on them.

At that time no one needed to buy Taito, they did fine on their own. These days I wish they could still be independent, but that's the nature of the beast, with Squeenix owning them, and not really doing a whole lot with the company. For a time during the PS2 era, Taito were porting arcade games for other companies, or licensing and releasing games from smaller developers. No one wants a console maker to own a game developing studio like Taito, a Konami, or a Capcom, no one wants that companies library to be exclusive to one console. Besides, at the time Sega was bleeding money on their own, no way they could buy Taito.

Either he's probably been affected by Taito boomers or too quick to judge. You see, some RAY series fanbase didn't get along quite well. As a matter of fact, some RAY STG Japanese wannabe account accused me of being a Rayforce/Gunlock/Layer Section/ Galactic Attack elitist just because I told him Raystorm is as dark as Raycrisis & Rayforce combined, if not darker since you have to deal with the reality that you're no longer dealing with the stereotypical evil AI who wants to eradicate all life forms. In Raystorm, humanity is its own bane of its existence. From your sides, there is no justice as you're dealing with a fascist freedom lunatic freaks, Secilia Federation while you're being tasked to defend an obvious totalitarian space regime, Star Federation. Of course, you don't want to defend both of them after knowing that, but you're fighting for something you want to cherish and protect and what you believe in, but that's inevitable. It's a matter of fact that politics singlehandedly killed humanity in Raystorm universe instead of Con-Human's eugenics morals. However, Taito boomers still persist that Rayforce beats every single thing Raystorm could be capable of, especially those who were disappointed of R-Gear being canceled. Oh, and don't let me tell you that console wars affected this too. I don't know why he thought I was Rayforce elitist, tho. Maybe being dark = bad in his mindset? And no. I don't feel heroic or anything after understanding Raystorm. I killed billions of humans in the process of operation Raystorm. I can relate to the pilots that they fight solely to protect those they love and not to serve the Star Federation.
