Satyricon is one of the biggest and better known names in black metal. It's also one of the few bands of which many people around the world know a peculiar story or two. Jerry goes through here some of his personal experiences and then some. Hope you enjoy!

I think that's part of the problem with Black Metal that the music is so dark and serious that you create this image in your mind of what these guys must be like. When I started listening to the second wave around 2006 I saw a Dimmu Borgir video that I really liked, so I bought their home DVD, and it had them making videos of themselves in the bathroom, drinking and listening to WASP. I traded it back in because I felt disillusioned that these guys weren't evil at all. Even Fenriz, who is funny as fuck, said that all the "Black Packers" come to Norway and they expect to meet them running around in the forest being evil all the time. I was reading the liner notes to my Morbid box set and Dead was recalling meeting Quorthon for the first time and he said Quorthon acted like a real rock star, so Dead came out of it feeling like Quorthon was a poser. Even Tom G. Warrior felt the same way when he was in Hellhammer and he met Venom for the first time during an album signing, they didn't live up to the persona they created in his mind of being all evil. So he threw done his hellhammer demo to Venom at the table and said to them that Hellhammer is heavier than Venom. Venom were my favorite band when i was 15 and I thought they were serious about that stuff, and to me I thought that was awesome, it made me feel even more rebellious. If you told me when I was 15 that Venom didn't believe any of the stuff it would have been the same as telling an 8 year old that wrestling is fake...you wouldn't hear any of it. I think at the end of the day though a lot of these Black Metal guys are just regular guys who like unregular things. That's how I feel about myself. I love Black Metal, but I'm an Atheist. I have developed a yin yang philosophy that there's light and dark in us all, and there's no shame in that. Black Metal lets me express, and explore my dark side so that I can be a normal person the rest of the time. I think when you only hear the music of a band there's no way that the individuals can live up to the mystic that we create of them in our heads, because they are just regular people just like everyone else, with the same flaws as all of us. And just like the rest of us, some of them are assholes. I try not to focus on the individuals anymore, just the music. Because if I stopped listening to every band because the individuals didn't live up to my expectations of them than I'd have nothing to listen to. I'd have to smash all my Danzig, Metallica, Slayer, and Venom albums for sure lol.

So very true and I think this is the difference between being young and being older - and like you said, the same thing applies to things like wrestling and other "played" stuff. But even at this age (42), I still think there are people who are to be taken seriously even though I know these people are not "evil" and then there are pretenders, aka posers, who are just in "because it's cool". And that's one thing that makes black metal different from people who just want to make music like that but not to do anything with ideology or "dangerous topics" such as satanism, being anti-religous etc. It doesn't bother me that people do normal things - of course they do. Fenriz and the like still need to wash their underwear, eat like normal people do and all that. But people who are afraid to go deeper than just music, when it comes to black metal, are not black metal people in my opinion.

For me Black metal is just really embracing that dark primal side that exist in all of us and saying that it's okay that you have these feelings because it's natural. I've always felt that those are the types of people who are drawn to Black Metal. It's weird to think that there are people who are only into black metal for any reason other than a pure love for it. I know Fenriz has talked about King Ov Hell being a huge poser. I don't know the reasons for this but King Ov Hell has made some great music with some Iconic musicians. I love the Godseed album, and Abbath's solo album.

Baltzeg Pretty much agreed here, too. I know similar views about posers and poser bands here in Finland, too, and some of them are more general (Myrkur for example), whilst some go on more personal level. It's like this: water may look like vodka, but the taste and effect are clearly different. Thats okay as long as water doesn't pretend being vodka. :)

Like I said, in terms of black metal (you know, black metal as a genre lyricwise, ideologically etc.) Satyricon sounds is a funny band. Not a bad band musically, of course (or that is up for debate anyhow), but in black metal I find these stories very funny and hard to believe. If Satyricon was like Manowar or some hard rock band, maybe this behavior and stories would make more sense, you know? I don't know if it's just me but I couldn't believe most bm bands would pull these kind of stunts and acts. That's why I find this all so funny and even ridiculous. I understand that some people don't. That's why this video probably got so many downvotes, too. People don't want to hear "nasty stories" about their favorite artists. They want them to be cool. I think you actually gave me an idea for a new opinion video, so thank you!

My brother met Frost in June '19 when we visited Oslo to go hiking and drinking in the pubs. He said he was actually kind of awkward to talk to and ironically we joked later he was almost trapped in a weird persona everywhere he goes. Of all the semi-famous people in that pub, Frost was totally decked out in leathers, eyeliner, studs, whatever. At least my brother got to ask him what drums and mics he used on Dark Medieval Times! Met Geir Bratland and a few others that week too. Good times!

For everything that is great about Black Metal, there is also one very negative element that rarely appears anywhere else - megalomania and mass delusion. Metal is inherently theatrical, so there is always some element of on-stage persona, as for it to be appropriate in establishing mood among an audience. But in Black Metal, a little bit of attention can very often produce a very strange kind of OVERLY confident person who really shouldn't be so. I was watching a Mayhem video years ago, and there were some backstage interviews with Maniac and Blasphemer, and seeing the whole make-up/mirror process was really unsettling. These people are rock stars with a smaller range of groupies. I can't imagine Jon DePlachett from Necrovore sitting in front of a mirror, like a woman, patting powder onto his face. But I can imagine Lars Ulrich doing it, because he's a rock star. Then consider the personality of someone like Varg Vikernes. Forget the politics, and forget all of the negative opinions people have about him, and just take him as a man. He has a KZfaq channel with hundreds of videos on it. He might be saying the most amazing stuff in the world, but the content is not the issue - it's the audacity. Any level of media attention, and Black Metal produces people who can't control their ego, and it is done to embarrassing degree. Or maybe, we need to stop beating around the bush and ask - why are Norwegians more likely to think the sun shines out of their arses than anyone other people? What is it about Norway that produces such bratty princess musicians? Because Finland has a superior metal roster, and it doesn't seem to produce this level of mindless media whoring. (Old period) Impaled Nazarene, Barathrum, Beherit, Unholy, Thergothon, Skepticism, Suuri Shamaani, Archgoat, Demilich, Rippikoulu, Purtenance, and all the other great death metal bands. But none of those bands decided to have such an extracurricular presence. And maybe the answer lies in the quality of music. It becomes almost impossible to critique the music of bands like Burzum, Mayhem and Satyricon, because their activities outside of music are often designed to create controversy and myth. The Finnish bands didn't engage in media circus, so they didn't receive the same level of bizarre fanboy appeal as the Norwegian bands. But from a purely musical perspective, Norway had no means to compete with the Finns. And hilariously, the most musically accomplished of the Norwegians, Fenriz, is also the most humble. Between Darkthrone (Death and Black Metal periods) and Neptune Towers, Fenriz pretty much covered of excellent strange music for Norway, and he did it without becoming a rock star or KZfaq whore. And to cut a short story long, many Swedes are in the same boat as Norwegians. Watain began as a very boring and generic band, and evolved (very quickly) into a pop band with Black Metal aesthetics. So what granted Erik Danielsson his reputation? Well, it was never the music. It was his willingness to be an idiot in the spotlight, and make sure his face was plastered everywhere you look. Finland needs to get some better neighbours, or you need to station a Simo Hayha at every border crossing... and try to get Nightwish on the other side of those borders :D P.S. Hail's 'Inheritance of Evil' continued Finland's legacy of glory into the new millennium. That album is a portal into a very strange world...

A super comment! Couldn't have put it out there by myself. You should join me in the Rauta "studio!" To continue and reply a bit: I have my theories about the mental qualities of Norwegian people - and to some extent this applies to Swedish as well - compared to Finns. We most certainly have a different mindset and this is reflected on music and the bands as well. I probably should do a opinion video about this, even though it would make people pissed. Your view on Fenriz is similar to mine: met him once and what I've read of him, all comes back to him being humble and not a rockstar vs some of the names you dropped here. Watain case is really interesting because it seems to be like Swedish Satyricon in many aspects. Gotta say, I hope most people would read your comment. I really do. Well put.

@nebuchadnezzarii5421
@nebuchadnezzarii5421 6 жыл бұрын
+Rauta Our friend Trygve Grundvik was kind enough to give a great demonstration of the same reductive, obnoxious personality described in the video. We provide a reasoned perspective on specific behaviours, and he replies with: "hurr hurr, Norwegian black metal bands are more famous than Finnish ones. Waaaaah >:(" My point, condensed, was about how certain people deal with attention, and inquiring about the higher tendency for this personality to present in Norway and Sweden. From that, he somehow extracted something relating to fame envy (??)... Absolutely bizarre... as if fame is considered an ideal trait in underground metal. Norwegians did something that is very strange and uncharacteristic in underground metal music. Metal, specifically the underground stuff, is unique, because it has always conducted itself like a cult. Releases were limited, and measures were taken (grotesque artwork, horror themes, etc) to keep outsiders away. Within metal, the more you know and study the genre, the more respect you gain (which is very fair and logical), because people are drawn towards those who can provide them more information and a richer experience. So an interesting thing about the Norwegians, especially Varg (but not exclusively) is that he used ignorance to help push a mass media agenda, and then dissociated from the whole thing to show he was "above" it. He still uses these disinformation tactics (here, I refer exclusively to his views on metal). Vikernes still maintains that the Black Metal bands of the 80s were "Thrash Metal" (his words). He does this to present an idea that what happened in Norway was completely unprecedented and mythic. And his tactic worked - when most people think of Black Metal, they associate it with the Norwegian sound. But Black Metal had no distinct sound - the first Sodom EP is Black Metal, Master's Hammer is Black Metal, Necrovore was Black Metal, Barathrum is Black Metal, Poison were Black Metal, Parabellum were Black Metal, Necrodeath and Ghostrider were Black Metal, Abhorer were Black Metal etc etc. All of those bands are black metal bands, but none of them look or sound like the Norwegian bands. Some Black Metal sounds closer to Death Metal, and some Black Metal sounds closer to Speed Metal, but there was an age of distinct and unique Black Metal bands, and it passed after the Norwegian circus. But through constant reinforcement of the Norwegian myths, through FAME and INFAMY, history was skewed. It might not seem important now, but in 200 years time, musical historians will study Metal as a strange movement, and historical study is like Chinese whispers - for every idiot that speaks before thinking, disinformation is created. The most "famous" Norwegian and Swedish bands, almost exclusively, eliminated the sense of community that existed in the underground. The genre had real potential - it spread worldwide, but it always had a distinctive local element. Just like ethnic culture... South American Black Metal was adventurous and wild (Hadez, Vulcano, etc)...Singapore/Malay Black Metal was more Death-like and rigid, but still feral (Abhorer, Nuctemeron, etc) ... Finnish Black Metal had a uniquely primitive spirit that emphasised the harshness of nature and it's connection to the religiously profane (Barathrum, Beherit, Impaled Nazarene, etc). So it was very much like the natural system of tribal/ethnic cultures that naturally arises in humans, but it was an underground, dissident movement that practiced a form of "artistic eugenics" and kept only the strong. The (selected) Norwegians brought the equivalent of globalisation to Black Metal. They, megalomaniacs, used extra curricular activities and hype to draw attention to something that they were happy to claim as their own. They even stamped their authority on their false claim (see: Mortiis vs. Impiety). And that was the problem - the Norwegians were famous people in a movement than deliberately avoided fame, and then they claimed and changed the face and character of the movement by refusing to shut up. This is an interesting generation - the past discarded the information of the general population. Now, our words are immortalised through the internet. I wonder how many people think of that as a privilege... the ability to pass information on to a worldwide network. Personally, I do think it's a privilege...
@RautaMetal

Very interesting points once again and thanks for contributing. I gotta say I agree with what you wrote, most parts anyway. It's kind of a hilarious thing - in retrospect - that Norwegian thing became such a myth and "bigger than life" characters when we are talking about black metal. This all became a fertile ground for a kind of perverse hybrid of rock'n'roll fame and black metal underground. Nox, mixed in together this has given us bands such as Satyricon, Dimmu Borgir, Emperor (to some extent anyway), Mayhem etc. which have taken black metal to mainstream in a way. How much is "some mainstream" is of course up for debate, but we can that with an honest voice. Deniers will deny everything, of course, but it' won't wipe away proof. One interesting of sorts, even if not that good as a documentary movie, is this Norwegian doc called Blackhearts. I recently watched it as it was shown on Finnish national tv and streaming service and it felt awkward because it tried to nail Norway as the creator of black metal and strengthen this myth of Norwegian BM even more. To me it felt partially like an holiday advertisement movie. "Come to Norway and see all the cult places by yourself!" So, I don't know what's the secret ingredient in the Norwegian tap water (like the saying goes in Finland....), but there clearly is something because it makes these people act like this. Not all, or even most of course, but still... For Sweden it's a whole different culture: be it about pop music, rock music, electronic dance music or whatever, Sweden has always been a strong suit in music industry. And that's _industry_, not some underground activity. Once again, we all know there are bands that are true to underground and not having dreams of rock'n'roll success and whatever, but still. Anyway, I think this conversation has given me some ideas for a future opinion video about the subject. I'll give this some more thinking and come back to this later on. Cheers once again for a good and well-put comment. Conversation is a valuable thing.

The story about the girlfriend of your friend sounds really like a Mötley Crüe anecdote, and yes it's not respectable from a band which had this image of honour and pride. The dreams of the talented underground band i had first has changed with time. As for the headbanging lesson, i clearly remember Frost asked me if i could headbang correctly while playing guitar, and yes i thought it was a bit weird the way it was asked and it didn't suit with the image of a black metal band i had but i thought it was more of a kind of a boys band attitude ^^. I don't say we don't have to improve a show, to train and warm-up for live performance, have certain dress codes etc...but it sounds weird and unnatural to me. Overall funny video

I'm not stating it as a fact, but as an opinion what I have gathered by my personal experience (live, television, interviews etc.) as well as from other people's comments (you can see some of them listed as comments here). I LIKE to think Frost is equal, but it seems he is not. It doesn't matter how much people shout his name and respect him as musician (I like his drumming a lot personally in many bands), but to me he doesn't seem like an equal member. I think Satyricon gets a similar kind of hate towards them as Dimmu, it's because they won't make primitive black metal (which by the way I also like) anymore, the community really needs to ditch this musical conservatism, it's stifling creativity, in my opinion they have lots of great songs from this ongoing black and roll era of theirs like: Black Crow on a Tombstone, K.I.N.G, Fuel for Hatred, The Pentagram Burns, Now Diabolical and Deep Calleth Upon Deep.
@RautaMetal
@RautaMetal 5 жыл бұрын
That might be true for some people, but not for me. IMO they never made primitive black metal, not particularily raw neither. In my opinion their diva behavior and in general poorer song-writing just became not very interesting. Kinda Metallica effect, if you will, with Satyr being black metal's Lars Ulrich. And yes, I'm fully aware that some people picked the latest Satyricon among their favorite albums of the year, but then agian, some people like St. Anger, too. So, different strokes for different people. KING, Fuel for Hatred etc. are all good. This new one? Not my cup of tea. Doesn't even feel like the same band anymore.

I think Satyricon is an extension of Sigurd Wongraven's personality. They guy obviously has that overachiever nature and he always has to do better than before. One has to respect that at least. xD Satyr is actually a really nice guy. I don´t understand why you have to bash him so much. I met him several times, he was always polite, friendly and humble and he has a good sense of humor . Yes, he likes wine and fast cars and he´s also into art. And yes, he can talk a lot. But he´s an extroverted person. He is the complete opposite to Frost, he´s an introvert, very shy and humble but also polite.

No worry, didn't take as such! And I totally know what you mean. Sometimes these musicians have bad days and sometimes they are just douchebags - like the rest of us. I have met Necrobutcher only once, and that was late 90's, so back then they maybe weren't so big "rockstars" so to speak. But then again, it was in a bar instead of being an interview. So, it's a matter of time and space also.

Well , Satyricon have reached that kind of level that they can fuckin be proud of what they've done. You cant expect some raw sounding demo black metal band to get hairbrushed . All these guys want them to be humble when they in fact dont make so humble music . Who cares how they react or what do they do when the music speaks for itself. And yes , Satyr is satyricon, You cant imagine satyricon without him .. as dimmu borgir without Shagrath. I think this statement is kinda mute and a little emotional of what this guy is speaking.

Satyricon takes themselves way too seriously. Satyr thinks he is doing something innovative and at the same time spearheading the black-metal genre, and poor Frost just goes along with whatever Satyr does. They have alienated half of their original fan base and now attract 40 year old Dream Theater fans at their gigs. Congratulations.

I dont consider myself fan of black metal, i like more metal in general, and i like Satyricon and Dimmu Borgir. ofc i like them because they can be heard without being so much extreme and with some melodical riffs. They are funny? Probably yes because they werent in the activity of burning churches, killing people or stuff like that typical of Norweigan black metal and i understand their black is not the most pure one. Nice you made this video! :) I have to point out Frost is even more pompous that Satyr, despite being "humble". It's an interesting dynamic, as if Frost is a "co-dependent narcissist" (in armchair psychologist's terminology), sort of borrowing his pompousness from Satyr. Satyr is actually somewhat more down to earth, while Frost seems to have lost it - for example here: "In this new album we go even further, dig even deeper" (how deep exactly?:); "This album might be resembling Rebel Extravaganza" (?!). kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ntCeZpNo3Zychac.html It's hard to picture Frost without Satyr at this point. Someone who toured with them in 1999, was saying Frost followed Satyr like a dog even then. You mention Satyr's leadership; it seems his entourage consists of fanboys who refer to him as "fearless leader" and again follow him around like puppies. It's funny how a middle aged man allows himself to be bossed around, to which I've been witness. Exercising backstage... yes, I've been made to wait for autographs on a few occasions, while Satyr runs the treadmill after a gig.:) Taking BM to the US? Ask Proscriptor about it?:) (Toward the end of the video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jb2fjdqkyLe4mI0.html In fact, Frost is quite level-headed about it here, while Grutle is as arrogant as he usually is: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/iM5gnMudnNjRXYU.html

Thanks again for your comment completed with links. I gotta check them out later on! Btw. I remember a Satyricon video on Finnish tv back in 1997 or so, and in that interview it seemed like Frost was on a leash like a puppy or something. Kinda like a gimp without a leather/rubber gimp suit... That view of those two around the table has burnt into back of my head. It still feels absurd. Been made to wait _a few_ times when Satyr is doing treadmll? Mind-blown! Gotta say you have a patience of a zen master! Oh yeah, I forgot to mention Absu when I was listing US bands. And probably a few other important ones, too.
@insightfloww
@insightfloww 6 жыл бұрын
My patience scares me.:) (Extremely stubborn really.) Of course, I cannot be sure what Satyr was doing, but there were people from his crew who seemed quite concerned with me waiting for three hours in the cold and rain, so they'd inform me he'd be "finished with the treadmill". I do have to give it to both Frost and Satyr that they were always talkative, however. Your impression has been confirmed by a few other people who have been around Satyricon - they have witnessed the same and express the same amount of disbelief at the Satyr/Frost s/m dynamics. I myself was stunned how Satyr bosses around their photographer, yelling at him arrogantly during a show: "Hey! Take a picture here, take a picture there! Not like this, like that!" Did I say Satyr was down to earth... nah, he's equally out of touch. Just came across a recent interview where he nags again about the "spirituality" of this new record - one might think Satyricon are the new kings of blues&gospel or at least Godfathers of Soul. In that video I linked, Proscriptor throws away a Norwegian flag - I'm surprised he didn't burn one.:) I know black metal is supposed to have originated in Norway, but I find that particular scene quite boring (much prefer the Greek and especially Mid-Eastern scene). Satyr talks about how this song "Brethen In The Dark" was inspired by Norwegian folk; well, that song sucks. It doesn't help either that all these Norwegians are so full of themselves.
@RautaMetal
@RautaMetal 6 жыл бұрын
3 hours in cold and rain? Wow. I could never ever imagine myself doing that unless I got paid! But kinda cool "we" still have fans like you. Then again it's sad that band rather chooses a treadmill training than meeting a fan, and that alone tells us a lot of the band. Spirituality - eh... sorry, I have to go laugh somewhere. Yeah, Norway is such an elitist country in a way: economically independent, high pays and whatnot. And also not big on crimes etc. So basically a true life version of what elves are usually depicted in fantasy literature: being above others so to speak. Then again this kind of bm is just a result of people having thigs "too good". A result of having not big problems like violence, poverty, lack of food, disesases etc. I don't think bm should have been originated from Norway or other Nordic countries, since there were bands from all over the world doing that before Norway: think of Hellhammer from Switzerland, Venom from UK, Bathory from Sweden, Sarcofago from Brazil, Von from the US and so forth...

Either way none of their material has ever been my taste. I've never understood why so many people worship them, but at the same time it doesn't really matter to me. All I'm saying is that I never saw them as an authentic black metal band and that I could care less about their music. However I will say the pre-Satyricon vocal work that Satyr did with Thorns was excellent. It's a shame that Thorns never got a chance to take off because that brief project had a lot more potential and authentic black metal qualities than Satyricon has ever had.

I've always been more towards the Emperor, Burzum, Darkthrone side of the black metal spectrum. When there are current era bands like Evilfeast that are consistently releasing new material that is just as cold, grim, and rotten to the core as what you'd expect to hear back in the early 90's, the more modern and produced sounding bands like Satyricon, Behemoth, Dimmu, Enslaved, etc seem like just a mere distraction in comparison. There's something about that cold, atmospheric, rotten to the core, sinister and authentic black metal sound that just penetrates the void and gives me a certain sense of spiritual fulfillment that the more modern and heavily produced sounding bands fail to deliver. If you want to experience a grim and frozen blast from the past in 2018 I highly suggest any of Evilfeast's material. Even their promo tape sounds like an early 90's classic masterpiece.
