Thanks for bringing up the best mushrooms for subbing meat! This is especially timely on a Friday during Lent (abstaining from meat is an obligation for Catholics on Ash Wednesday & Fridays thru Good Friday). Tips like these can help people make more vegetarian meals, and possibly veer toward a Vegan lifestyle.

Unfortunately even the "recyclable" plastic containers that mushrooms come in aren't truly recyclable - resin types one and two can often be re-used after processing once or twice in less fragile applications (like re-formulating it as part of a larger whole of other materials), but other resin types usually can't be processed for even that if you're in the US and most countries. That little "recycling" symbol you see on the packaging is not a recycling symbol - it's a resin ID code, which plastic manufacturers lobbied to have put onto packaging - officially it's an entirely different symbol from the recycling symbol, not meant to imitate it, but clearly tricking people it is a recycling symbol was the intent of the designers.

Wine caps are noticeably absent from your list. I would consider them a common mushroom because they're the most ubiquitous garden mushroom, being the easiest to grow. All you need is woodchips as a substrate, which many gardeners use as mulch. Wine caps grow bigger than portobellos and are used much the same way, but their flavor is more woody and earthy.

I tend to use those plastic cartons as beds for seedlings namely quinoa and certain other sprouts ceilings that are eventually going to turn into more delicious plants let’s put it that way or flowers depending if I’m in the mood to make flowers you know so they can be recycled as planters will tip in case you don’t want to throw them in the recycle bin and you’re looking for something really good to plant some thing you would like to try I recommend quinoa by the way quinoa grows really rapidly with very little water and it needs very little water to be honest to keep growing beautifully if you forget to water it and it gets dry believe it or not you can just add water when it looks almost dead and it will come back to life and the seeds are really delicious even when they’re just plain sprouts just an idea to think about. In my house we try not to waste anything that comes in a package although we do have recycle bins.

Lions mane, oysters and maitake are pretty easy to identify when foraging. Of course, do your homework and know what you’re doing but it’s worth learning. We were at the Asian market last week and we were like OMG, we just found $15 worth of oysters while hiking yesterday! In Maryland, we usually find them on Tulip poplars, often very near a certain. Also maitake are usually much larger when you find them in the wild. In our area they usually grow around the base of oaks, and you can especially find them tucked in the crevices of red oaks in late summer/ early fall. The 2021 maitake harvest wasn’t great last year compared to 2020 but we still had enough for our favorite use, vegan jerky, and we had enough to give away and also tide us over for months. We haven’t found as many lions mane while hiking, but when we do, it’s always a happy day!

@@SauceStache I mean usually when you try to replace meat, you want to get the nutritional values that you’re missing. But apparently I’ve done my research and you can actually compare protein intake of mushrooms to meat if you go by calories instead of grams. Like 100 calories worth of chicken has only a little more protein than 100 calories of mushrooms. You’d have to get a lot of mushrooms though

Why mushrooms are packed like that: in the produce section at the grocery store, often times veggies, fruit and mushrooms will come in bulk and its up to the produce workers to package it. The store is too cheap to buy different types of packaging, so they just throw the mushrooms into the same trays that other veggies get, because that's what the store buys for them to use.

You better tell people that they should drink a lot of water oyster mushrooms are high in fiber and because of that they can constipate you it’s highly recommended that when eating oyster mushrooms that you drink a great deal at least that is what I was told by both the doctor and found on the cover of one of these oyster mushroom packets. I don’t know if it’s true or not but I haven’t taken any chances. Would really like to know if it’s true.
