Saugatuck Railroad Bridge opening 7-3-15

Several times a year the railroad bridge over the Saugatuck River in Westport is opened for maritime traffic. Connecticut has eight moveable bridges between Cos Cob and Groton. The oldest is in Norwalk and was built in 1896. The newest is in Groton and dates from 1919.

This was my favorite job on Metro Region and Metro North. There were two GMC diesels to run the bridge up and down. When I was the operator there, we did not need a bridge gang to get it open, Age has caught up with these bridges.

Yeah, I saw it too. He must have been relieved that the bridge worked on more time. He was most likely fearful that his boss would fire him if they messed up the project.

Hung out at lunch many a day under the I-95 bridge in the background, burning one and maybe some fishing.

And then the Cos Cob bridge just has the trains coast through a gap with no power.

All these bridges need to be replaced with high level fixed bridges.

That would be incredibly expensive

This is the Saugatuck River bridge in Westport, not the Norwalk “Walk” Bridge in Norwalk

Nice video John, good camera work, coherent editing etc. The FOV was spot on... I subscribed for future updates... If you have a sec. give my channel a look, several train vids... My video "NORFOLK TUG EXPRESS" features a rail "lift" bridge opening and my first catch of a SD90mac, also with the Philly skyline in the background... Thanks much, Moses...
