I just watched this video and saw your comment. I can explain it briefly-mil dots are actually means "milliradian dots". Each dot is 1/1000 of a radian which is a unit of measure that can be converted into degrees. 2pi radians=360 degrees. At 100 yards 1 mil dot is 3.6 inches. @ 700 yards 1 mil dot is 25.2 inches. (3.6inches*7)

The metric system is a base 10 system. This makes the mathematical calculations involved with range adjustment exponentially easier. This, of course, means you need to start thinking of things in terms of meters and centimeters.

The mil-dot system was not first used by the military in scopes for rifles, but by artillerymen and submariners, both of whom need to calculate leads (aim-off angles) over long distances against relatively small targets which may be moving. Eventually, someone adapted that system for use by the individual marksman with a scoped rifle. If memory serves, it was the Marines back in the 1970s or 1980s, but could be mistaken... gotta go look that one up...

on the military arms channel,they were hitting a 16 inch gong at 1000 yards with a $600.00 Savage .308 and a $230.00 scope. you only need $1000.00 and a lot of skill. done
@roadneymiller79417 жыл бұрын
I agree 100%, it's more practice and skill than anything else. All anybody has to do is look at the history of military snipers and the guns/scopes they used, they used pretty basic equipment.
@halfdollar867 жыл бұрын
you dont even need 1000 bucks, there are guys with savage axis and ruger american predators banging steel at extremely long range. With that being said, banging steel and winning competitions is totally different and there is a reason that the guys that win have nice equipment.
@joslinnick11 жыл бұрын
Every bullet type and gun will drop differently, due to different ballistics, muzzle velocity, and weight. The best way to know 100% without guessing is to progressively shoot out further and further, noting how much drop your gun has at varying distances until you get out to 600 yards.
@charliewilson8512 жыл бұрын
It'll shoot straight. It can outshoot most people. I hit a 12" steel circle at 900m or 984 yards yesterday. Once is lucky, so I hit it twice in a row to be sure.

If you go the savage site, look at their Law Enforcement Series. They have an 10 FCP in a couple of different stocks. The extra "C" just means it has a removable magazine. They are a great gun by the way.

There's no hard and fast generic answer to that question... you have to learn your scope, your rifle and your loads, and then systematically test everything at the range. Once you have an accurate zero on your scope for whatever distance you have dialed in, then you begin checking the hold-over/hold-under every 25 yards out to the limit of your range. You do that for each type of ammo you are using. If you change your load, scope, etc. - you need to do the process again.

You are right. It is very complicated. I am not seeing the advantage that mil dot has over moa. It seems the industry standard is built around moa with most scopes measuring 1/4" click @100 yd. I have a couple of Nikons that are 1/8" @100yd. I will continue to educate myself on the mil dot system. It seems that a fair amount of people use it. Although not many people can seem to explain by example why they prefer it.

Nice rifle! I have a Savage 10 FCP-K, which is a little newer than yours. The stock is better, but it's still not a good tactical stock even though it's their "Law Enforcement" line. I like the trigger, but I don't care for the heavy bolt lift on the action. I'm going to fix that buy cutting down the spring and doing some polishing. I'll probably also run the B&C stock since that seems like a solid option, but I'll have to get it inlet by a smith, and I want the CDI bottom metal too.

5th - You need to understand MOA (Minute of Angle) This may take you a bit to get your head wrapped around the MOA concept. Once you do it is all to worth it. Example - If I were to take my 338 lapua & shoot 600 yds I with my current load I would have to remember to dope the scope 46.4 clicks or 11.6 MOA. Believe me counting 11.6 moa is not only faster but easier & your scope is already designed for moa counting. Hope this all helps.
@redsite00111 жыл бұрын
@lowrider9367 I use both MIL and moa. One MIL equals 3.6 inches@100 yards and one 36 inches (one yard) at 1000 yards (MIL will also come up to one meter at 1000 meters) so 3.6 multiplied by 7 will be 25.2. Here's how it goes: 100yd-3.6" 200yd-7.2" 300yd-10.8" did I answer your question?
@GeorgiaBoy196111 жыл бұрын
Dave G., regarding CDI - the makers of the bottom metal on the Savage 308 in the video, the company's full name is CDI Precision Gunworks, and they are out of Florida. They have a website, so check them out. You can either order a conversion kit and have it done where you live or send your rifle to them for modification. Their prices are reasonable. I love my Savage 10FCP but like dribeker - don't care for the stock mag that comes with it.

@NoWunUNO15 I did hit the 1000 yard target about 4 times. The 22 inch target was elevated and the mirage was so terrible that spotting the misses was impossible. As soon as the weather cools down i will go back out. Hard to shoot in 110* weather.

It almost to me seems like lots of people buy these types of reticles just because the military uses them. If you don't know your equipment your aimlessly throwing lead. Someday I would like to sit down with someone to learn hands on about MILDOT. My challenge is finding that person.

The sweet spot is 44 gr of varget with sierra 175 match kings. Seated .005 from the lands. Muzzle velocity is an average of 2725. Didnt get pressure signs until 46 gr at 2850 fps but accracy was starting to suffer. Drop charts are made up from JBM software. Muzzle brake puts it down to feel like a .223 bolt gun. Very little recoil.

Several factors drove me away from the .338. i live in texas but in the city so there are little or no places i can shoot beyond 500 yards. It is unpractical for me to have a 2,000 yard rifle within the area i live in. Another factor is the cost of the .338 round. i can reload a premium .308 for 45 cents per round. The .338 would cost about $4 per round to reload. Also, this was my first long range rifle. My next will be a custom surgeon 300 win mag.

Thanks for the reply and the information. I want to get a Savage one of these days; their "Accu-trigger" system is quite good. I ended up getting a Winchester Model 70 in .308, to go along with my Springfield M1903A3 as my other bolt rifle. The Model 70 will be my deer rifle. Far as LR rifle is concerned, I am still working on shorter ranges; I am nowhere near proficient enough to go out 1000 yards. I am learning to reload, though, which will increase my accuracy, I hope.

I would have to assume so! So far I am able to range my targets out to 1800+ yards with my Leica. I have not applied myself to the mil dot system. I know quite a bit of long range shooters & they all are on the MOA system shooting out to 2000+ yards. So far none of them have offered any positive feedback when questioned about the MILDOT system. The guys who I know or stumble across using the mil dot system have no idea of how it works as they cannot answer any questions.

Mildots are really an amazing concept, because you can actually use them to rangefind by guessing the height of your target and doing a simple equation. It's easier when the target is a man, because the average man is 1.7 meters tall, so you would just throw that number in the equation along with how tall they are in mils from your perspective then you get a range. I'ts more difficult when it's an animal or a vehicle or something.

Holy crap we have almost an Identical build- the only differences are; I went with the Bell and Carlson medalist a5 with the adjustable cheek rest and butt pad, I used a badger ordnance 20 moa rail and Rem 700 - 26 in barrel - The difference between the savage and rem is almost null lol. I am getting 1/4th moa groups with mine_ Absolutely love it - I chalk that sub moa accuracy up to the load I use though :-D I need the box mag something fierce- Idk if the OAL of my hand loads would fit in one though. What is your experience with Hand Loads in the box mag. How much does that muzzle break help you- I find without one I have trouble spotting for myself- some of the guys at the range swear that you can spot for yourself with the proper muzzle break. load 175 g smk with varget "secret powder weight XD" and random brass. I hope you love yours as much as I love mine Most people do not believe me but at 600 yards I shot a 3 shot group you could cover with a penny. Thankful I had witnesses that day XD Could it be replicated. - Probably not- absolutely no wind- baro was perfect- temp was perfect - barrel was the right temp- I still have the target in my man cave XD

LR9367, have you considered getting a Mil-Dot Master? (No, I don't work for them, in case you are wondering). It takes alot of the guesswork out of using a mil-dot recticle. Being old-school, I like moa also, but the mil-dot system does offer the ability to calculate range on the basis of what is seen in the field of view, without reference to a laser or other rangefinder. Isn't that the reason so many military/tactical LE people use the system?

I don't know what type or caliber gun your playing with but the click idea will not work as it will be a inefficient way to dope your scope. Do these some things that will save you time. 1st - acquire the BC of your bullet you want to shoot. 2nd - take your preferred load or store bought ammo & shoot through a chronograph. 3rd - Run these numbers through G7 ballistic calculator. 4th put the amount of info on a shooting card that can be carried in the field.

Current barrel -stock 1/9 twist Ammunition- Hornady SST 162g Scope- Nightforce NXS 3.5-15 50mm I'm assuming the best upgrade next would be a heavy barrel (if you have any recommendations please let me know) I'm sure 1k yards is doable yes? I enjoyed your vid. How would you compare your rifle to a Rem 700? Just curious.
@boarderx11310 жыл бұрын
My tips would be to just practice with it. And I know if you've been using imperial measurements learning metric can be hard. But the beauty of metric is that everything is measured in increments of 10 so that fits in well with mill dots. as like I said 1 mil at 900 metres is .9 metres or 90cm. Where as .9 yards is 32.4 inches. So you see where the math starts getting more complex.
@lowrider936711 жыл бұрын
I am much more familiar with the MOA concept. I know some guys that all have mil dot stuff but when asked any specifics on why they prefer mil over moa I usually get the dear in the headlight look. So for example 1 moa @ 700yd = 7". What does a mil dot equal at 700?

Well, ask someone in the military or law enforcement/tactical community - those folks will know the system if anyone does. There is a certain fadishness to whatever is "newer and better," but the manufacturers - Leupold, Nightforce, Nikon, Zeiss, etc. - would not make optics in mil-dot or TMR if there wasn't demand for them...someone somewhere is using them. Far as I am concerned, I am agostic on it. Use whatever you prefer and whatever works....

I use a scope that can measure MOA. So if you have an idea of the dimension of a target then its simple division rather than an equation. For exe - If I were to range a full size pickup truck I would go off of the wheel size. Most stock sizes are 15-17". If I measured the wheel with the scope & for example if only half of the wheel would fit in the MOA lines then it would be safe to assume the truck is around 600 yards out.This method is very simple. Whats your equation?
