I purchased one of these rifles for my kid. Chambered in 6.5 CM, this is one of THE most accurate rifles ive shot. A lot of the issues stated in the video, are kind of goofy at best. To the experienced shooters out there, dont let this video push you off one of these rifles. They are sweet little shooters, and have lots of bells and whistles for the price. They market the rifle as "supressor ready" and send you a muzzle break instead of capping it, after a propper break in the feeding issues that mine had, have resolved themselves (as most issues with new guns do), and both myself and my kid put 3/4 moa groups at 100 on paper repeatedly. I normally dont comment, but after watching this dude gutshoot a bear at 500 yds with a 6.5 CM, and then give a goofy review of a really nice rifle (for the price $519), I had to say something. Not to sure i will be viewing this channel for anything other than laughs at this point.

Clarifications: (1) We mentioned cycling issues and then later in the video it shows proper functioning. As we said in the video, it OFTEN struggled to feed/eject, but not every time. In the video, we show both the problems cycling and the successful cycles so you have an accurate picture. After deep cleaning and breaking in, it did seem to improve after this review was complete. (2) In the accuracy portion, we mentioned it shot a .943 and we still said it wasn't very accurate. The reason is that we shot MANY MANY groups and only one of them impressed, so the consistency was the problem. In the end, though, we can only test the gun in front of us. You may get a Savage 110 that you LOVE, shoots tight groups, and cycles perfectly. We have NO INCENTIVE to praise or criticize any gun. We aren't sponsored by anyone and just call it like we see it. You're welcome to disagree.

From your video, your example 110 has a defective ejector. I own five Savage 10 or 110 models and none of them have balky extraction. My least accurate example is a 338 Winchester Magnum, and even it will shoot about 1.25 MOA. If yours won't shoot, the barrel likely has an issue. Savage barrels were great in the recent past, but from what I've heard that standard has slipped in recent years. All my rifles are blind magazine configuration, as I don't like removable magazines on bolt guns. I've restocked them all, and it's critical to fit the magazine height properly or feeding won't be reliable. I suspect your removable magazine test rifle has fit issues causing the crappy feeding. Easily corrected in a blind magazine well, not so much with a detachable box.

Did you establish copper equilibrium before assessing its accuracy? If you did not, or you don't know what that is, your "review" has no value. Did you ask the manufacturer what's the ideal ammo to use? This also matters, but not as much as establishing copper equilibrium. 😮

I picked up the 110 switchback in 300 win mag a couple months ago. I was rather impressed with mine for a $520 rifle. I had 1 cycling issue during the initial break in but after a good cleaning I sent another 20 rounds of off the shelf federal soft point 180 grain and achieved 1.5" moa at 100 yards. Once again cleaned and sent another box of the same ammo down with a little tighter group. Im 100% confident in mine to take into the back country. Sorry your experience with the 6.5cm was not the same as my 300wm.

This is my first Savage first time shooting it today. My opinion. After twenty rounds No recoil About the cycling its almost didn't cycle just like you said. But after 15 rounds it cycle great. About the muzzle break it did its job really good No muzzle blast kicking up dirt in this case I went out and shot in a snow storm. (I got wet) from the snow Due to ammo shortage I had a friend give a box of brass of twenty round. I even borrowed his reloading dies. Reloaded twenty round I am happy with the purchase of this rifle.

I bought a Savage 110 Switchback in 6.5 PRC at Sportsmans WH, saw this review afterward and found most all ofthe same problems as were detailed in the Backfire review. I solved the problems with: 1st, smooth the very sharp edges on the inside of the magazine feed lips with a tiny flat blade jewelers file, 2nd smooth the inside of the half moon shape lip on the front of the magazine with a half-round jewelers file, 3rd generously oil the bolt galley and the bolt and work it like a trained monkey til it runs smoothly. Mine now smoothly feeds the dummy rounds that I created. This process took all of 15 or 20 minutes. I may have to smooth the feed ramp later, but for now it feed smoothly. I recently bought a Ruger American in 308 from Sportsmans WH, and it needed a similar clean-up with the jewelers file set as it had a ton of razor sharp edges (lacked any idea of radiusing) in the bolt gallery that impeded smooth bolt travel. Apparently the lower end rifles leaving the factorys are not getting any QA (radiusing and smoothing) before they are shipped.

Owned mine for about a year. I use it as a hunting rifle, still in 6.5 creedmoor. I've had some ejection issues, but nothing with feeding or extraction. It sits in the safe most of the time, but when I do break it out it works just fine. I think the money went into making it feel proper and dependable. Sure it's not the best at anything specific, but even 1.2 MOA is good in my book. Still only 4 inches at 300 yards. I'd consider it a good appalachia hunting rifle. The mass is good and inspires confidence and the trigger is great. The accuracy issues aren't too bad with under 300 yards, usually about 100. Honestly, the Switchback should be considered a heavy hunting rifle. That's about it.

Great, concise video, as always! A few points: 1) With the Failure to Feed, have you examined the feed ramp for burrs that are catching the bullets? Have you fed a bullet then extracted to look for scratches? 2) Regarding the Muzzlebrake, can it be adjusted or "tuned" like the RAS system? 3) I'm making another request for you to try a barrel tuner, such as Limbsaver and other plastic ones for less tha $30 to even the more expensive muzzle brake types, on your poorer performing rifles. 4) Also, I'm still interested in that Mossberg Patriot update video you teased some time ago. 5) More videos of long range pistol shooting? Elmer Keith, noted father of the 357 and 44 Magnums, was known to make 300+ yard kills with a 44 magnum revolver.

I think there is something with the Mag design and the angles in the short action variant. I see a lot of complaints about weak extractors and feed reliability - Kit Badger mentioned it in his review of the 110 Tactical in 6.5CM that was using AI style mags from PMag so it isn't isolated to the proprietary Savage mags. Leads me to conclude the issue comes from the approach angle needed on some cartridge designs when they shorten the action. I haven't heard of the feed issue on the long action models just weak extractor complaints. This is one of the reasons I picked the Weatherby Vanguard TR over the 110 and more specifically the internal/traditional mag option. Slower to reload, but the mag is a part of the action at that point and it helps keep things smooth and the extractor has been solid. Plus, there are several options where I can swap the bottom metal and run AI pattern mags if I really want to. I think barrel break in on over the counter guns is more important than people realize. I was skeptical, but on my new rifle i watched it on my first trip to the range. The same ammo would open up from about one minute to over two and drop right back down after cleaning time and time again. There wasn't enough time between strings for it to have been strictly heat. A clean barrel with decent hunting loads and the groups were all sub-MOA but i can tell it isn't full broken in yet because they are still loosening up too quick from fouling. I have better than 80 rounds through it, and I can tell I am going to need some more work to really get it settled in. The groups are solid on a cold bore and single string , which is fine for now, but i expect it to tighten up some more and I am expecting the fouled performance to improve after another 60 rounds or so. Just run the cheap stuff for the break in, you're just trying to get the copper running through the barrel on bare steel to smooth out the bore. Don't waste the nice handloads or match ammo until that cheap load settles down. Once it does, you'll see the groups shrink up from the good ammo and you'll be able to see the changes from fine tuning your handloads.

Matt Herring thank you, I do have a long action so I guess good thing I went with that. I also did a barrel break of about 30 rounds. I have shot total about 140 or so rounds when I don’t mess it up I have shot multiple .5 moa at 100 and 200 yards. I do wish my high country was a little lighter for the elk hunting I bought it for but have to admit the medium contoured fluted barrel keeps groups tighter longer than most of these lighter guns.

At 1:47 and 1:59 the bolt moves foward on its own, just as it is released. I don't know what stops the bullet in the first place, but apparently relieving pressure on the bolt is all that is needed for it to chamber. I noticed on my switchback that at the top of its lift the bolt will not push in until one allows it to drop just a smidgen, as well. FYI.

So I have the 110 in .308 win and noticed the feed problems like you guys did. Pulling the bolt to the rear made me thing that the housing was entirely too small for the bolt. I didn't have as much of an issue if I put some high quality gun oil on the housing (just enough to keep it happy). I also put some oil right at the spot on the bolt where the head rotates during lock in. No problems with feeding since. The Win 308 doesn't seem to have as much drift and I can hit 300 yard targets within moa without any issues (granted that's only 300 yards).

After owning an axis in .308 putting a Boyd’s stock on it, trigger work, pillars and bedding the action... it still doesn’t shoot great, or even good by my standards. Really soured me on the savage name. However I got a Bergara B-14 ridge and I’m blown away with what I got for the money, especially right out of the box 2.5lb crisp trigger, pretty nice synthetic stock, much better bolt and action, better barrel by far and threaded muzzle at that.

The feeding/extracting problems are why Meateater Steven Rinella had a falling out with Savage years ago when they were sponsoring him. The gun screwed up a couple hunts. I see he now is sponsored by Weatherby and has a new 307 Meateater edition which looks sweet. Please review their 307. I really like the features of the Savage 110 High Country, but have to pass due to the clunky bolt and its issues. I’ll probably get a Bergara Wilderness model. Unless something new comes out at Shot 2024 I like better.

The rounds hanging up halfway into the chamber may be caused by the case head getting caught on the bottom of the extractor. I had the same issue on a CZ push-feed, and adding a bevel on the underside of the extractor solved the issue. The round is now free to slide over the edge of the extractor and in front of the bolt.

I'm not sure if you already bought a rifle for your trip but I wouldn't overlook the CVA Cascade bolt action. Has a lot of higher end features at a budget price and has a Bergara barrel, as it is a sister company under BPI Outdoors. BPI's customer service isn't that great, but the rifle feels well made.

I forgot to answer the second part of your question. Traditionally Savage used the numbers to indicate action size. For example, I have a model 11 Trophy Hunter, which is a 243 and another one in 6.5 Creedmoor. If I had a 270 or 30-06 it would be a model 111 Trophy Hunter. Same applies to the 16/116...just short/long action, respectively. The 16 is the one with the stainless (or stainless color) barrel. However, it seems like Savage is now using the 110 name for everything, regardless of caliber...so a 308, which would have been a 10 is now a 110.

I bought this rifle before I seen this video. Unlike the two men in this video I found it hard to read up on this rifle to see what people are saying about it, even the Savage Arms sight does not list it, at the time I am writing this comment. But I have seen on the internet that Savage 10/110 tend to have sticky bolts and round pick up and ejection issues, but unlike this video shares I have heard model 10/110 tend to be somewhat accurate. Why this model 10/110 failed to do so is a mystery to me. I must say that in order to get tight groups fundamentals such as breaking my cheek weld between shots were helpful I have come to realize that the video was most likely speed up so I have edited out how I thought the shots taken with the Switchback was hurried, however I do feel not breaking the cheek weld may have produced better groups. Well I'm sure that this Sportsman's Warehouse exclusive is non refundable, so I'm going to have to hope the accuracy of my rifle does exceptionally better then the rifle in this video did. Im no expert so I won't find the Savage 10/110 issues like the sticky bolt and failure to pick up rounds and extract too much of a problem as I don't see my targets running away from me, but I may run into problems in the future should I ever compete, as time qualifications will most likely be part of the competition, or if I decide to try it out for hunting applications, that is of course is if my gun has a sticky bolt and failures to pick up and extract as the rifle did in this video or as the reputation that Savage model 10/110's have for exhibiting those issues. I did notice in this video that the magazine was being loaded straight through the lips of the magazine.I felt this would loosen the magazine so I always loaded rounds through the wide open front and slid them back into position, never spreading the magazine lips out, possibly making them loose and causing pick up and extraction issues. But for now I just need it to hit it's target and group well. I've been advised to immediately switch Stocks, but I'm going to give this stock a fair shake before I go spending hundreds on a Magpul or a McMillan, given the Switchbacks overly flexible stock as the rifle in this video exhibited, actually the edges on the forend of my Switchback stock were not coming into contact with the barrel anywhere, as I conducted the well known dollar bill test. I found that I could run a dollar bill through it, holding onto only one side of the dollar bill. But over a long time, if not sooner. Im almost certain I may need to get a McMillan or something. I do have to ask myself what intelligent reason Savage Arms would put their great reputation on the line by making a rifle with a flimsy synthetic stock chamber available in powerful, highly toughted 6.5 PRC's as well as super powerful 300 PRC's with heavy barrels no less, as under fire the recoil will most likely cause the flimsy stock to come into contact with the heavy barreld powerful calibur, as these two guys have clearly pointed out. As far as the muzzle brake not doing much there is a video of a young boy hitting with a Switchback in 6.5 Creedmoor be it the calibur or the muzzle brake or both the little boy does not seem bothered by the kick of the 6.5 Creedmoor. In any case the defense rests. Thanks for the video guys, now I know what to look for.

You dont want one of those. IF going cheap get a Ruger American or a Howa. Both the Ruger and the Howa are made better when comes to how the stock mates to that action. I bet with some time, some of the Mossbergs with heavier recoil calibers 308ish and above, the stocks with fail. When they came out with the Patriot with wood stock, it was definitely pleasing to the eye, but the guts suck, and that is why I will not consider them unless maybe in a chassis system stock, but Id have to see it first. So i have found that the Savage quality control sucks. I bought a 10fcp in 6.5. awhile ago, It drives tacks. But I had to change out the extractor spring, ball, and claw, pretty easy to do but a disappointment for sure. It has the accu stock and I like it. The bolt could run smoother, the black paint drags. It is one of my most accurate rifles, I am glad I didnt sell it, but cmon Savage, get the QC going. That was a spot on review. Best ammo mine shoots is hand loaded 127 LRX and 140 SST. These are deadly accurate in that rifle. But for the average person to buy these rifles and have these problems is a real PIA! I also like the fact that a savage barrel swap is easy if you want to DIY. The triggers can be set lite. Many Savage rifles are tack drivers.

OK, I see that the Switchback has no material in front of the recoil lug. I never seen or heard of this? The University of You Tube has shared many ways to bed this lug, Including not to bed at all. I own this rifle in PRC, and I plan to keep it, and to try and male it work, but I see my work is cut out for me, and I'm sure I am in for more surprises. So the fact that Savage made a rifle with no material forward of the lug, there is probably argument that reward recoil support is all that is needed. Yet some people insist on bedding around under and foward of the lug, that all sounds a bit too much modifying for me.I will shoot my Switchback as it comes out of the box, then make subtle changes when it appears to be the next logical step. But Man! All though I'm going to ring any performance this rifle may have, one thing is certain. I paid too much.

I think the fact that the 6.5 doesn't really need a muzzle break has a lot to do with why it didn't seem to be doing anything.I have the switch back in the 6.5 PRC and I have read somewhere that it kicks like a 270 win without a muzzle. Well I never shot with a muzzle break before, and I tell you, I was surprised that not only did it have less recoil then a 270 it also had less recoil then my 6.5 Creedmoor.that has no barrel threads for a muzzle break. My parralax was broke so I can't tell you what the groups were, but yeah maybe you should have tested the magnum version of the Switchback. I don't have a back up scope except a lil Quick release 9x scope, I believe its a 22 scope any way I believe, but judging by how the recoil of the muzzled Switchback PRC felt I think it can handle it and I may have a 100 yd group to report by the end of the day. I also felt that the decibels of the muzzle break were not as loud as I was expecting. Maybe I was in such awe as to the effects on recoil had on shooting a rifle that I didn't actually concentrate on how loud it was, but in hindsight never haven shot through a muzzle break.I was in awe at just how all around comfortable shooting througj a muzzle break. Nothing bad about it sticks out in my memory. I warned a father his wife and two kids at the range that I was shooting with a muzzle break, but the father told me it wasn't too bad. Maybe he wasn't being truthful but like I said nothing bad about shooting through a muzzle break sticks out in my memory including the decible level. Not suggesting Backfire just had one bad example, of the Switchback, That would be a cop out, and not calling Backfire rifle liars. But my experience shooting through a muzzle break for the first time was great, but I know from experience that it is no fun on the other side of the ear muffs.I have come to realize its probably not such a bad Idea to put your ear protection on before you open your vehicle door at the range. It wasn't like that a couple of years ago.

Making the statement this is a range rifle is absurd. Just because of the bolt? It isn't fair to even make an assessment on the muzzle brake shooting a caliber that really doesn't need it. The magnum calibers are the only one's fair to assess a muzzle brake on. I hunt out of a blind so a rifle like this would be a fine hunting rifle. Also, a range gun would have a heavy barrel and maybe even fluting like the Savage Tactical that can be shot as a range gun, but even that is not a true range gun. The reason is the magazine. Who needs a long cumbersome magazine at the range? They get in the way. However, you do a nice video and give your opinion which may be agreeable with others, but honestly, some of your opinions are far from the truth like calling a Switchback a true range gun.
