My buddies father had a Savage 22 high power. At that time he showed me the box of bullets he had. 19 were fired which accounted for 19 deer. He was a still hunter and very good at it.

My Grandfather had a 22 hipower Savage 99, produced in 1918. Then my Father had it, when I was 12 years old it was apparently legal to hunt elk with it because I did on my first ever hunting trip. I am 55 years old now, my father since passed about 8 years ago. I am proud to say the old girl is now mine, in near mint condition, and shoots like a dream. I have many fire arms, this is still one of my favorites to shoot.

Good story. The Savage 1899 was actually the second iteration of this rifle. The first version was the Savage 1895. The differences are small but the design goes back to the early 1890s. My father had a sporting goods store when we were kids and we would go to the trade show in Chicago every year. There was a gentleman at the Savage booth with a canvas rifle case with a 22 HP takedown. He told the Savage representative that he had bought the rifle from a Basque sheepherder in the northern Rockies. The gentleman had asked the shepherd if the shepherd had ever shot anything big with the rifle, the shepherd said he had killed a grizzly with it, one shot to the head. The bullet had disintegrated, shattering an area of the skull about the size of a half dollar. I was probably 12-14 at the time and I'm 73 now but I remember the story and the rifle.

The model 1899 featured in this post is a take down model, once the forearm is remove turn the barrel a half turn and it will come off the gum also the serial number should be stamped on both the stock and forearm. I have a 1899 in 250-3000 takedown built in 1917 very similar to this rifle. Thank you for showing it.

Great story great rifle, I have the same model take down but 1914, when us kid's were growing up our dad would tell us old hunting stories where he used and old 99 in 22hp up here in Canada just prior to leaving for WW2 1940, then again he used one in at logging camps the 50s....fast forward to 1983, I found one at a gun show, shot out and head spacing long gone but couldnt pass it up, was able to find brass, bullets and dies surprisingly easy back in the 80s, but the barrel was too far gone even with a complete bore scrub and useing a tight cast bullet....alternative was boring the barrel to 25/35 very common procedure for the 22hp I was told ( 22hp/25-35 and 30-30 all use same parent case) so off to an old fella that used to come up to our gun shows, he lived in Montana, he bore, rifled and chambered it to 25-35 Alkey imp. Still have that old rifle and it has taken many deer and at least one elk I remember, shooting a 100 gr hornady sp at 3050 fps and 1in groups at 100, I form cases from 30-30 cases in a series of annealing, sizing down in three stages and then fire form . It has no collector value as it has been altered considerably since new even with a 4 power weaver on it....but it's priceless in our family and will be passed down for the next 117 years no doubt.

I have wanted a vintage Savage 99 for a long time, but never found one. My local pawn shop recently came into three of them, and I purchased two. A 1960's 99F in .243 and an 1899 in .303 Savage. I may go back for the third, if the price comes down to a reasonable point. I probably paid more than they are worth, but I would be kicking myself for years if I let them pass me by.

Enjoyed your video this great gun. I recently acquired a old box of shells that I had never seen. In a bit of research I learned it is a 22 HP and is used in the 1912 Savage model 1899 and designed by a Charles Newton. Its a neat shapped cartidge.. I have 7 fully loaded cartridges, copper jacket with a leaded soft point. Best ballistics I can find is it has a 70 grain bullet, .228 diameter and travels at 2790 FPS. Prety snappy bullet. Due to your video I know what this bullet belongs in. Thank you, Don.

My 99 from 1912 in 22 HP also shoots too high, so I let the rearsight rest directly on the barrel. The ladder is pushed forward. That works. I load with 25 gr. Hodgon BL-C2 for the 71 gr. bullet in .228" giving 2693 f/s. The barrel is NOT bend.

That,s a take down model 99 you can remove that barrell 3/4 turn and put on a new one or get one turned action and trigger look,s fine rebuild the old girl and use it .

Just received the same model and calibre but manufactured in 1909… can’t wait to get out to the range.

I've got an old Winchester 94 that I call Don's gun. I bought it from an old guy who had been an offshore oil worker on the coast, a construction worker, a cowboy on Colorado, and general roustabout just shout everywhere else. The old gun was originally purchased by Don's grandfather some time before world war 1 at a local hardware store in minnesota. He worked as a farmer and guide in that era. He left the gun to Don who took it next to colorado. Originally chambered in 32 40 it was factory rechambered to 32special by Don. The front of the long stock has been whittled with a pocket knife and the initials D.W. are scratched into cheek of the butt stock. The original saddle ring has been removed and the original reddish stain has long since turned to solid dull black under the oil and grime saturation of the many years of service. It still functions like a charm, shoots fairly accurately. There is no telling how many northern whitetail, colorado mule deer, or other game that has been taken with that old gun. And if it could talk......

Got my wife's grandfather's 99 in .300 Savage. Hard to find factory ammo, Federal makes it, but it's out of stock....

The reason the front stock comes off like that is you have the take down model. When you take off the front stock you then the square hole over the square stud on the barrel to get enough leverage to unscrew the barrel . A good gun smith might be able to fix it so it doesn't shoot high

If you want to raise the point of impact, you raise the rear sight. I don't think your barrel is bent.

The Savage 22 High Power was developed from the 25-35 Winchester case necked down.

Grandfather had one in 30-30 with a chip out of the stock(nailed back in place). I always liked the little curve on the forearm, a little extra touch that could have been left off....but was not. Cool a bit of history...nice rifle.

I bought a really beat up 99 Savage older than the one you have there at a flea market. The barrel was cut off(At the receiver ring!) and the lever had been very badly bent from someone trying to form it into a curve. The stock was junk. It was a mess. I found a shot out barrel for almost nothing and put a liner in it. After a lot of work I got it in decent shape and killed a deer with it. It is very accurate, but the guy selling the liners puts a 1-10 twist in the liner, which is better than the 1-12 original twist. It is now my fall turkey rifle.

Fantastic story, I have my Grandfathers 1918 Savage 1899 in 22HP take down he bought new and it shoot's like new, I will be handing it down to my Grandson one day along with my 1908 Winchester 1894 in 32 wsp. that I bought in 1954 at the age of 15 and took many white tail in N. Minn. with it.

That's a wonderful gun. The Barrel twist right off quarter turn. You could straightened it with some patiences..

I imajin someone has said already. Its not hard to straighten a barrel. Savage did it on a shitload of shooters before they left the factory up until not long ago.

Nice video. The bloke who shot the buffalo with that cartridge actually shot around 23 buffalo in a single shoot with lung shots. It was also used for hunting in India and was a successful round for soft skinned game like Tiger

I have a 250-3000 model 99 (250 Savage) made in 1957. The model 99 is a fantastic rifle. Unfortunately, 250 Savage ammo is getting hard to find. The ammo costs about $2.50 per round when you do find it.

Tire Iron, look around and find a period correct tang sight for the old girl. Have a competent gunsmith install it. Then you can sight it in, and the chances are it will shoot just fine. I have the same rifle, in NRA Excellent condition, and it shoots 1 1/2 MOA at 100 yards if I do my part on a calm day. Nice light-recoiling rifle for deer out to 150 yards!

I really don't think the barrel has gone bad. The bullets coming out of the barrel are super fast and will be shooting high, when your aim at 25 and 50 yards, when the rear post is set the lowest setting.. What I recommend you to do 1. get a stable shooting rest and at the same time applying marksmanship skills ( breathing, trigger control etc etc 2. fire three rounds at 100 yrds and try to be precise on every shot.. take your time ( don't let the barrel get too hot ) 3. see where your bullet hits and add just sight. 4.If you shoot at a target at 50 yrds , you'll need to aim at the bottom corner parper target to hit center ( keep sights set as same as 100 yrds) 5. at 50 yards you'll have to aim much lower to hit at center.. Just compensate since the bullets are coming around 2,700 to 3,000 fps compared to a 30-30 bullets coming 1,800 -2,200 fps

Great video sir. I have found a .22 HP Savage in my uncle's house and it is atleast 60+ years old. The lever still functions, the safety lock is lot tight now but there are 38 bullets in a box that I am curious about. Is there any life to the bullets? I am assuming that they are atealst 40+ years old. They do not appear to be oxidized. Is there any expiry date to bullets? Can those old bullets be fired from the gun?

If the drawing of the sight picture is how you actually shot it, your barrel is not bent. Tuck that sight down in the notch and you'll hi closer. Grand ol girl though

I had the same problem with my 454 casull carbine and at the end I ended up replacing the front sight and adding williams target rear sight. now I get 1" groups w/ Hornady FTX bullets @ 100 yards. If your barrel was Bend/damage you would have lots of fouling inside the barrel and would be leaving keyholes on your paper target at 25 yards..

That’s a pretty cool takedown rifle.

It's not that hard to straighten barrel, make up 3 wooden blocks that fit the round contour of barrel, put it in a hydraulic press. Go at it slowly as it will spring back. You can check progress by looking through bore. Barrels often need to be straightened at the factory after boring/rifling.

If the hardware is still safely workable I personally would fit it with a new stock and use it as it was intended. It’s only fitting to honor the rifle and it’s designer.

Actually the Savage 99 action is even older. There was a Savage 1895. Definitely worth restoring.....you want to find someone who specializes in the old Savage. They will have knowledge and probably a nice collection of parts. And I want to emphasize when I say restore I am not suggesting returning it to like new ...... I mean just address issues of function like straightening the barrel. Get that gun out hunting again!

I have a 1902 or 1903 dated 6.5x55 Swedish Mauser that I really like a lot. All matching serial numbers on all the parts. :)

Judging by your sketch, your sight picture is wrong. The front sight should be buried and just visible in the bottom V of the rear sight.

I have the same 22 HP ,When i take the front stock out ,i remove the barrell,and i install a 410 gauge barrell, 1 shot . i will try to find 5.6x52r ammo because the 22hp is noy inproduction anymore.

I'm sure that by now you know that your 99 is a take down model. IF you decide to repair/restore your rifle parts, including wood and barrels are available online IF you are willing to spend the time and money to bring it back to "stock condition". I know a farmer in nearby PA who owns ONLY Savage lever action rifles and uses his .22 HP (he purchased it new) for predator control as I suspect the original owner of your rifle did.

This guy don't even know that when you take off the forestock and open the lever mechanism you give the barrel a quarter turn and it breaks down to 3 pieces.

You didnt line the sights up right when looking down them . By the diagram you drew it will shoot high because you have to put the bead in the bottom of the notch, not the middle. Your barrel is not bent. There is a video showing how to line up ironsights on youtube. Try it .I Know because i just set my irons
