That was GREAT! Like you, I've been a BIG fan of the ol' .250 since the sixties when I acquired my first one after reading Larry Koller's book, "Shots At Whitetails". I've had multiple 99s' and 3 different bolt guns over the years. The one in the gun closet at this time is a Savage Weather Warrior, and it is a real shooter, although heavier than it needs to be. Thanks for doing this great review.

Thanks TOD, How do you like the Weather Warrior, aside from the weight? I've looked at them in the past but never had one.

I just got my 5th 99. A late model 99F in 308 Winchester with the aluminum round counter. Not as desirable for the purists but I like it. My 1952 99EG, 250-3000 with its 24 inch barrel and original K-4 Weaver shoots the Remington factory 100 grain Core-Lokt bullets just fine. Consistently under one inch at a hundred yards. Of course that is off a bench with me taking my time. I've been looking for one of the post 1960 models with the 1/10 twist just to play with the 100+ grain weight bullets. It still won't be a 257 Roberts, but should be fun. I'm having a BOB built on a 1913 Kar. 98 Mauser action right now. The smaller 25's are a lot more fun than the big blasters IMOH. Happy hunting boys and girls!😊

Nice! Just inherited my dad's mint 99 in .250-3000 and all his reloading gear. He took many, many deer and ground hogs with it back in the woods in PA when he was a teenager in the mid-50s. Looking forward to getting it up and running! Now the hunt for brass. I only have about 100 cases for it.

For bullets, keep your eyes peeled for Speer 87gr Hot Cores. They consistently shoot very well in 1-14" twist 250-3000's, and are good for hunting as well.

David, I'm sure you'll enjoy it! Out here we have prairie dogs and they are a blast to go after with the old 250. Good luck with the search for brass. It's even difficult to find brass on the internet for that one. Side note, I just found 4 boxes of 100 grain silvertips in the garage from the early 2000's that I'd lost and forgotten about. That's like finding a 400.00 dollar bill. haha

You can use 22_250 brass just expand the neck neck it back to 25 that's what they did to make the 22-250 it's a necked down 250-300 savage Case and if you have any 300 savage that's the parent case they necked it down to.257 dia.

I tell ya that .250-3000 is an awesome deer cartridge. I reload for it and came up with a good load for it. The accuracy is very good and the meat damage is minimal. I fixed one up for my daughter in-law and she is a deer slayer with it. It's pretty with purple accents and shortened up for her.

Got a Model 99G take down and a 99EG in 250-3000. I hand load a 100 gr Remington core lokt component bullets. They give me the best accuracy from the 1in14 twist. It can shoot them 3000 fps, with 35 grains of Hodgdon 4895

Thanks for the info TWP61. Ha! That sounds perfect, I had not of the core lokt bullet. Great! Also, just out of curiosity, is your EG more accurate than the TD? I like the takedowns but it seems like my fixed barrel is consistently more accurate than the take down. Have a good one, Thanks for watching!

I just have to comment : The Savage 99 is a fantastic rifle. The 250 Savage is a fantastic cartridge for deer and varmints regardless of the type of rifle it is chambered in. The 99 and 250 Savage Together is super fantastic. Sad that younger folks will not experience it.

Yes, the 280 Ross was introduced around 1907, carried a muzzle velocity of 2900-3000 fps with a 140gr bullet. There are reports of a 120gr or 130gr achieving MV over 3100fps. Although the 250-3000 is a great cartridge, and very fast, it is not nearly the fastest for pre WWI cartridges. Great video though. Looking forward for more videos.

Great guns and caliber. I have two 250 sav. One a bolt sav 111 and a ruger #1. I've take mule deer with both +/- 300 yards. I think the 115-120 gr. bullets offer a distinct advantage over the 243. Handloading is required and it's easy to push a 115 gr. pill at 2700 in a strong action. Sav. 99's should be kept at the appropriate pressure levels. Nice video.

The 250 savage and the 257 roberts are amazing deer hunting cartridges. They should have stayed more popular but unfortunately didn’t. The 243 is very comparable.

Thanks for the video. Just got a 99 I BELIEVE is post 62 and has a 1:10 twist and can't wait to put a scope on it and see if it's at least relatively consistent because I love the cartridge. I had it in a Savage Model 1920 and it was shooting 6ft groups at 200. Not ideal. So I have big hopes for the 1:10 twist. I don't think your second shot with the original barrel 99 hit the target. Pretty cool to see it being dinged at 400 with both rifles though

If I'm not mistaken, the 280 Ross cartridge was introduced a few years prior to the 250-3000. And I believe it was faster. Please correct me if I'm wrong...

R.r, I did my homework and you are 100% correct. To be honest I'm a bit floored. For as long as I can remember, I have always been told and read that the 250 3000 was the first. Maybe the 280 Ross doesn't count because it' Canadian. HaHa! I need to study on it some more but it sounds like it was a pretty great cartridge design but poor bullet technology of the time and an even worse rifle gave it a pretty bad name. Sounds like a pretty cool cartridge though, I'm deffinetly going to learn more about it. Thanks Rr

2700 - 2900 FPS is the sweet spot load of a cartridge. Anything more is barrel burning pointless. While anything less implies a second tier cartrdge , the 2400 - 2700 FPS range. Third tier is the 2000 - 2400 FPS range. Anything less than that, unless it's flinging a chunk of lead .357 or larger or a shotgun slug, is usually not sufficient for big game.

Thanks for the comment Michael! I have to agree with you for the most part, especially target rifles and short actions. I have to say though, I really enjoy the 7 Rem Mag with 150 gr bullet. I think it's moving at about 3100. That thing's pretty flat out to 400. The thing is I don't think I would ever shoot it enough to burn the barrel out. I get your main point though and agree. Have a good one Michael, Thanks for watching!

@@leverbolt7699 You'd be surprised at the increase in performance of the 7 RM using 160 - 175 grain bullets loaded in the sweetspot 2700 - 2900 FPS range. Yeah, pushing a 7mm 3000+ FPS and above will burn out a barrel quickly if you regularly shoot your rifle. 7 STW is notorious for it. Even with Krieger and Lothar Walther barrels.

If you call those good groups, I'd hate to see what you call bad groups. I know that the Savage rifles are capable of 1/2 MOA. I have a 1966 99e in 308 that is 1/4 MOA. I have a 243 in a Savage model 99, and I have not shot it for a while. I think it was a 1/2 MOA rifle. Your groups are still good enough for hunting, even though you might have to track a wounded animal.
