I’m a Tech at a Chevy dealer in Florida, and I have to say we rarely have any problems with the 2.0L. The 1.5L on the other hand is terrible, have seen quite a few of them with cracked pistons due to detonation. They’re right, avoid it like the plague. The 9 speed is a gamble though, hasn’t been in production long enough to see issues. Just make sure if you have one you change the fluid often, like every 50,000mi.

pontiacGXPfan They’ve actually grown on me a bit after driving cars with the 2.0L. The power delivery is fun and the gas mileage is great. With that being said you will spend all the money you saved on gas when you need to replace the turbo at 100,000mi. Also, I don’t care what any engineer tells you, a forced induction engine will never last as long as naturally aspirated. Especially if you follow Chevys “oil life monitor!”

The reason they have a 38k MSRP and offer 10k off, rather than pricing it at 28k, is just to get financing approved. If you come to the dealership with a trade in that is 8k underwater and shit credit, no bank is gonna let you roll that into a 36k total loan with only a 28k depreciating asset behind it. The Loan to Value ratio is way to high. But need a 36k loan with "38k" asset behind it... You're Approved! 👍

After your final remarks, I just had to add this comment in opposition: We had our 2013 Equinox LTZ fully equipped model for right on 6 years and 72,000 miles, and in all that time, I replaced a set of tires at 60,000 miles, and a battery right at 5 years. Those were the *only* things that went wrong with that vehicle (no brake job (and the brakes were still OK when we sold to a dealer), no headlamps out, no interior lights or controls issues, etc. etc. It was without question the *most reliable* vehicle we have ever owned (prior was 2000 high-end Honda Odyssey, that had *many* issues...). We likely would have traded for the 2020 model Equinox if we had not moved to the EV side, with the Nissan Leaf, and then added the Tesla Model Y when I did a KBB sale of the Equinox to a local Ford dealer. In fact, the KBB listed price was $10,850, and the dealer thought our Equinox was in such good shape that he offered $11,000 on the spot. Just sayin'... :-)

I burst out laughing the first time I saw that. The only thing more crooked than J.D. Power is AMCI Testing, which is basically an organization that does car commercials for order, disguised as "testing".

Personal preferences...my wife and I bought a new 2018, 1.5l, 6 spd auto, FWD and have zero issues with it. I have not driven the 2.0 but honestly, I don't see why the performance of the 1.5 is discounted...it runs on regular fuel, gets better mileage and honestly, has more than enough performance to outrun most traffic up to 80 mph...and why would you need to drive beyond that on a regular basis in California? We like it a lot. We paid out the door with the outrageous California taxes and license fees 24k.

Im leasing a 2020 equinox, I believe the base trim level but its just with AWD, and I must say I am extremely impressed with chevy on this vehicle, really made me question all the hate GM has gotten through the years. I have minimal complaints about this SUV, for me I found it super comfortable, more comfortable than 90% of the competition out there, more comfortable than toyotas IMO. Infotainment works perfectly for me, I havent had a sun glare issue like the one that is mentioned in this video and its been super sunny lately where I live. The sound quality to me doesnt sound bad at all but then again I never tested the competitions sound systems. To me I hear the sound loud and clear, I dont hear any distortion so who knows. Otherwise, I love my equinox, the interior has an awesome style to it but its also not overstyled which I love. Its extremely quiet and comfortable inside etc. Also it has great gas mileage. Now my only true complaints with the equinox is that, 1) the 1.5L turbo engine feels very weak and anemic, makes merging on the highway difficult at times, also the engine stop/start feature is very annoying. Otherwise its only one complaint because you have the option of getting the stronger 2L turbo engine. Other than that though, this SUV drives very nice and smooth, transmission works good and is pretty consistent too. Good job GM for finally making something great and able to compete with other manufacturers.

As the owner of a 2011 chevy equinox LT1 with the 2.4 GDI I really appreciate the review. I really like the 2011 model in terms of comfort, cargo space and utility. When I bought the car it was less than 3 yrs old with 26k km or 16k miles. I bought the car for $20k Canadian. 2 months ago I replaced the timing chain and cooler lines. I do my own repairs so that was like $400 Can in parts, other than doing the brakes once and tires, That's all i have spent. The car has 150k km and I should be able to drive it for a couple more years. The sound system in it is pretty good, it's the pioneer system with a subwoofer. I tend to buy GM vehichles used due to the depreciation and I don't mind working on them. All cars break down at some point.

I rented a 2022 LT AWD model from enterprise for 3 days for a roadtrip and added almost 500 miles. Honestly was pretty impressed and this is even with the 1.5 liter turbo. It's slow, but it was perfectly acceptable. Everything worked really well. I was particularly impressed by the AWD and snow performance. The stock tires are damn good in the snow. I was getting over 50mph driving on fully snowed out roads (all white everything)....yes I'm a little crazy. Like SavageGeese, I'm generally not a fan of GM mass market products, but I could totally live with this one. Seems like a solid car!

All four had gaps and misaligned panels. Issues with engines and transmissions. Even faulty computer programming on the last one with no repair possible. That was it for me. No help ever from GM or the dealership. I tried very hard to stay loyal. Watching the sloppy adhesive on the bottom of the Equinox brings back "happy " memories for me. I do not believe that this car company has really changed . Is it the company's philosophy that lacks or the zero bride in the making of these cars ?

It's a planned obsolescence thing. Most of the Amstican car brands do not build their vehicles to last, they make them so you will have to buy another once you are done with your current one. Japanese brands, or even Hyundai(which is Korean) all bud their cars to last practically forever if you take care of them. The European brands even do pretty good with their building for the future...even if they do have their issues. Nothing last forever, but you shouldn't have to put more money and work into maintaining your car than you have to.

Glad to see you somewhat approve of a now 3 year old model. The 2021 refresh was supposed to launch in August, but as every plant is currently down in NA, I'm sure that will be pushed back. We started building this generation MY18 in January of 2017 here in Canada. We were the sole producer of the 2 previous generations and worked 8 years of mandatory OT because they were so popular. GM now builds this model at a plant in Mexico as well. I'm genuinely surprised how you much you hate them, as any feedback I have personally have, has been positive. I do agree with your statement that the 2 previous gens lacked decent corrosion protection. For this generation they put in automation in our plant to apply the underbody "sealer". This particular model may have been produced in Mexico? as I can see that it has been brushed on. Anyway, I was excited to see this review of a product I have put my blood sweat and tears into for 15 years, and glad to see it passed the "cookie cutter" test. BTW is Jack your brother? You guys looks and sound identical. Keep up the good work! Sincerely, an unemployed Assembly worker.

I bought a 2019 Equinox LT in May, 2021 and it's been fine to date. I found the driver's seat to be extremely comfortable. You are surely right about the radio though. Personally, I find it to feel bulky when turning tighter corners and don't really need all the space. We rarely have anyone in the back seat. I will be looking into something smaller next year if used car prices ever come down.

He is 340lbs and says “My fat ass fits in it and it gets me to and from work”. He also moved all of his worldly possessions in it from Florida to Texas when he finished college. It’s a reasonably priced, practical, and comfortable vehicle. To non car people that’s all they are looking for and that’s why these sell like hot cakes.

I worked at Hertz RAC from 2011-2016. The equinox was my go to SUV if I needed a rental for 2 reasons, they always had sirius/XM and the front seats were insanely comfortable for a fat and tall guy like me. They had tons of thigh support and were just firm enough. The one thing that made this SUV better then most, for me at least, was taken away. I ended up renting one of these new Equinoxes in LAX over 2019 holidays. The front seats in these were so bad, the seats are too short and the bolsters are too close like Jack said at 2:31.

I would take this over the buzzy, clunky RAV4. We went with a new RAV4 and it was a turd. Not sure why so much emphasis on corrosion of the underbody... Toyota trucks and SUV's are so notorious for rust rot that they were sued for knowingly selling vehicles with frames they knew were rotting out and were caught denying replacement frames for vehicles that were dangerously corroded. Those plastic underbody panels on some vehicles are no guaranteed against rust.

I have 3 fully loaded 2017s (2 Equinoxs and 1 GMC Terrain which is its twin) They all are fully loaded with AWD and V6. I absolutely love them. The old design is safer (look up the crash test ratings) and the V6 performs 100% better and gets almost the same fuel economy on paper. The pioneer audio system sounds great. The 2018 and up equinox driver and passenger front seats are absolutely horrible. The old 2017 and down had extremely comfortable interiors and seats. The rear sliding seat made sure there was a ton of room for rear seat passengers as well. The sides of the new truck front seat backrests dig into the sides of your back at your lower shoulder-blades and the seat pan is small. Unless you are 150lbs and 5 foot 8. The seats of this new Equinox are what will keep me from buying another Equinox or Terrain. Even the smaller Chevy Trax/Buick Encore has more comfortable front seats. If you don't order the truck with the factory tow package adding a hitch to the new equinox is much harder and will require drilling through the rear bumper and installing a filler piece to cover the hole. The rest of the new equinox is OK, but the prices are just whack , like they said in this video. The new design looks good, especially the redline, but you can't order a sunroof in the redline which makes absolutely no sense.

I think they price them high and give big discounts for several reasons: 1. Make you feel like you got a great deal. 2. Help justify the insanely high repair costs/parts costs because they can say "well the price to repair it is a very small percentage of the value of the vehicle". 3. The high price helps them keep some brand value. 4. They charge a ton of money for each added option across the line which increases the MSRP of every vehicle they sell and makes for easier up-selling for the salespeople. The list goes on for why they would prefer to keep a higher MSRP and just give massive discounts.

I see brand new Toyotas and Hondas with blown engines, and I see 300,000 mile 2017 Cruzes with no significant issues. The 2.0 GM engine is excellent. The 1.5 is average. The chevy equinox is still the car that scared the shit out of me when i drove it through the carwash and the roof dented from the pressure of the dryer. Luckily it bent back.

I am in the field service business and this is the car my company provides. It is certainly not the car I would choose, but it's a free car so... We usually keep them for 80,000 to 1000,000 miles (2-4 years depending on area), some geographic areas are a lot bigger than others (rural vs city). I have to say for the most part I rarely hear of any serious issues, most seem to run fine for at least that long. And these are primarily the 1.5T 6 spd base FWD models, only in certain mountainous areas do they allow AWD. When they are at the end of service life we have the option to buy them at wholesale price, and some do. A few folks have done this and as far as I know did not have issues after an additional 50K miles. In fact the Consumer Reports data seems to back this up with most years getting well above average reliability rating so... I personally would not buy one, of course I drive mine pretty hard and follow the manufacturers service interval (7k oil changes). If it were my car and planned to keep it long term I would basically cut the maintenance schedule in half unless you do a lot of highway miles and tend to drive it easy. Bottom line it's an okay car, not the best, but far from the worst. If you just want basic transportation, utility, and can get one at a good price, it's not a bad deal and you could do a lot worse.

I’m from Australia and I have the 2.0 AWD LTZ-V (US Premier equivalent) with Sunroof and BOSE system and 5 Years Unlimited Km warranty. It’s a great crossover to drive. Plenty of power, a lot of tech that I love like, BOSE sound system is A1, Lane keep assist, AEB , blind spot monitoring, the LED headlights and LED interior lights are bright and crisp, electric tailgate, powered/ cooled/heated seats. The only visit to my dealer are for the 1000km and 1 year servicing. Great family car , it is fastest in its class. One of the most reliable that I have owned.

I have the sister model 2022 terrain 1.5 4cylinder 9 speed.....love it. Stylish, has all the tech I need....and yes I read about the catastrophic previous generation. GM is a lose cannon when it comes to cars. Right now I'm happy, and I do change the oil every 7000 synthetic, plus trans fluid every 50k. If I can get 200,000 out of mine, with original engine...it was worth it.

I'm with you guys. Every time one of these rolls into the shop, I cringe. It is just astounding to me how lacking they are in build quality/materials, yet people still buy the crap out of these. Not a single customer I've spoken to is all that happy with these cars, given their track record...but somehow quite a few of these customers keep buying them when the previous one is no longer economically feasible to repair.
