The savannah monitor (Varanus exanthematicus) is one of the coolest animals on planet Earth, but does that make it a good pet? Clint examines the savannah monitor to determine if it is a good pet reptile for most reptiles keepers.

WOW, his nails are beautifully trimmed and STILL cause some damage! Please please PLEASE do a video like this for Iguanas!!! I talked a woman out of buying an iguana for her first pet last week, come to find out it was for her 8 year old daughter! I sold her a bearded dragon instead, and I think they'll be much happier with that as a family pet.

Yikes! Yeah an iguana is not a good first time reptile, especially for a kid! I'm glad you talked her into a beardie instead; they are much easier and friendlier pets, especially for people new to reptiles. Hopefully they bought all the right equipment like UVB bulbs and calcium supplements. I've seen a very sick and improperly cared for beardie with metabolic bone disease, and it was heartbreaking.

I saw a lil baby savannah monitor at a pet store today, it being so cute I put it on my list of reptiles I'd consider getting down the line. But I'm SO glad I came across this video to really know what they're like, and to learn they're DEFINITELY not for me (while I do love puppy-sized lizards). So glad to see clear and factual information from a source that actually cares :^)

Guess I got lucky. My Savannah was so sweet and tame that I feel we truly loved eachother. 22 years later and I still love my Mikey. He passed away from Bronchitis. I could fall asleep and he'd just lay on my chest till I woke up. One thing he didn't talk much about is just how smart Savannahs are. I was the reptile specialist at a pet store for 2 years and I've seen all manner of reptiles... But to this day I've only seen one reptile that would "play" and that's Savannahs. I've seen Savannahs make see saws out of wood there they continuously went from one side to the other and seemed to enjoy the feeling of going up and down. Call me crazy...but it happenned so often that Is swear it was "playing"

I think this is a great start to a 'before you buy' series on popular reptiles that aren't easy to keep, like savannahs and iguanas! Pet stores really need to stop carrying reptiles they can't care for themselves, but I think it's more careless to be selling baby animals that grow up to be huge. I think if you sell giant lizards in your pet store, you need to show the casual customer what they turn into and the enclosure it takes to keep one. Of course, they'd make less sales that way...

Absolutely love this video. Wish it came with every half assed care sheet pet stores hand off for these guys. Wouldn't give mine up for the world, but they (as many other monitors) are not what most people tend to expect with a reptile. All my monitors have rooms, Colonies of food and deep substrate. I gotta tell ya, the cost of the correct substrate as well as the cost of all the larger roach species (well over 1000$ for 8 species of medium and large roaches alone) in the past few months from private breeders, cheaper that way) for food SEVERELY outweighed the cost of converting a bedroom, vet checkups, and continuous electricity for lighting plus the lighting itself altogether. Almost all of my monitors, and my Argentine tegu, are adoptees/rescues from people. People who had them in a breeder (40g) tank when they were at least 2 feet long, or loving families who just couldn't take care of them anymore due to either health or housing problems (how I got my Savannahs and my tegu). They were incredibly aggressive, mean, and dangerous animals. But you give them the space they deserve, and the respect they absolutely deserve- they come around so fast it's amazing. My Nile monitor, I got him from someone who said he does nothing but bite and escape. He has the largest room in my enclosure, and does have his days where he doesn't really want to deal with me, but he immediately lost his aggression- he grew curious of me rather than fearful of me. You work on their terms, you give them respect, and in return they give you coexistence. Not a lovely dovey animal, definitely dangerous animals if your not aware of how to interact with them, but incredibly intelligent and absolutely amazing to live with and I love them more than anything in the world. Ps. Your also correct, my arms are always scratched to hell. I do have leather handling gloves and cut proof sleeves from work (I work with razor sharp sheet metal, but every cut on me is from one of my animals) but I'm either too lazy or too forgetful to ever put them on. Lucky me I have a high pain tolerance, and but man they make you bleed a LOT.

I had one of these, impulse rescue buy from a store as she had infected feet that weren’t being treated. No idea how to keep them really (this was almost 50 years ago) She was a little smaller than this one but still pretty big. Temperament wise I got really lucky, though she only bonded to me and would hiss and threaten to tail whip visitors if she felt like it. Never hurt me in any way. She would lie across the back of the sofa behind me, her only sin was stealing fried eggs off my plate if I was eating 😄 I could hold her and she would go to sleep. She once bit the vet that was treating her feet…somehow grabbed her finger at the first joint and refused to let go. She finally did, poor vet went to ER! She was wild caught I’m sure. Passed away after only a year or two, feet never really properly healed and I think she had the fatty liver too. I wish I had her now, with knowledge we have. She was so intelligent and affectionate with me. I had half a room for her enclosure but she had run of the house most of the time.

I have a savannah monitor... Was nippy when he was younger, but I worked with him. He used to be very cuddly and loved to be held, but now he would rather do his own thing, be it roaming or on a walk around. He is very active, as in, he wants to roam and if you pet him he'll move away or let you do it (which isn't that common anymore). He is very stubborn and will take the path of most resistance. So, what I am trying to say, if you want a cuddly lizard you can really interact with, not a Savannah monitor. It's like owning a scaled cat, you don't do, he does. I still love him, but, he is my first monitor (not my first lizard, I have had iguanas, water dragons and geckos), but I should of started with maybe a tegu or ackie. He does eat well, and I mean he will eat everything. I feed him Raw (food brand) salmon/beef so it's not too fatty but high in nutrients. I love him but he is a grumpy lil guy. His name is Savy because he is savy with the ladies (girls always think he is adorable and want to hold him. He'll let them hold them but literally no men. It's kind of funny, but how he got his name... well also it's short for savannah). Good video, and they are expensive to keep unless you find a big display case ( I have a 8x5x4 and he is 3 1/2 feet), find out that 300+ watt flood lights and ceramic heaters work, and use cypress mulch like it took time for me to find out.

For anyone looking for an excellent source and breeder for more Savannah monitors New England Reptile Distributors actually socialize them aswell and have great videos on them. Expect to pay thousands though. Also Clint and friends have you seen the video of a Lace Monitor (not savannah thanks :) ) being trained to wave to ask to be let out? Absolutely amazing! I think the channel was CrocDoc "can you train a monitor"

I feed my monitor calci worms, horn worms, gut loaded dubias, calcium loaded eggs, few daily gut loaded crickets dusted in calcium, butterworms and wax worms only for his target training and mealworms for snacks. He was an import wild caught young young baby but he was the calmest and FATTEST so I took him in and daily monitor every little thing about him. I own a reptile rescue with 75 permanent resident forever family members "animals" and room for another 160 reacues rehabbers and rehomes. My savannah monitor is in my top 3 favorite personal animals ever. He is my boy and my doll. Super sweet to handle. I made sure to keep him warm but not around the action the first 60 days. With multiple small micro insect meals every day by me personally and tiny cameras watching him 24/7 so I could be sure he gets the best start for being a hatchling stressed out. He is now a fancy boy who i adore. Worth every bit of effort. I owe my years of experience especially with high needs rescued animals for the ease of owning my monitor. I love tegus and other monitors but my savannah is my favorite by far of any lizzard ever.

Oh dang. My moms ex boyfriend has a savannah monitor. He is taking horrible care of it, worse than I thought. It lives in a 40g tank (its still small enough to fit in it, but it looked rather cramped). He uses ASTRO TURF for substrate. It only has a heat pad for heat. And the best part, he feeds it nothing but the wild rats that infest his dads house where he lives!

You know. I love every single one of your videos, and have voiced in the past probably several times that I would love other monitor lizard videos. Just throwing it out there, if you ever plan to do a video on monitors such as Niles, asian water monitors, or white throats- I would love to volunteer my animals and my supervision with them for a video. (All of mine are iffy, but the best behavior goes in order by: Nile, Savannah, asian water, cape banded white throat) Seems like that would be super fun to do, and I would love to help deter impulse buyers or owners who just don't realize what the animal is and needs. Also of course to help anyone as thickheaded as I am, who will get one anyways, figure out exactly what they're looks my for need and temperament wise. No idea how close you are to Arizona, but hey if I never offer I never get to join the fun.

Most monitor owners I know feed them wrong (along with lighting and caging and handling). So they live fast and die young (like within 3-5 years). I hate that they sell for so cheap because that encouraged impulse buys. Also people often feed them as big of rats as they can. Also the temps required for them is insanely hard to get with standard heating elements.

Would you ever consider a reevaluation of this score? I can only speak for myself, but I’m the person who saw that 40 dollar lizard, bought on impulse, then took it home. It has truly been a fantastic experience. I’ve learned a lot and my Sav is amazing. I built a large enclosure for him and he is absolutely thriving. I can reach in and pet him anytime I want. Not once has he been defensive and has only ever accidentally bitten me during feeding, which I don’t count as being bitten. There are certainly people that shouldn’t have these guys, and yes I do have an ackie who makes a skip and a hop in socialization for every step my Sav makes, but my Sav is my baby.

I had a savannah monitor for years while in medical school and residency. He was like a cat, and we enjoyed hanging out together on the couch while I was studying or watching TV. I went out of town for a weekend and all three of his heat lamps burned out while I was gone (a primary, a backup, and the backup to the backup). He caught a respiratory infection from that, which ended him.

@ClintsReptiles
@ClintsReptiles 6 жыл бұрын
Upfront costs are not just what the animal costs, but also the other things that you will need to buy to keep it alive once you get it home. This isn't the lifetime cost of ownership, but it is more than just the animal. If someone sold you a CBB monitor for $20 it was either stolen from the breeder, they were doing you a huge favor, or they were lying to you. Monitors are very expensive and difficult to produce. $20 baby monitors are farmed imports or wild caught.
@lidathorn6449

I sure hope he wasn't stolen!!! I mean, either way (cb or not) I still got an awesome little guy.. He was climbing around his enclosure when I got home today and I was able to easily scoop him up and hold him and even pick off a few shed pieces without protest. The website I got him from are out of stock now, so I can't look at the description anymore, but I'm sure it wasn't listed as WC, I wouldn't have gotten him if it were.

his tameness is 100% due to improper husbandry not because he is actually tame. i am one of those sav experts clint refers to and will agree with what i am saying. if your sav is in a fish tank or other unsealed enclosure it is not properly heated, babies need 135f basking surface temp a 80f coolside ambient an mid 90s hot side ambient. go to fb and join savanah monitor group, monitors tegus and iguana or savanah monitor husbandry world wide and educate yourself.

Sir, I had been researching larger reptiles for almost 2 and a half years before deciding to get what I've got, and I STILL do. I AM a member of several groups, and my bosc is WELL taken care of. He wasn't when I first got him, either. I had to quarantine him, and somewhat incubate him. He had a discharge coming from his eye, he was undersized and I honestly didn't think he'd make it. But today, he's very active in his enclosure, and he does wig out for a moment when I scoop him up as one would expect. The temperatures are where they need to be, as well as the various lighting and ventilation/humidity control in his larger-than-even-necessary enclosure. He's eating VERY well, a variety of critters including the occasional pinkie mouse, lean white meats and sashimi grade fish. He knows me as his keeper as well as "the food bringer", he greets me when I come home from work, and he enjoys being handled BY ME. NOT by everyone!! He doesn't much like when others get too close, this is how I feel like he understands that I am his person. Yes, sir, my bosc is in fact a great one, thanks to my constant research, efforts and the daily attention I give him. Not because he is ill. But thank's for playing.
@Dustflinger80
@Dustflinger80 6 жыл бұрын
90% of the care info on savs is false. you should be aware that lean meats, sashami grade fish etc are improper dietary items. avoid protein fillers like ground up or processed poultry or filleted fish. if your are going to feed vertebrates make sure they are whole just cut into easily eaten pieces. btw the groups i mentioned have actual breeders in them. they are not show off groups.
