Well, this answers my other curiosity.... larger reptiles need a LOT more room than my bearded dragon, who's 4 ft tank is decent, just wish it could be a little more. But if I went down the Savannah Monitor road, or even an Iguana.... this helps me understand just a piece of what all they would need. Thank you!! Happy to be a patron and help support all of this!

I like your lighting and heating system! I agree with gradual light and heat, it's not constant throughout the day if they were outdoors. I also notice Clawdius doesn't like to bask at higher temps even tho they say it can go up to 140F. I think that's really for if you have a number of basking spots with various temps- they really need a temp range choice. I adjust based on his behavior. Sometimes he basks on his rocks, sometimes he basks nearby where it's a bit cooler. His hot spots is around 110F. I'm lucky I have a "Florida room" that gets a lot of light for my reptiles, so natural light starts coming in before their lights come on. I also double check my timers versus sunrise and sunset times occasionally since it changes through the year. Clawdius just yawned at me. He's having a lazy day, I gave him a good feeding yesterday. Turning all these bugs into poop takes lots of energy!

You know, they need a wide range, so large enclosures are needed if you dont use a heat panel, and also they are picky about basking spots.

Ranting is always good, especially when you're as passionate about your creature - reptile - family. It gets your point across and, truthfully, shows how much you care and how dedicated you are to give them as close to natural habitat that you can. As for your Savannah Monitor not being able to be tamed. If he wasn't some what tame, he'd have taken a chunk out of your hand as you were gesturing over his head or he'd have flinched & shied away from your gestures. Whatever the detractors say, don't listen to them! As long as your animals are healthy & happy in their environments that is all that matters.

We are just thinking of the animal here no disrespect intended. These guys are a serious undertaking it’s not an animal to be bought thinking you are going to somehow have a scaly puppy running around. I own one & love her but definitely wouldn’t recommend for everyone get an ackie if you want to start with moniters. Seriously they can send you to the ER in the blink of an eye I’ve seen some nasty bites over the years. Just my two cents but how do you know what they do in the wild!??! Throw all the hate you want Again I’m just thinking of the animals here folks. 😄

@@asublueeyes4583 Hi I would love your sources on what is wrong. We know what they do in the wild do to the massive 1026-2017 herp study on them and other lizards. Which is what I use when heating a lighting all my reptiles. Im sure you are well away of ferguson indexes etc and have read the study, also about their diapause etc. I would love input though on what you feel needs to be changed. Also to note I have been around Savannah Monitors with a setup like this who have lived and are currently over 15 years old.

ya that should be good. If you see them basking a lot like most the day you may want to bump it to 115 but 110 is nice. People say 140 etc, then the lizard doesnt bask or basks only on the edge where its cooler
