In this video, I review my Canon RF85mm F2 Macro IS STM Lens. I compare the lens to the RF85mm F1.2 L USM and the RF50mm F1.8 STM. This is a wonderful little lens that should be in many photographers' bags. I use it for my wedding rings and detail photos on wedding days. It is very sharp and has nice background blur. The autofocus and image stabilization work well. I highly recommend as a first portrait lens or as a backup lens! Thanks for watching!

For my eyes, the 85mm f2 looks more accurate for real life and flattering. The 1.2 version looked more green. Maybe thats just my eyes but this video sold me on getting the f2 version. Thanks for this comparison!

Awesome review and your photo work is Beautiful! It looks like the f2 is wider than the 1.2 and that may be why the 1.2 bokeh is larger???

Thank you, I am wanting to expand my RF lens selection. My next lens will be an RF 85. A few months ago I got the 28-70 F2 and for wedding I can do just about everything with that one lens but the 85 will round out what I feel I need for my style. But right now can’t get the $3000 85 1.2. So this cheaper but great option is what I’ll use until I can get the L lens

I have used this lens on R7 and R6m2 and it does a fine job on macros. Also on indoor sports like table tennis. The focus speed for table tennis works fine. Going through all the focus range is slow and noisy but that has never been an issue for me in real life scenarios where focus adjustments are typically much smaller.

How does it compare IQ wise to the 70-200 f4 L for portraits? I own both and struggle to decide which to use

The f2 seems a bit pink and f1.2 looks a bit green to me in the skin tones. Very happy to see that f2 is still fantastic and has so many other benefits that f1.2 cannot offer.

Thanks! I certainly think I could. However I use my 1.2 a lot for speeches and low light situation and it really performs well there.

I sometimes feel like I could live without my 85mm 1.2, then I use it again and am like wow there isn’t another lens which produces these images straight out of the camera. I started with the f2, I couldn’t really get it to focus in lower light so that’s how I ended up with the 1.2. As I say, other lenses do work similarly like the 70-200 2.8, even the 24-70 is sharp like the 85, only when using the 85mm 1.2 it just hits where others can’t get close..

Feeling the same here! There are good uses for both! Then I put on the 1.2 for portraits and have the same wow reaction! I have been using the f2 lately for beach sessions where I don't want to risk getting sand in my expense lens.

It's a very nice video. Is it worth buying the 85 mm 1.2 for a higher price? There doesn't seem to be much difference in quality between the 85 mm f2 and the 85mm 1.2. It's confusing.

Thanks! I think they both have different purposes. I still use my 1.2 a lot for low light situations and portraits. The f2 I use more on beach sessions and for macro work.

Denim Jacket Girl looks slightly better with the f1.2L but I am really impressed with how well they turned out. The f2 looks absolutely amazing and the blur is still pretty nice. Is the f1.2L worth $2000 more, well of course yes but if all you can afford is a f2 then honestly if you can shoot portraits then this lens is still amazing.

You need to stop down to 2.8 or f4-5.6 on 85mm f2.

The more I look at it, the more I realize Im falling more and more out of love with bokeh. Having some blur in the background is great, but too much like at 1.2 where you cant even make out the scene is really starting to bug me. Maybe its the spike in A.I. generated images that have conditioned me but it just feels so artificial to me now. I tend to stop down from f2.8 - 5.6 for portraits now, gives just the right amount of blur and subject separation without over doing it.
