I love the videos from Dustin. So detailed and thorough that help me with my decision making everytime. Does anyone know how to resolve an issue with an RF lens not retracting when the camera turns off? I have lens retracting activated, but the same issue is still happening.

Hmmm, that's really the only setting that controls that. Are you saying that it never retracts it, or occasionally does not?

@@DustinAbbottTWI the problem was actually because I didn't understand the system. I have 2 different rf lenses and one has the capability to do that and the other one doesn't. There was nothing wrong with the settings or the system. -24-105 rf f4 USML -Nifty 50 RF

Hi Dustin, i’ve literally been going through all the videos on the RF85 f2, but yours are always top-notch. I’m waiting for 100 mm f2.8 macro to be restocked but it takes ages. Would the RF 85 f2 be a good replacement? I want to use it for both.. stills and video. From what i see, the 85 is not good for video, but i’m curious to see your opinion. Thanks!

It works fine for footage, but the AF is just not very good for video in my experience. You're also only getting 1:2 rather than 1:1 macro capabilities, so that makes it hard to recommend in your situation

Great video as always DA. Non 05mm lens-related question. Do you find filters such as the b+w nano clear filter affect the image quality of a lens? My work is wedding photography related if that matters!

I don't see a lot of value other than protection, I guess. You are adding an additional optical element, and I have seen filters increase flare proneness. I would personally spend that money on a lens hood and use that; you'll get both protection of the front element along with shading.

@@DustinAbbottTWI Thanks for the diligent response DA! It would be used solely for protecting the lens, as one of my old Sony lenses got scratched for reasons unbeknownst to me. My new RF glass is super expensive and I want to make sure they're adequately protected.

Great review. I am interested in this lens specially for portrait photos and some macro photos here and there. Do you think getting the EF 100 mm F2.8 L IS USM along with the mount adapter is a better idea for this purpose (portrait + macro)?

A qualified yes. The 100L macro has actually really jumped in price (shocking for a 12 year old lens!), and isn't as good a value as it was. It does give you better autofocus and build and a 1:1 macro experience. The 85mm will be a more compact package and has arguably better image quality (though not by much).

@@DustinAbbottTWI thanks for your insight. The 100mm f2.8 was of lower price even until last year. Unfortunately, they’ve cramped up the price recently. That makes me doubt if Canon’s planning to release its RF version anytime soon. In terms of the RF 85mm f2, I hope a firmware update fixes the AF issues.

Hello Dustin. Excellent video as always. I currently have have the Tamron 85. Would you consider the canon 85f2 as an upgrade over the Tamron? Also when you were reviewing the Samyang 85 did you come upon issues with focusing? A few other reviewers noticed that the samyang was producing more out of focus images compared to the canon 85. Camera body is the r5.

Hi Michael, I've actually had good success with the focus on the Samyang. I've used it for both stills and video often. As for the Canon being an upgrade over the Tamron - that's complicated. The build is not an upgrade (the Tamron has weather sealing, a metal body, fluorine coating, and a hood). The autofocus is not an upgrade. The Canon's upgrade is that it has much higher magnification and very nice image quality. Better image quality? I'm not sure.

Another great review! Best part of your reviews are all your sample photos that you’ve taken (even in Winter!). One suggestion (or ask?), when you review some of these new RF Canon lenses, can you also do a quick test on the old EOS R or RP? I know there’s not a lot of mirrorless Canons out yet, and I haven’t made the jump yet...but I’m curious how well some of these newer RF (especially non-L) lenses will do on the more affordable R camera. I can’t be the only amateur photographer that can’t afford the $5500 for the R5 (or, $3600 for an R6 which I wouldn’t want anyway). You used to test the EF lenses with the 5D IV and 80D which I really appreciated - far too often reviewers on KZfaq just jump to the latest bodies! :-) Thanks again for all your great content!

Hi Andrew, the problem is that I sell the older bodies to help fund purchasing the new ones. You'd also be surprised at how much flack you get from the audience when you test on lower resolution bodies when higher ones exist!

if I were to use this lens on a gimbal (DJI Ronin RS2), would this cause a problem with the motors from the RS2 because of the focus motor shifting coming from the lens and changing the weight coming from the camera and could cause motor malfunction on the gimbal? Sorry if the question sounds a little complicated it's a little difficult to explain....

I don't think enough weight is shifting to cause a problem. The center of gravity should stay pretty similar.

Another good review. I own the lens and it meets my needs, but the AF is definitely deserving of a firmware update. I'm OK with it being slow, given that it's a (near) macro lens, but I want it to be more confident. I have to think that it can be fixed with firmware.

Hi Dustin, I understand that if you focus close the lens extends, but if I choose the 0.5m limit to not shoot macro, the lens extends the same? or extends only if I shoot macro shots?

After watching both of your reviews, I'm inclined to think the Samyang lens provides the best buy, but I am curious what your thoughts are--which would you prefer?

@@pedroprietolopez330 I read a press release for Sigma stating they are having manufacturing issues--they don't have enough factories to produce more glass, and that is why they haven't started offering RF lenses yet. They did not have a timeline for when they would be able to produce RF glass in that press release, so I'm not sure I'd wait. Also, with the cost of either the Canon 1.8 or the Samyung 1.4 for RF, I'd rather make a purchase now instead of waiting an undetermined timeframe for Sigma or Tamron's offerings.

I'm buying a few RF lenses at the moment and I've probably watched 10 of your reviews in the last few days, all of which, have been excellent. Thanks for doing them, I'm sure I'll watch many more. By the way, my RF 35mm 1.8 IS STM hunts a bit too much for focus while recording video at times too, sometimes even looking off into space in some relatively straightforward situations. Good to know the RF 85mm F2's AF can also frustrate as my copy should be arriving in the next few days.

It's unfortunate, for sure. Many of Canon's new lenses are quite excellent in this regard. Even the inexpensive 50mm F1.8 STM is quite good for video AF.

i actually noticed the focus on my canon 100mm L lens behaving the same as this lens.some times.like it just doesnt want to focus..or even though im not focusing, the lens wants to focus?

Macro lenses can definitely be more complicated for focus, though my 100L has been fairly mannerly.

@@DustinAbbottTWI just remembered as i have turned off the setting "lens drive when af inpossible". It was off. Apparently it wont bother focusing on certain lighting.. Gotta enable it. Then it will bother to focus.. Lazy lens

Thank you for the review! As always, great! - The STM is what hold me off from buying it, and your review show'd me that my "gut feeling" is true. STM is fine for smaller lenses like the RF 50mm 1.8 (or the older 40mm EF 2.8) as the "throw" is very short, like 1cm max but when it has to move so much glas so far... it gets slow. I own a used 85mm 1.8 EF with USM and the difference is huge, eventhough this lense is like 20 years old now. Thus im holding off on it, my hope is that Tamron or Sigma will soon start to release 3rd party lenses for the RF Mount and "solve" that issue for me. Its actually the same reason that i still use my old 35mm f2 EF instead of the new one. Why canon designed the lense the way it is... those engineers arent dumb, and my guess is they did it because they have basically no competition - yet - on the RF mount. The 24-105mm F4L i own is excellent, i own a R6 so... the lower mp count definitely influences my "sharpness" perception, that im aware. But they did USM AND weather sealing AND lense hood on that lense... for "only" 1030$, why cant they do it with the 85 ?

It's a little perplexing, for sure, but I think the answer just arrived - the Canon RF 100mm F2.8L IS, which will probably have similarly great optics but with all the bells and whistles.

You can get a screw-in metal lens hood for about $12 from Amazon. I did that, it works fine. I don't want to encourage Canon's tendency to cheap out by not including the hood with the lens, and to try to add 10% to the price by charging $50 for a $10 item. The lens itself is just fine, though. Some reviewers are showing that the 85mm f1.2 is a little sharper, but I think they're splitting hairs. You can barely see the difference at 100%; I doubt it would be visible at all in, say, an 11x14 print.

That's true about the hood, though I don't think it lets Canon off the hook. And yes, the lens is nice and sharp. The contrast isn't as high as the F1.2 lens (or the Samyang F1.4), but it does have really lovely bokeh.

@@DustinAbbottTWI To be honest, the f1.2 was disqualified by its price AND its size. I did rent it, and yes, it's ever so slightly sharper and contrastier than the f2. You can see the difference if you pixel-peep, but I couldn't see it in the 11x14 prints that are my usual final product. I could maybe justify a $2700 lens if I were making money with it every week, but I'm not. Plus, mounted on a Canon RP, it's like carrying around a garbage can. It's enormous, and kind of goofy on a small camera.

I don't know why people are complaining about the STM noise. 85mm is generally used mostly for photography and not video....Unless you're in a church or funeral then it's not a problem

Perhaps that isn't a big deal to you, but it is to others. What if the focus noise disturbs your macro subject, for example?

@@88hridz I have the R and the RF 35mm 1.8. It’s a nice lens but for me I’d rather have the 85. Reason? I already have the RF 24-105 f4 and mostly shoot photos. I would say if video is more important the 35 is a lot lighter and I prefer to use it over the zoom. Depends on use case but I personally wouldn’t see me using the 85 for videos but plan on buying it for portraits. Not sure if that helps but that’s my take. I would add, the compact size when using my variable ND filter on the 35 is great.

@@jmich5123 I like your perspective. I also have the same kit lens which I can use for videos if I want to. I’m looking for a prime lens just for portraits, and the RF system currently has this 35 and 85 mm options. Both have 1:2 macro capabilities and they are both IS STM. That’s why I had this question to begin with, which one to go for. I also am a little biased to get the 85 mm, but many reviewers say it has a pretty frustrating AF system.

Ugh! I’m still debating whether this or the Samyang would be better.. I don’t like the focus and the limited aperture of f2, but I don’t have a dedicated Macro and IS is always nice. On the other hand, I also don’t have a dedicated portrait lens so an 85 1.4 seems like the obvious choice. I shoot a bit of everything, so it’s pretty hard to decide! 😔

You sound like a good candidate for this lens if you can live with slightly slower focus speed. You'll love the versatility and optics of the lens.

Have you heard of a 35 or 50 coming from Samyang anytime soon? Seems like they came out with the 14 and 85, had good success, then stopped with their RF glass.

It's the kind of slap I'm pretty accustomed to from Canon at this point, unfortunately.

To be honest I don't find this lens so compelling when the Samyang 85mm F1.4 RF lens exists. I have the Sony version, and plan on getting one in the RF mount when I switch to the R5

Fair enough. I've got the RF mount and love it. I did sell my FE version to get the Sigma 85mm F1.4 DN, which I liked slightly better on Sony.

The only problem with Canon. They don't really want to change to market standards. At least it takes them some time to adjust and that's why the lose towards other (previously not in the market brands) contenders.

There's some real truth to this. I think that Canon runs the risk of having a lot of negative feelings in the market if they don't adjust to the modern standard of expectation. Opening their platform has worked well for Sony, and Canon has to adjust.

Thank you, this is spot on! I have this lens and pictures are super, but AF is _incredibly_#%$££ bad and slow 🤬😤😖. I have AF lenses from several manufacturers since the early 1990s and never had AF as bad as this one. The STM drive on the 1.8/35 is much more useable.

I absolutely love your channel and have been watching for years, but this time I am a bit baffled. Surely you must have used other macro lenses before? The AF noisy motors, hunting AF etc is a characteristic of not all then most macro lenses. Yet you speak about these things as if they are surprising or unique to this lens?

Ummm, they are unique to this lens these days. I've reviewed dozens of macro lenses, and most all of them have better AF performance than this. Competing lenses on Sony like the Sony 90mm F2.8 G or the Sigma 105mm F2.8 DN are light years better in AF performance

Lens hood can be bought for $13 from Amazon and give the middle finger to Canon for not including it

That’s unfortunately pretty much the case. I have to question whether saving $10 is worth the loss of good will for Canon.

Please don't buy this lens, folks. Canon could've and should've done better with this lens. In fact, it's a regression from the EF version in almost every way. There's no reason in this day and age for 1st party glass (at 1st party glass prices) to be this loud and slow to autofocus, have an external focus mechanism, be anything less than f/1.8, etc.

I did really like the image quality, but I agree on the autofocus front. There are people that write to me who love the lens, though.

Calling it a garbage lens is really overstating things, but there's no question the autofocus is disappointing.
