You are a jewel. I am a mother of 6. I am also 70. You are setting a great example for all the newbies. It does make an difference. It is all about attitude. My day. started at 5 a.m. and ended at 11.p.m. I always said I have a job and that is the only way I was able to stay home with my babies. Keep it up sweetie. When you kidos are adults and gets together they start talking about things that happened when they were kids. It is very enlightening. My oldest daughter was about 13 when we had the last baby. She was so excited, her friends were appalled. They could not believe that she actually loved her siblings. Just think of all she could have if she was an only child. She was voted best dressed in her middle school. We later homeschooled. I resale shopped. If I say so myself she did look good. She had some shorts that her friends loved. Lol, I made them. You go girl you will raise hard working kind, intelligent children. Good bless.

I really appreciate you sharing your journey! This information is invaluable!!!!! Most of us didn’t have the most sustainable or loving childhoods, or the best roll models. I remember at your age we lived on a farm. Raised all of our own food (meat and vegetables) I canned, dehydrated, froze a lot. We never purchased paper towels or plastic containers. Reused other plastic containers from margarine. We used rags not disposables. Our grocery bill was $20/month 20 yrs ago for 2 people. It can be done. Requires a lot of work and energy. I admire your large family and your stewardship of the family finances. You are a great wife/mother.

You save half the amount that I get in a year just inside the house! But you mentioned gardening. Growing food can save a lot of money as well. Now you need to record how much food you grow/forage and calculate it's value. Also the difference between cooking from scratch or buying preprocessed food. A homemaker that takes the job seriously can be very valuable indeed.

I have 9 kids (homeschooled too) and we had 1 income (were a military family)...only have 1 at home now. When they were all young I made things like my own curtains (and made smaller curtains from larger ones or from old sheets) costumes and clothes. I made diapers, breast and menstrual pads from old flannel blankets. Still hang things to dry and hand wash. I never liked using disposable products either...can get expensive. I tried very hard to reduce, reuse, recycle, repurpose, or remake. Always had a garden. Still make just about everything from scratch, and dehydrate freeze, and can food. I spent less money for food etc than my friends with fewer kids. Vinegar and baking soda are great cleaners. Love Norwex too!

I always cooked meals at home and it was very rare we ever ate away from home.. I love to cook, bake etc.. I raised our kids on thrifted cloths and toys and most items we had.. Our home was filled with love and I wouldn't change a thing.. Love your videos and your home steading way of life..

I learned to reuse as a child in the 60s. My mom worked outside our home, so I became the homemaker as those new products came on the market. Mom never bought them, because she didn't do the cleaning. I took the old-fashioned ideas with me when I married in the 80s. Sadly, none of my daughters understand frugal living. I have a dishwasher but prefer handwashing--can't stand paper plates. I used disposable diapers with one child, who was seriously ill. It took all my time to give him several treatments a day. But before him, I used cloth diapers with all my other kids. I never used disposable wipes but used a wet washcloth with no extra cleaning stuff. Baby powder was simple corn starch. Vaseline was our only baby lotion or cream.

We literally just broke ourselves of the paper towel habit this month. I put a small basket of cloth napkins (that I made from older tea towels so zero dollars for that switch!) in the same spot on the counter where the paper towel holder used to sit, so the habit of 'going to that spot' is still there but it's been replaced with cloth :-)

I read all the comments and it is true allot of young people do not know how to use cloth diapers or make wipes, or things like that. I came from a large family and learned how to do all these things. Growing up we never hardly had paper towels or paper things unless it was a holiday or lots of people over. Even then we had allot of extra dishes. Never had a dish washier or dryer. Even in the snow we hung clothes out. I am olde now but am amazed at how much the younger generations does not know when it comes to home keeping. Nice to see young families like yours still use these skills. God Bless you and your family. Enjoy every minute its gone so quickly. I was a stay at home mom too. Husband in military.

Amen!! We are also stewards of the earth and reducing our waste is part of that. I made cloth napkins out of fabric about four years ago. I use them both as napkins and paper towels since we used to use paper towels as napkins and paper towels. I only have to wash that load of laundry once a week and sometimes once every two weeks for a family of four. It really bothered me that we were wasting so much money on paper towels. It took my husband a little bit of getting used to and I do still buy paper towels at times mainly for soaking up grease out of our pans to protect our septic. Great video.

Love this video!! About 10 years ago we stopped buying most paper products too. We use white wash rags I’ve bought in bulk as “Kleenex” and I have cloth napkins from the thrift store. During the spring we got a bidet which has been a huge savings. We use the flannel baby wipes to pay dry after using the bidet so we’ve used less than one roll of toilet paper since May. I still keep it available for guests but I didn’t have to worry about any shortages which was nice!!

I plan to make a list of things homeschool mamas can do to save money. I have found making a minimalistic system helps keep me from overspending there as well. As a lover of curriculum and books I have learned that I only have so much time so we need to focus and not overwhelm the teacher nor the student....thus saving money on items that we would not use well to worthy the cause of purchase. I have also found repurposing alot of items like oatmeal containers and popsicle sticks can allow one to make tactile activities for free for your preschoolers. Our home loves the minimalist Montessori style for the younger years, but have learned that slowly getting quality toys is so much better than a ton of junk in a toy box. My children now have: 1. Megablocks in a laundry basket in the preschoolers room plus their own lovey toy. This is all that goes in their room as children rarely keep toys properly put away without constant supervision-and that drives this mama nuts😂....soo.... We were given a 12 cube shelf from a friend and have 4 baskets of toys on the top...we keep rotsting out a couple of the baskets into a locked closet as needed. We got dollar tree plastic tubs which are the perfect size for this type of shelf and holds tge whole activity. 2. Train set...walmart sells a set for 15 bucks...buy 2 and that will last forever. 3. Badic blocks....walmart sells a set for 11...one set is plenty there. We have some wooden alphabet blocls in that set as well. 4. A bowling set we got from my sister-in-law. 5. Lauri peg building sets.....you could also add tge number or alphabet boards to this set.....excellent product. For Christmas this year we are adding the following baskets to our rotation. 6. A wooden musical instrument set. 7. A knock off magnetic tiles set. 8. Legos....but because of babies this is not going on the shelf but will be gotten out at quiet hour for little boys. We put the littlest babies toys on the bottom row. She has a piano toy, shape sorter, piggy with coins, and I am getting her stacking cups soon. The next row up is for preschoolers and it has a stacking toy and a wooden lacing toy. So it goes baby, toddlers, and then on top lower elementary or something I want to do with the littles like knobbed puzzles. The top is unreachable by babies under 2 so it is great to put items specifically for the older kiddos like an abacus, globe, pattern blocks and dominoes. We also have limited our board games to 10.....and other games to one box......like javks and pickup sticks. This goes in my hall locked closet. Again without supervision they tend to leave pieces out so I want my investment to last. So we get out games on rainy or cold days and they enjoy them. Other ideas for baskets would be suppose or Lincoln logs....but we do not have those at this time. Our toy/Montessori shelf is right in the middle of the livingroom where mama sees it often amd can call a quick pickup so we dont lose toys as easily.

Someone in my moms group was saying that they make one bag of trash a week and we have to take out our once a week wether it is full or not. Maybe this is the reason because we use no paper plates or napkins or many other disposable things. I really enjoy using cloth napkins, towels and rags because they do a better job then the disposable alternative. We keep rags under the sink in the kitchen. We have a pile of hand towels in the bathroom. We have cleaning rags from old tshirts and socks with holes in them. So easy and so much cheaper!! Great tips.

I have been working on some of these things. I've been using cloth napkins more. Some I bought and some were from old clothes. When you talked about paper plates, I thought of a funny story. When my youngest child, who is now 27, was little, I remember when we had been using paper plates a lot and I had run out. He said, "No more plates! We're going to starve!!" I knew at that moment that I had been buying too many. I do have a couple small packages that I buy at the Dollar Store, but I use them rarely. I don't have a dishwasher, but I don't really mind doing dishes that much anymore - except I do get tired on a day I'm doing a lot of canning lol.

As someone who doesn't have many older mums around who try to do things eco-friendly and cheap, that would be super helpful. Just the things you learn with the experience and also the logistics, e.g. how you store your dirty diapers until laundry, how you get your babies to sleep with so much happening in the house, etc.

Cloth diapers are so precious! I have used them with my last 5 children. We love osocozy prefolds, Snappis, and thirsties duo wraps as it makes a 2 size system. The size 2 still fit my 6 year old whom has night wetting issues. We have been using disposables for my new baby because my washer has been broken and the laundrymat doesnt allow one to wash cloth diapers there. I do have a plunger washer thing that I bought on Amazon amd love, but I dont want to plunge diapers in my tub unless it is an emergency. Today we are getting a used washer and cannot wait to put her back into cloth diapers. She is potty training now as well and doing great, so we may be diaperfree soon except for my son at night. Girls potty train so early...it is so nice!

Great video... Thanks for sharing. I would suggest ommiting the vinegar in your clorox wipes. Lots of home recipes call for mixing things like vinegar and soap or vinegar and baking soda. However, mixing acids and bases neutralizes their pH and makes them ineffective, wasting the ingredients and making the final product ineffective. I usually use vinegar as a rinse aid... After the soap or baking soda is washed away. I do use vinegar and hot water only to wash my dishes though!

Two of my favorite things to use for storage containers is one canning jars and the second is Pyrex containers that come with lids you can get them in squares and rounds and all different sizes.

Hi! You’re doing a great job! Please do a video on washing the cloth feminine hygiene products. For my children’s clothes I accept hand me downs & only shop clearance & use my local thrift & consignment stores. Most of their clothes are great quality & are usually a dollar & under. Walmart is great on clearance items. I have cloth diapered for approximately 12 years but do use disposables if they’re given to me or I’d I find them on extreme clearance. Making our laundry soap over the years has also helped a ton & we have ditched paper towels for years. Keep up the good work. God takes note of your stewardship. We have been made stewards over our families & our aim is to hear, “Well done thou good & faithful servant.”

Jessica, I agree that fabric diapers are more comfortable for baby. I used them on my children 40 years ago! My mom used fabric menstrual pads. When raising my family , my septic tank was super sensitive even with dry wells. We had to curve our use of water, so I think that's when I made the switch over to disposables of all sorts!! Now that we hooked up to the city sewer, we are empty nesters!🤔

I use almost all of these tips except the cloth wipes (sometimes) I do use cloth wipes but rarely. Also my 4 year old is still in diapers (he has learning delays and possible autism) but because he’s so big I use the big kid “good nights” they say that they do make a big kid cloth diaper but I’ve never been able to find them. My daughter still fits the normal pocket ones. Come to think of it maybe you could make a cloth diaper video. How you do it and the routines plus detergent and how you wash them. New subscriber from Alberta Canada hello 😄.

Definitely need to take some of these into consideration. I do use cleaning rags for most things so no clorox wipes and cloth mop heads. I do use paper towels for the toilet bc ew lol. And I do make baby wipes, but use paper towels. I still find it saves money compared to traditional wipes (and better for baby) but not eco-friendly. Love the idea for cloth bread bags for muffins and stuff

I use plates or pot lids on top of my leftover dishes to put in refrigerator. I also like to put leftovers in my canning jars or jars from store ex. Spaghetti sauce

oh my word!!! I did that!!! We were totally out of toilet paper and I missed the memo about toilet paper. When I went to order some I couldn't find it anywhere. I found some crazy expensive "toilet paper". my husband says, " well buy it! and you better get 2!" well when it showed up at the door it was paper towels...... I don't think we've even used 1/4 of it. We just dont use paper towels. But handy to have on hand when I remember we have them lol!!

I have bought a few boxes of baby wipes for emergency reasons and disposable plates. I definitely need to get some cloth pads for my daughter's as I tend to not have periods due to always being nursing or expecting😂.

Great ideas! Do you have a video on making the reusable pads? We switched from paper towels years ago and I can’t even imagine how much that has saved us! We keep an extra restroom size garbage can next to our kitchen garbage and just wash them in hot water to cut the grease when it gets filled up.

Very good video and wise words as Proverbs women we should indeed tend to the ways of our home and be good stewards. I buy used cloth dinner napkins at the thrift store when I can find good quality not the shiny ones that don't absorb. I have a lot. Husband at first turned up his nose now he can't stand paper napkins (we get them sometimes when we fast food which is rare). I use old bathroom "guest" towels in the kitchen again thrift store they are so much more absorbent. I started making cloth TP several years ago sort of got off the band wagon till last year when the panic buying started. Pulled them out and started making more and still making more now so that I have a good enough supply. We are only a family of 2 husband is not on board with using and that is totally o.k. it still saves us a ton of money and is so much better for our skin and the environment. I still buy paper towels for messes like grease that I don't want in my washing machine and right now we have a new puppy who is having accidents in the house but I'm usually very frugal with using those. I am amazed at how much disposable diapers cost and sad at what they are doing to our environment. I wish my young friends had all used cloth at least all of them but one or two breast fed ( you forgot to mention that one lol) which I would guess you probably do. Thanks for sharing and inspiring others to learn how to be more frugal and less destructive of our planet. Anna In Ohio

I am 59 years old and I cloth diapered my children with the plastic pants over top. I even would wash and hang them on the cloth line outside. I do all that you showed.....cloth everything. I love your apron, what pattern did you use to make it?

I use a menstrual cup and we cloth diaper, we use cloth wipes for our entire house hold and use rags and hand towels instead of paper towels. And honestly ever since we started this we have wondered why we didnt start it sooner. And after the pandemic started we were completely unphased by the shortages of diapers, wipes, toilet paper, menstrual products, etc. It was amazing and has been incredible.
