AskWoodMan reuses everything in his shop. He recommends finding as many uses as possible for used sandpaper. AskWoodman.com/
When you use a half sheet sander there is a section of sandpaper on either end that is never used. Allan saves these little pieces of sandpaper and uses them for various projects.

Yea I always like to use old sand paper in different ways. I'm a flooring contractor and I use my 7 Inch Edger Discs has templates for cutting out around toilet flanges which is 7 inches so boom you can reuse your old discs as a template to save you time and money. I also use old sanding belts to use on a old drywall sander to sand my floor prep smooth before laying my floors.

@askwoodman yeah, busy times, but as long as the weather is good I'm not complaining (well, perhaps a little, because I can't work as much with wood as I want to). By the way, I just remembered another trick with used sandpaper. Make a flap disc! Cut the pieces of paper to any length you want (all same size), next cut several 4 inch long cuts into both sides of the sandpaper, stack about 40 of them back to back, and drill a hole trough them and add a threaded bolt + two nuts to secure them.

I use circular sandpaper, and when the edge start wearing down I re-cut it for use on my smaller sanding pad, and when the edge on that one is battered, I switch to an even smaller sanding pad. 3 uses out of a single piece of sandpaper!

Good 120 grit half sheet sander paper is expensive in the UK even from the DIY stores. I just paid £6 from a B&Q store for 5 sheets. That's about 8 US dollars. So this tip is useful and I will be taking it up. Thanks!

@Mueiwark That is a sweet tip. Make a video and I will post it and link to your site. No gardening for me this summer. Texas is in a historic drought and it has been hot hot hot and we still have three months to go. I let my summer garden go a couple weeks ago. Just too brutal.

@Mueiwark Hello to you in Holland. I see I am not the only woodworker taking frugality to the limit. I also use a random orbit sanders 5". I have found I can cut 4 discs out of a standard sheet of sandpaper and stick them to my PSA pad with just a little spray adhesive. Makes for some cheap discs and the leftover pieces are great for hand sanding. I hope your farming is going well. This must be a very busy time for you.

@onlysirdave On my half sheet sander the grab is strictly mechanical from the lever action paper clamps. This allows me to use any brand of standard sheets and just cut them in half. I can't stand hook and loop. On my 5" random orbital I use 3m frecut gold that comes psa. I also make my own pads when needed by marking out four circles on a sheet of paper and cutting with scissors. There is just enough room. Then I use just a little 3m Super 77 on an old pad. I am really cheap :)

@askwoodman so what spray adhesive do you use Im sick of hook and loop and recently saw a psa pad with a hook and loop back so you can adapt and use your h/l sander as a psa also By the way keep up the kewl work and how about some more lathe work??

@deleetmeeh I use my belt sander belts on wood, then they get another life cutting metal. Belt sanding belts are also fantastic for lathe work. I just cut them at the seam and they are so thick and stout for rough sanding. They also tear nicely along the fabric line for great sanding strips. Thanks for writing. I like to hear from other people who are just as frugal as me. Makes me feel more "normal". Ha.

I love to recycle and I hate to throw anything away. But I am sad to say that I lack the organization skills that you have. My biggest problem is how to file all that stuff I don't want to throw out. Gotta get a system for storing loose ends, ha ha.
