CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Derek (Sean Patrick Thomas) tries to persuade Malakai (Fredro Starr) to give up his criminal life.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
In this romantic drama, two teenagers in love struggle to look past their differences. After the unexpected death of her mother, Sarah Johnson (Julia Stiles) moves to Chicago to live with her father. Knowing no one at her new school and not at home in a gritty, inner-city high school, Sarah has trouble adjusting, but she soon becomes friends with Derek (Sean Patrick Thomas), who has talent and street smarts but a checkered past. Sarah was an avid student of ballet before her mother's death sidelined her studies, while Derek has some serious hip-hop moves, and their mutual love of dance leads their friendship into something deeper. However, since Sarah is white and Derek is black, they have more to contend with than the average high school couple; Sarah gets static from Nikki (Bianca Lawson), Derek's former girlfriend, while Derek has to deal with his friend Malakai (Fredro Starr), who is still deep in the thug life Derek is trying to avoid. Malakai should have just listened to what Derek was trying to convince him not to do. Derek realized that Malakai had did Derek a favor for doing Derek's jail time over the liquor store robbery, and now Derek was intending to do Malakai a favor by saving Malakai from getting deeper into furthur trouble with the law. Derek understood what Malakai could be and what he is capable of, but Malakai does not have the confidence to walk away from being in the thug life.

Derek mention to Sara that he and Malakai broke into the liquor store and cracked open the cash register when they were young kids somebody had spotted them and called the police on them. They barely made it out of the store but the police rolled right on them so they both had split up and ran in different directions. Derek said he must have went in the wrong direction when the police were only closing in on him, but Malakai had created a diverson by smashing in car windows that sets the alarms off and the police had caught him and he not ratting out Derek to the police

True, but Malakai already had at least two strikes on him when he was released from juvenile prison. The judge gave Malakai a decision to either go back to school and finish your education or you can finish your sentence in the Juvenile Detention Center

Even though Derek was capable of having Malakai's support in a drive by shooting, but his sister, Chenille convinced him not to because Derek had a scholarship to go to Georgetown University and was destined at having a dream to become a doctor.

Derek realized what Malakai is capable of and could be an outstanding citizen if he had the confidence. Malakai cared about living the life of a thug and had to learn the hard way after his drive by shooting plan was botched and he got arrested and sent to jail

This is defeniteley the deal breaker in Malakai and Derek's friendship here Derek is trying to save his friend from getting in trouble and here goes Malakai trying to make him feel guilty for not wanting to get locked up for what they did with that liquor store robbery OK so Derek wanted to better his life and not deal with Malakai's bullshit that;s not Derek's fault Malakai should at least be lucky that he got someone like Dreek to look out for him and make sure he don't get in trouble for some bullshit that he don't even have no business doing to begin with and if Malakai was really a true friend he wouldn't be pressuring Derek to do something he knows is no good for him anyways

I admit when i was younger i use to hangout with someone who was like Malacai, I got involved in gangs and stuff I almost got in trouble with the law also. Then eventually I started going to church more often I turned my life around and chose to get out of that thug life because it's not for me and its dishonoring my family I also stayed in school. If I kept hanging out with the wrong people I would of been dead or in jail. So I'm glad I had the confidence to make some changes and be a better person than I was. I started surrounding myself with positive people who give me good encouragement.

I'm bitterly surprised that Debbie Allen had nothing to do with this movie. She is always involved with the acting, dancing type of movies or shows, and i'm a big fan of hers. If Debbie Allen had acted in or directed this movie it would've been that much better than it already is.

Actually it could be. Derek was into the same stuff as him when they were kids. As the years went by Derek changed but still was loyal to Malakai. My brother and his friend is the same way. My brother was into that gangbanging stuff at some point in his life then he started changing his life around to become something better. While his friend is still the same way. He is still good friends with him they just don’t see life the same way anymore.

Malakai didn't even have the heart to listen to what Derek was trying to convince him not to do. Derek had a change of heart when it came to having Malakai's support with the drive by shooting, but his sister Chenille realized it was about to be dangerous nonsense and begged him not to do it because Derek had that doctor scholarship to Georgetown University and suggested that Derek should just focus on his dream of becoming a doctor and leave Malakai alone at his mercy to just sink or swim on his own

@@lightheart5 All Malakai really cared about was being a thug and not wanting to do anything construtive with his life. Derek was really trying to save Malakai's life since Malakai had two strikes on himself when he got released from the juvenile prison, Derek was trying to tell Malakai that he needs to walk away from being in the gang lifestyle because it can only cost you two things being locked up in jail or losing your life to death. Malakai refused to listen to what Derek was trying to warn him not to do and now Malakai would have to live the rest of his life locked up in jail.

Malakai's longtime friendship with Derek is coming to an end because Derek is trying to get away from the criminal lifestyle his friend Malakai is still deep into. Derek and Malakai were both deep into the same criminal lifestyle as young kids, they both broke into a liquor store and opened up the cash register to steal money out of it. Somebody had spotted them and called the police, derek and malakai had to get out of the store as quickly as they can, but when they got outside the police had rolled up on both of them, so they decide to split up and run in different directions. Derek had a feeling he was going in the wrong direction that the police were about to close in on him, but his friend Malakai had created a diversion by smashing in some car windows that sets off the alarms, so the heat got turned from Derek to Malakai. Derek had gotten away and Malakai was the only one who was able to get caught.
