You are a lifesaver! I'm very grateful for the video. When I was done, everything worked. Whew!. I did note one discrepancy: my late 2011 15" Macbook Pro had T6 screws attaching the optical drive, not Phillips-head screws as described in the video. For people contemplating this, the Phillips-head screwdriver you need is a size 00. You can find acceptable quality Torx T-6 and 00 Phillips drivers at Ace Hardware for less than $5 each. Again, thank you!!

This is my 2nd time using this video. By far this is the best and only video I would use to disassemble and reconnect a keyboard. This is no easy job, but anyone who watches this video I believe can replace their keyboard. I know it can appear to be overwhelming, but believe me you can do it. You will need the proper tools. I have the ToolPlus 32-piece mobile phone repair tool set. It has all the proper screwdrivers, magnetic extension, and plyers, which you will need.

Thank you for great video. Very clear and concise instruction with zero fanboy yapping. My hat is off to you sir. My MBP Late 2011 would not power on. Tried a hard reset by disconnecting battery. It would come on with the battery connector, partially boot, and shut down. Thankfully, re-seating the keyboard and trackpad connector did the trick. I was ready to order a new kb and follow your video step by step. Was not looking forward to the 51 screws, lol. Thanks again.

Thanks so much you guys.. you are awesome! This is a great tutorial. Nice music and such a calming voice. I had reasonable success after spilling maybe 100ml or warm tea into my computer yesterday! Acted fast and flipped mac over immediately and then followed your guidance, glad I had the ipad handy. Motherboard and everything was dry and looked fine. I washed the removed keyboard and backlight layers in warm water, blew it out with compressor, then straight alcohol, blew it out again, then onto the heater for the afternoon. All worked for an hour after reassembly till a keyboard glitch occurred making the mac unusable. Now using her with keyboard disconnected and external keyboard and works good! I guess I am going to have to connect a makeshift on-switch to the power-on-pads and then try to re-seat the ribbon in a few days. Keys might need more drying. . Unless you can suggest anything else of course. Oh and by the way, if you had a paypal donate button on this page I would make use of it in appreciation. Thanks again.

In these cases unfortunately a keyboard replacement in the way to go. Just get one on ebay for $20 and put in the hour of work, will fix you up. The thing is, if you take out the keyboard and completely soak it and clean it and reassemble, there is no guarantee it will work again and so you will do the same job 3 times. Just get a tested working keyboard. Thank you for the donation comment, for now we only have a "Keep Us Going!" button at the bottom of our webpage www.appledollars.com Let us know how the replacement goes!

I will be attempting this soon I used your other video to remove the motherboard to redo the thermal paste and in the process I broke the ribbon cable for the trackpad totally my fault. Now the keyboard keys are very sluggish. I can't see why you need to remove the power button assembly it doesn't look like it is in the way of the keyboard but im glad you made such a high quality tutorial.

⚠️ NOTE FOR ALL: You MUST ensure that the new keyboard ribbon is FULLY in the keyboard ribbon socket on the motherboard! First time: only a few keys worked, second time: none. The third time I used a spudger to pressure the ribbon 'coil' so that it would spring 'into' the socket, and voila! It was only a difference of 0.25mm. 🙏🏽 Thank you so much @SaveAppleDollars for your video - my MacBook has many more years left! 👍🏼

It's likely that the LVDS connector is loose or the holster is damaged. This is the part where the LCD connects to the Logicboard. Unplug it and plug it back in then apply some light pressure with your finger onto the connector to make sure the pins all touch.

You can use the back light layers from the old keyboard if you want. You have to remove it to access the screws to remove the keyboard anyway so usually after a spill the liquid gets into the back light through the keyboard and so some lights on the back light don't work. You can keep the old back light layers if you want. Check out this video for more info kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rJqGatCelsCVo4E.html Good luck :)
@GRIBSOFT
@GRIBSOFT 8 жыл бұрын
Just a warning, the back light consists of three layers. First, thin black shadow layer with keyboard key holes (this layer concentrates light only to display on the key, then clear plastic layer that has little dots that intensify and illuminate the light, then the flat top black layer that has 5-7 LED light bulbs that go into the tight little holes on the plastic layer (This is the most important part of the setup, if the holes on the clear plastic layer don't alight with the black LED light layer properly, then the keyboard will not illuminate properly. Also, don't forget to plug the last backlight layer into the logic board after you are all don't putting the macbook back together, I still forget all the time and then think that I did something wrong :)

Yes, read this article and try to boot your system without the keyboard www.insidemylaptop.com/turn-on-macbook-pro-laptop-without-power-button-locating-power-on-pads/ then you will know that the keyboard is the issue. I would bet that either they keyboard you installed is bad or you need to reseat the ribbon cable. Good luck.

Did you connect the power adapter under the logicboard. Try reseating the keyboard ribbon cable several times.
@richardsobe9476
@richardsobe9476 7 жыл бұрын
When you took the power button out, there was a super skinny flat circular piece of metal, about the same size as the power button (about 1cm diameter). If that somehow fell out, it may cause your power button to not work. It's a springy type piece of metal that holds the power button up so it's not always depressed.
@agvs
@agvs 6 жыл бұрын
I had the same problem. Solution: you need to make sure that you open the “lock” of the keyboard connector (on your mother board), without this your buttons won’t work. Click the upper part to you softly and it will click open, put the keyboard connector in it and close the lock. You’re set to go.

I opened up my MacBook Pro 15" 2011 and replaced the thermal paste very carefully and correctly, whilst doing so I accidentally damaged the keyboard ribbon cable, but it's just a small scuff, now my keyboard and trackpad do not work, I am able too reset the smc and Pram with the keyboard, that tells me it works somewhat, but only my power button and backlight work when booted too OSX, could it just be the ribbon cable messed up and I need to just replace keyboard to regain keyboard and trackpad function? If you have any knowledge of what could be wrong, is greatly appreciate it. Thanks
@GRIBSOFT
@GRIBSOFT 7 жыл бұрын
Keyboards are cheap (pain to replace) so yes you can try replacing the keyboard. Not sure why the trackpad is not working, they are two different connection, make sure it's not trapped under the logic board and that you reconnected it correctly. Try reseating the keyboard ribbon, try all this while the unit is open and boot it up with out the cover. The keyboard is a tricky connection so again try reseating it several times, same goes for the trackpad. Also if you do order a keyboard once it arrives just open the macbook put it on the side and just connect the keyboard ribbon, I know it's an awkward position but testing the keyboard first before removing the logic board and the 52 screws that hold the keyboard in place might be a good idea that can save you a few hours. Also if all fails, remove the logic board and soak it in alcohol then brush it down with a toothbrush (every component) there might be some residue particles that are shorting a component preventing the keyboard from functioning, this is rare but has happened to some of my clients before. Good luck.

Sometimes some models don't have the same components on different years/manufactures of Apple boards. Are you 100% certain the component got scraped off? I really don't understand. No matter what I do I only have strip of lighting going down 7,Y,H, and N keys. The rest of the keys are dimly lit. I've purchased two different keyboards and backlights. Both behave the same way. I took it to a computer repair shop who couldn't install it right and still charged me $36 dollars. I've watched dozens of KZfaq videos. I don't get it. When I was first learning about the back light system I didn't understand it either. The keyboard and back light has to be replaced simultaneously and they have to be alighned properly, into the slots because the way light is distributed. Watch this video to get a better idea. +Save Apple Dollars The keyboard and back light came together. The three back light layers were already assembled. What else is there to do other than set the back light on the newly installed keyboard. Even though I have taken them apart and put them back together so I can figure out why that it didn't work in the first place. When I turn it on the clear plastic piece is very bright from one end to the other and all four lefs blow a greenish color.

Then just shift it around a bit. The lever is not an intricate part of the connection it just locks it in place, the keyboard should work without the lever.

Everything is going along great just watching the video then.... Remove the 51 Philips heads... Oh shit... Apple really must have a hard on for screws. Well, at least I know that keyboard ain't going to come off even if its dropped off the empire state building...

All I can say is I'm very thankful for magnetic Phillips screwdrivers. Took over an hour, but I did it.
