Those Galaxie's are way cool. I had a "63 500XL and a 63 1/2 Police Interceptor. 390 HIPO, 3 speed on the column WITH overdrive. At 80 mph, take your foot off the accelerator, mash it down, and voila, overdrive!! It's been my experience that Ford badged the 390 & 427 on the '63's upper front area of the front fender. The '64's were badged at the lower rear of the front fender. My 63 XL was a 352, two barrel, automatic, no badges. Changed it to a 390 HIPO with a four speed Ford toploader. I then changed the generator system to an alternator and got rid of the expansion tank (Kept blowing out the seams). Fast, Fun, Family cars! Ain't nothn' like American Muscle for torque! Good luck with this resto my friend!! God Bless

The carb on that FE looks to be a 4300 series Motorcraft 4bbl.. Do'nt think they came out to 67. Could have a swapped motor, or swapped carb at least. 59 till 64 were notorious "tail-draggers", thus the over-head shocks.

I was 15 y/o in 1964. I drove a 49 Plymouth on the gravel roads in southern Illinois. My Dad drove a 63 Mercury with a 352 in it and hated the engine. In the mid to late 60's the desired engines were 390's. Dad also had a 67 Fairlane with a 390 four barrel, dual exhaust, 2 door and it used more oil than gas, but it was a stump puller. Then 427's, 428's and 460's came along.

In 1984 I saw an ad for a 1964 Ford Galaxy with a 390 under the hood in the newspaper. The add said runs but it smokes. Transmission slips $50.00. I borrowed my boss's 1948 wrecker with a Merc Flathead, and picked up! I drug it down to the local rats place, Crawled underneath, pulled out the vacuum modulator and replaced it with a new one. with a fresh hose. I drug it to the shop, changed the oil and fired it up! It quit smoking in about five minutes! I drove that old Ford for ten years, and sold it for $3000.00!

Lovely old girl. Could give you a thorough account on this ride, as she's the cousin to mine, it being the family version of yours. Yours has the steel rims which mine lack but that's good news. Aftermarket steel rims won't take the dog dish hubcaps that I have. Sheet metal patch pieces are still made, as is a vast majority of many things your going to need. Save as much of the seats as possible and find a good upholstery shop to do them as the vinyl covers are very costly. Quite a few great books on restoring these, with factory reprints of all the OEM manuals as well as particular books on chassis and electrical systems. The placard near the hood hinge on the passenger side has the factory build codes stamped on it. Its an FE block, and only way to tell if its either a 352 or a 390 is to find the numbers near the motor mount. Its on a boss cast in the block right under the exhaust manifold.

The advertisement described as "from Canada" is actually from the UK. Canadian built cars were exported to British Commonwealth countries rather than US cars as the taxes and duties were much cheaper between Commonwealth nations. Australia would get Fords, and full size Pontiacs and Chevs (up to 1968) and others, in what were called knock down kits. Cars were manufactured in Canada, but final assembly was done in Australia, New Zealand or South Africa. The unique thing is all these cars were available in right hand drive. The '64 Galaxie was the first family car we had that I remember. My parents sold it around 1972 or 1973 for $300 to get some bedroom furniture for me when I was a kid. Wish I had the car instead. Énjoyed your video and thanks for saving it from the crusher.

Awesome find Brother! I had a neighbor, who back in 1963, she and her husband bought a brand new 4 door Galaxie. She kept it until she died about 10 years ago. It was the last vehicle she ever bought and owned. She actually drove it up until the early 2000's. I think it was a 292 car. Your 390 engine appears to have 300 HP. New, it looks to have done 0-60 in 7 seconds. Not bad at all!

In 1970 I bought a 1964 Ford Galaxie 500 XL with a 390 high performance engine, 2-door hardtop, bucket seats, leather interior, automatic in the floor with a wood-grain console, AC, and it got 10 miles per gallon, no matter how you drove it. It was a running machine! It would smoke the tires. It was originally maroon but had been repainted turquoise. One of my favorite cars.

Don't know why this showed up in my recommended videos but I am glad I watched it. My mom had a four door Galaxie 500, rode in it a lot when I was a kid, she finally got rid of it back in 1996, many memories of the distinct (To me, a kid that was born in '84) engine and the smell of the vehicle. Those old engines had a very distinct smell to them, it was intoxicatingly wonderful. The ride quality was good, I thought it was a lot more fun going somewhere in that old car than it ever was in the newer cars my dad drove,he traded his cars every three years or so.

From what I can remember I believe you have a replacement engine from a later car. The valve covers, color and carburetor are not a 1964. It might be a later 390. Research the engine number. Those were comfortable old boats not nearly as sporty as '63 and earlier. Good luck with this project.

@@Sleeperdude When you get it running, be advised the Cruise-O-Matic has a different Shift Quadrant than other Automatic Transmissions. It should be labeled P-R-N-D2-D1-L. Some of the Fords instead of D2-D1 will have a White Dot for D2 and a White Dot surrounded by a Green Circle. When in D2, the transmission will always start in Second Gear and as this is the first position after Neutral, Non-Ford Owners and those who didn't read the owner's manual would always say the Fords were a DOG. If they would have pulled the shift lever down into D1 the transmission will start in First Gear and progress up through second and then into Third. To go from Neutral to D1 you just pull down on the shift lever until it stops naturally in D1, to go into Low or Reverse, the lever has to be pulled back towards the driver and then down or up to either L or R position. On my 64 500XL with the Floor Shifter, you pushed the Button on the top of the shift lever when selecting the L & R positions as well as Park. Good Lord ,my 64 Galaxie 500 XL Convertible and my 75 Scout II are the only two cars I am sorry I still don't have.

@@Sundancer268 IIRC all Ford slushboxes were called "Cruise-O-Matic"; C3, C4, C6 and FMX. What you're referring to was the optional "Select-O-Shift". How those worked varied by trans and year, for instance the 66 Select-O-Shift C4 had a green "2" which was second gear only, while the 66 Select-O-Shift C6 with a green 2 would shift 1-2 from start if placed in "2". Ford did some weird things through the 60's and 70's which neither make sense nor were well documented, and some of those (like small-block steam holes in the heads) can leave the average car nut baffled with 'unfixable' problems which a true Ford nut knows about. BTW, the "Select-O-Shift" version you refer to was to increase fuel mileage, while the 66 C4 version I mentioned was intended to allow you better slip-free starts on icy roads.
