Four years sober now after over 30 years of alcoholic drinking. I dont miss the pain and misery .

Ed's stay at the Priory Hospital at Roehampton worked. Ed went on to write a best-selling book about his experiences 'From Headlines to Hard Times', a detailed record of life in a dark place. Ed has apparently since relapsed, but has managed to remain more sober than not.

Alcoholism isn't a joke. I was one for about 25 years. A very heavy drinker. I couldn't do anything without a drink. I woke up one day and just didn't go to the fridge. I hadn't realized that that was a huge step. I made it through the day and I figured I'd try and see if I could do 2 days. I did it. The rest is history. I'm not sure what happened, but I'm glad it did and I know I'm lucky. I didn't give up alcohol, but it no longer has a hold of me. I just drink when I feel like it and I rarely feel like it anymore. It's not my best friend anymore. I can drink 1 beer and stop. All the years that alcohol was my buddy, my buddy who loved to see me get in trouble and do stupid things constantly is barely an acquaintance anymore in my life. I don't need it anymore and rarely even want it anymore.

Ed is still alive and doing well. Carol Barnes died shortly after filming this from a stroke. Life is very odd sometimes.

All we can hope for Ed is that he takes it one day at a time. We wish you well Ed. Thank you for sharing your story.

Remembered Ed at ITN, also at TVC in studio N2 for the BBC Business Breakfast, he was an outstanding presenter.

He didn't look like the alcoholic we imagine....rotten complection...smelly...bedraggled. He remained a gentleman from what I can ascertain from this documentary. Strangely he seemed to become even more handsome and distinguished with age despite his destructive lifestyle. I'm glad to see hes sober now and wish him endless good health happiness and wealth for many years to come

watching this now "in the future" it's good to know that he got better! there's hope for everyone. but i think he never looked like a horrible drunk, he looked surprisingly good for someone who heavily abused alcohol for years.

in a strange way, KZfaq saves me from the booze. All these documentaries about alcoholism is enough to keep you on the straight and narrow.

Unless a person has experienced an addiction, he/she can never understand why someone abuses drugs/alcohol. Often the abuser doesn't know why. It's a very complex and frustrating issue. My late father drank himself into the grave. Then, my younger brother was well on his way to an early grave abusing alcohol and prescription medications, until he started having run-ins with the law.

I`ve always watched the European Business Channel on SKY in the late 80s although I was only in my mid teens. Really liked this guy. So sad what`s happened to him. Hope he`s better now. Wish him the best.

He was able to go from riches to rags and back to success bc ppl were willing to give him a chance. Imagine if everyone that cld help actually gave a homeless person the helping hand they needed. Obvi some ppl on the street dont really want to change but many do. Its hard to get a job with no address. With no job there's no shelter, food, clothing. Everyone shld keep this in mind the next time they're hiring. You cld be passing on the best person bc you judged their sitch. Maybe, head to local homeless shelter to post your job opening

The tragedy of Alcoholism. So sad.

My wife is an advanced alcoholic. The one thing you can't get help for, is an alcoholic in denial. All I can do is pay her bills and wait for the end.. At least this guy is honest about it. He knows he'll be dead soon and he doesn't seem too bothered... My wife lives in her own shite and looks like a vagrant. What can you do when someone simply doesn't give a toss about anything except drinking. Family, friends, all gone..

In this world we all have struggles, each of us individually. There is more out there than just this life and you must stay focused on the prize at the end. I currently deal with alcoholism, i have moments of clarity but its not enough to get me out of the cycle. Every day i fight but i always succumb to my vices.

Amazing that even living rough he managed to keep himself so clean , smart and tidy ! . Does anybody know if he succeeded and stayed alcohol free ? .

For someone who spent a long time on the streets, fucked his Wife off, lost jobs, lost houses, I find it hard to accept his silly immature humour. It's his Wife and family who paid the price for him drinking. I understand that he had a disease but it was them that had the diagnosis. Like any addition, it's a matter of choice, and he chose that path and what is sad is that those addicts take their families with them on their journey. We all have addictions but we have to put them in a box where they belong so we can operate on a daily basis. I know it sounds harsh but having known an addict who absolutely ruined his life, his family's lives forever and it's unforgivable.

And to think Carol Barnes died six months after this was filmed from a stroke.

The cynic in me finds it hard to look at needlessly vérité-style docs like these without questioning the true motives of the producers and presenters. There are very few documentary film makers whose presence on camera aids the finished production. Plus, if the focus is supposed to be on the subject, time spent on presenters is surely pulling that focus. There isn't just a single shot dedicated to the presenter, in some situations it's a dedicated camera.

I do think that some people have something in their biology that makes them have the stamina to keep drinking, I'm 46 and no matter how many times a week I've gone out in the past I've never been addicted or had a craving for it,I've not had any alcohol for over a year,not for any reason but just because of the first lockdown coz of c vid and I didn't go back once they opened

Why did the film not focus on his gambling? Earning that kind of money, alcohol could not have cost all his income. Gambling must have taken most. Gambling is more harmful than alcohol.

It's great that he got that offer of recovery. However he was clearly a privaliged man to begin with. And private support from the priory with the garaunteed job at the end of it, would probably be a better fit for someone who had little to begin with

I haven't got a lot of sympathy, and I'm somebody that had a severe drink problem for about 18 months which landed me with a very serious neurological condition, and if I hadn't stopped drinking about 8 months ago (prescribed medication were used by my alcohol team; that I had vitally ENGAGED with) there's a strong chance that I'd be in a care home now or: DEAD (And,that is NOT an exaggeration; and woe betide any fuc*er that 'comes at me' on here and says It IS. take that VERY seriously, before you 'Keyboard warrior' at ME, given what I've overcome) Now, what I had/what one MUST have to break through here is Bollocks, and mine were and are: HUGE. Mitchell should NEVER have reached the bare desperation levels that he did based on what he HAD and what he has worked so HARD to HAVE, even HAD. He is recovered today, however, and I'm thrilled for him. Had he been my brother though, I'd have given him the support and also the 'kick up the arse,' that he needed earlier. He should have displayed the bollocks that I did much EARLIER, than he did. This is erudite, and grammatically perfect (I've even spelled grammatically correctly: Twice, look!) and 8 months ago, I couldn't even SEE sufficiently, due to my, Nystagmus (involuntary bilateral eye movement, cause by severe Vitamin B deficiency) to enable me to even TYPE all of this. SO #innerstrengthonlyYOUcandoitmate. So, don't piss about, and get OFF the piss lively! x

Wondered what happened to carol Barnes...her daughter died in 2004 she was stopped being a magistrate because of a drink driving conviction not long after her daughter died..whilst she was dying in hospital her home was burgled...I do remember carol Barnes when I was a kid from the late 70s on ITN news...also ed he was always the let's go to ed live in Tel Aviv,bloke....

Ed has that dark alcoholic look about him , what a disater for him .. maybe the pressure of his career was too much for him , he wasnt able to cope. His poor wife and childen ,he had it all and lost it .. Very sad.
