Taken from the subscription concert of the NHK Symphony Orchestra in 1990. Wolfgang Sawallisch conducted the entire cycle of Ma Vlast. The guest timpanist was again Peter Sondermann, a former member of the Staatskapelle Dresden

This symphonical poem is not very known, "Vltava" is much more. But my music teacher says this is the best Smetana's poem. She said Smetana also thought this is the best one. Every tone has its meaning - read the story "The Girls' War" from Old Czech Myths by Alois Jirásek. Women fight against men, and one of the them, Šárka, shall prepare a trick for the men - she is held to a tree and she plays she was assaulted. The men, with their leader, Zdislav, "set her free". She drunks with them,

Beside Vltava this is my most favorite part of Má vlast (My Country).

Es gibt heute gar keine Dirigenten mehr.

I agree: no more like him. He had a tremendous amount of knowledge and abilities, a perfect baton technique and absolute musicianship. Was able to take conferences in diverse tongues and was a gifted pianist. Every concert of him I attended was a fulfillment of perfection and beauty; last but not least, a humble and kind man. I had occasion, as a student, to attend a rehearsal of him and then to meet and talk with Sawallisch, deeply admiring his kindness and the sincere love for music I felt in his words. Really missed.

I totally agree with you. He was a great musician, and such a nice person! I miss him very much. Nowadays there is no conductor to admire...

Samozřejmě, promiň, vyprávím hlouposti... :-)) Correction: it was "Ctirad", not "Zdislav". Thanks to kykla01 for the correction.

they are drunk and fall asleep. But Šárka got she fell in love with Zdislav. If you are going to read the story and you don't want to know the end, stop reading... :-) She is not sure if she shall call the women and let to kill Zdislav. Then, she decide she shall. She use the hunting-horn to call them, they come and kill all sleeping men, including Zdislav. This is the end and it's all in this symphonical poem, too. Czechs have an exciting mythology, don't they? :-)
