This was on the first LP I ever bought - 1812 and other overtures with Nicolai Malko and the Philharmonia Orchestra. Some of these 'other overtures', including this one, seem to have fallen into almost obscurity. What a shame! Great performance of an exciting piece. Thank you so much for sharing.

Yes, perfect tempi. Neither rushed nor excessively leisurely where appropriate

Just before and up to 0:35 something very important occurs (Savanoff style switch!)…… this is the best conducting I’ve seen in a while. Conductor and orchestra are one entity… P.S……Savanov (alternate spelling) is in my musical lineage!

This is also one of my favorite transcriptions for symphonic band. I have conducted this piece many times,. It has never failed to excite players and audience alike. It's' what we call a 'War Horse" in the business. When I taught HS, it was on my revolving literature list. This assured that every student I taught got to play it. It's fun, technically challenging and most importantly teaches LYRICISM!! The final element so important , and yet seemingly ignored by so many contemporary composers.

I love these old 'warhorses' - overtures like 'Poet and Peasant', 'Mignon', 'Light Cavalry', 'Oberon', 'Merry Wives of Windsor' - all ignored by musical snobs, but gems in their own right.

Absolutely agree. They are so well orchestrated and full of unrestrained high spirits and virtuosity.

Was this an encore? If so what a lucky audience. I just wish I could have been there. Indeed rare repertoire for Maestro Sawallisch but just look at his expression and how he enjoys conducting this. A real treasure. Thank you for this posting.

I sure love this principal clarinetist, apart that some of the throat and lower tones were hard to hear, but that might have been something to do with mic'ing, hard to say if you weren't there. But all in clarino and altissimo very clear and nice ring, good line and nuance.

it's fascinating - and distressing - why a such a good composer just drifted off into obscurity .... with just the one overture from dozens of operas surviving in the mainstream repertoire .... What was it ? bad timing ? out of fashion style? wrong country ? ..... and an early death .... heartbreaking ...

Umožňuje to lepší, naléhavější výraz.
