This wood turner was drooling all over the screen all the way through this video. I SO hope all that every last scrap of that beautifully figured maple gets into the hands of some talented workers of wood. All those “heal over” areas, crotch feather, and burls were absolutely fantastic!

Because the shape is so awkward and there are so many defects unless he plans on making a bunch of epoxy tables I just don't see the value in milling it into 10/4 slabs. Personally I think it would of been better utilized by milling it thicker and breaking it down into turning blanks for larger bowls and such.

The 3 color spectrums of the bark inclusions, stained/spalted, and the almost white make for extremely aesthetic slabs, and then they are pretty much 100% figured wood throughout to top it off. AND its hard maple, those are pretty phenomenal.

So often this type of log would just be rolled off to the side in a dump, or burned as firewood. Nice to see it being turned into beautiful projects.

I do tree service in upstate ny and I made a sawmill as well because I hate wasteing wood. Wood has value. It gets firewooded or milled.

I've never seen such a variety of figure in a single slab. I wasn't able to get a true appreciation for the size until they were stood up against the building. Thanks for sharing this with us.

Some years ago when I was in the logging business we would leave stuff like this in the woods as junk. Literally tons and tons of it. Now this stuff is making slabs worth more than the lumber we milled from the butt log. If only I knew then what i know now.

Logging is a job harvesting timber. This type of wood has no value there. This wood has other value that loggers don’t get payed for. I’m guilty also. Literally tons and tons of beech yellow birch sugar maple red oak locust tamarack list goes on. Over the bank. These days I do tree service. I got a sawmill and I mill in the fall before winter.

26 minutes in, I think probably 10 cuts at 10/2 or 12/2 and they aren't even half way through the log. That's a HUGE piece of wood. Also, how in the world did you create the concept of a destination sawmill? It's like Field of Dreams almost. You built the sawmill, and suddenly the wood now comes to you.

What a beautiful salvaged trunk. I pleased you are able to salvage such a noble tree and repurpose it. That timber is going be great when it's finished and epoxy treated . I WOULD LIKE TO SEE THE REST OF HIS TREE WHEN ITS CUT.

That last slab would make a fantastic dining room table in a formal dining room. I've seen smaller ones that didn't look that good sell for $30,000.00

Matched set of bass, rhythm, and lead guitar. Doors, Butcher block, Tables. Smaller round off cuts can be turned. Nice way to salvage a record tree at the end of its life. Hope there are clones & seedlings growing in the proper zone. Some of the most awesome maple slabs ever. Thanks for folks taking these trunks to be used.

I recently moved from TX to Western MA. I got here too late in the fall to see leaves on the trees, but I think I have figured out which ones are which. I have been wondering what these huge, warped sugar maples that look to be on death's door would look like inside (just curious). And here is this video in my YT feed this morning. So thank you!

Making a M/chn big enough to handle these wonderful old trunks, was a great idea to start with Matthew. I guess folk with the bigger Tree's & Trunk's & stuff have only a few options. I'm a Fender Telecaster guitar fan- & this tree has the stuff of dreams. Great Vid Great post .

Hey matt. You should consider mounting a motor to replace the hand crank! Seems like it would give you a more consistent cutting speed... and 0 hand cranking.. Hook up a controller and you could even step a good ways away from the machine to avoid getting whipped by a broken blade, and view it from different angles as you cut! Love the content! what a monster of a log!

Hey Matt, is there something special about "hand cranking" the lumber you cut on your sawmill ? I've been watching you for over a year now and that's how you've always done it !! Don't you think it's time to upgrade to an electric drive ?
