Figuring out how to justify the expense of good quality equipment is a numbers game for business owners. Today I'll talk about the number of cords of firewood it would take to buy the Eastonmade Axis that I use to split firewood. The number may surprise you.

I'm glad that you specified that you were talking about a full cord of wood. So many times I've heard the term a cord of wood when they meant face cord and that's a big difference. I used to help cut and split a lot of wood for friends and family it's a lot of work but what a great workout, I didn't always have a splitter to use and used an axe the good old fashioned way but that was a long time ago. Still like helping my son do it though I just don't have to work as hard now days.

The fact that most equipment retains its value is something that took me a while to understand and take into account when buying equipment for personal use. Would sure love to have that splitter but since I burn only a full cord per year of hardwood from my own property, I think it’s not all that useful to go all out, that is because my body can still take the workload.

I get asked all the time about why I bother to cut and split wood instead of just buying more gas or heating oil. When my neighbor is done heating his house after 10 years he has a pile of cancelled checks that he sent to his heating oil dealer. After 10 years, if I were to quit, I’d have a tractor, splitter, 2 chainsaws, and too many other tools to mention here that could all be liquidated. As you have said, this equipment holds its value very well if cared for properly. Side benefit- no need for a gym membership! Thanks for sharing your experiences.

Great number crunching! I remember offering my grampa $3500 for an old Massey 35 he had sitting around his property....15min later when he stopped laughing he said thatvwas more than what he paid for it, and it was probably only worth $200...😁 We often forget that good equipment doesnt depreciate much,and as you said, sometimes it appreciates!! Hello Mr. Sandy, one thing I look at ,from the point as a consumer of my own wood, doing all the work myself, that helps me justify many things I buy, ..is what I would have to pay to obtain the wood if I were to buy it from you, it is going to cost me the same to buy logs, splitter price is the same, but the ''profit'' money stays in my pocket, then buy doing this work, I am also not buying any or not much electric or propane to heat my house, which there is a hefty profit margin for the company I would have to buy from, so that money stays in my pocket too.

Many valuable points there, Sandy. With regard to doing it for money, though, you need to factor your labor (hours) into that $120.00 profit. Hypothetically speaking, if it took ten hours to split, you're now working for ten dollars an hour. The 'pleasure factor' can offset that to some degree, but when you have to work at it 'X' number of hours per day to pay for itself before it starts paying you, now you're compelled to work at it whether you want to or not. Regarding expensive equipment... change that to well built equipment; it might not be the most expensive, but if it meets all your projected needs. My 30-year-old Dodge Ram 2500 w/ Cummins diesel is in better shape and appearance today, than the day I took delivery. (With 145,000 miles on it now, I might have to change out that break-in oil one of these days though. LOL). My (10" belt drive) table saw is 50+ years old and it still cuts true. My shaper is older than I am. I have tools from Harbor Freight that are inexpensive, but in many cases I bought them for one job. After that, I figured they were paid for and all the use I've had with them since is pure gravy. (I also maintain them. Having that ability also helps pay for them). You said it though... "You get what you pay for...." My milling machine and lathe are not ultra expensive and lack DRO, so I saved several hundred and developed expertise with measuring tools (which I needed in the shop anyway).

Lots of good equipment by the sounds of it Carl! That truck sounds real nice as well. I figure with so much variability to the labour I would leave that off for others to fill in with their time if they’re putting a number on it.

One thing I would enjoy knowing is... how good is the market for firewood? Is it a good idea in your area to sell firewood in your area. Most cords of wood here go for about four hundred a cord delivered
@sawingwithsandy
@sawingwithsandy 4 ай бұрын
Good question. Wood sells very easily here and logs are readily available from many different logging operators
@crazyman3157
@crazyman3157 3 ай бұрын
I do agree, in my area, a cord of firewood goes for $150 to $200, firewood bundles (.75 to 1.00 cubic foot) go for $6 to $8 per bundle. Now at $400 a cord I would say you at]re in a good market to sell firewood. Set at $400 a cord, free delivery for anything under 20 miles, and then charge per mile over 20 and you could be in a good market. Get the size splits people want, good and dry wood (less than 20% moisture) and see what happens. Get a good reputation going and word gets out. Never hurts to try small, feel the market out, and grow or not from there. Just my 2 cents. 👍🏻
@mcaber
@mcaber Ай бұрын
Taking into consideration all the thinning you soon will have to do, you will have a lot of wood not suitable for the mill. But you could make firewood out if it. However, the chainsaw and this splitter is too slow. Wood processors from Palax would be a good choice. But you need a stronger tractor to run it, and the one you already have with a front loader. Buying these maybe is too expensive but I am pretty sure you can rent them, with or without chauffeur. Sell your logs to the logger and have him to take out all remaing wood he isn't going to use. Then hire a contractor to make firewood with a processor.

2 part question: Is the Axis easier on your body than the Ultra? If you had to move your splitter around the woodyard, would you still like the Axis best?
@sawingwithsandy
@sawingwithsandy 4 ай бұрын
Good questions. Both the axis and ultra were easy on my body with their upright position and good working height. Due to the weight differences the ultra is easier to move around more often if you don't have access to heavy equipment but with the tractor either can be moved easily. One thing about the Ultra however is that the hitch can be put on either end of the splitter whereas the Axis has the hitch only on the engine side with fork pockets on the opposite side.

In Florida, if a person burned 1 cord of firewood per year, I would be surprised. If I could find 5 customers, it would take 30 years for me to pay for the axis. Bundle firewood is the market down here for the people who have fireplaces. It's more for nostalgia than necessity. If it's cold enough, one or two fires a year (Thanksgiving and Christmas) is about it.

I like $$ numbers, but you need to make some more calculations for those that want to do this for a living as in ONLY income... Like when your profit is $120.00/full cord, how long does it take in man hrs to process 7 cord? How much cornflakes, coffee, hotdogs does it take to process 7 cord? Then then theres the cost of living week to week like electric bills, car payment, insurance, in other words at $120.00/cord, it seems to me that to afford a big expense like that wood splitter, along with cost of living, one would need to produce 3 full cord every day, and thats if nothing breaks down, then you have delivery time or cost of hiring that out.... But for me I'd be lucky to produce 2 full cord/day, coarse being almost 70 dont help....... So can you answer me this, if I sell a cord of firewood for $1,8000.00, how many cord do I need to sell to buy this splitter?????? PS Good video!!!!!!

Firewood processors are nice for sure but I don't think they're in my price range with the operation size I have.

about 600hrs to start making profit on axis? 4 hrs per cord ,producing, storing, loading ,delivering. im personally not a fan of that type of money on woodsplitters and i wont take wood to sell unless im paid to take the wood via my tree service. but due respect the risk you guys buying them are taking. its important to remember that these youtube guys also get paid by youtube, take that into account before jumping in. know your gonna read sandy but comment is intened for the readers not you. thanks for the videos.

That’s crazy. And you did not include your time doing it. You are not making $5.00 an hour. 😂
