After nearly 5 years of #woodworking , there is finally a Tablesaw in the Fixit Fingers #workshop ! I reached out to ‪@CarbatecTheHomeOfWoodworking‬ to pre-order the 10" Saw Stop CTS (Compact Table Saw) the moment I saw its release video as finally there was a safety saw that was small enough to fit in my tiny garage workshop. Low and behold we got chatting, and they were kind enough to supply me with the unit to see what I think of it. Here is my unboxing, initial thoughts and how I set up the table saw for its first cut. This has to be the best table saw of its class out right now and the cheapest portable table saw too that won't cut off your fingers.

G'day Jesper. I am super excited and very grateful for the deal with Carbatec. While this little saw probably won't be the best option for your proper sized workshop, the good news for Europeans with small workshops is there is no reason why this model can't be released in the UK and EU. My understanding is that usually, the ability to add a dado that requires removing the riving knife means they do not meet EU safety standards (ironic on the safest table saw in the world). As this model can not physically take a dado, hopefully it will see an EU release. I couldn't find any info on this, but that is my prediction.

Awesome score mate! Just a tip with blade height. Make sure the full gullet on the blade is above the top of the timber you are cutting. The gullet not only takes sawdust away from the cut on exit, but it also takes cool air into the cut on entry. This helps cool the cut, keeping your blade sharper for longer. You won’t look back now mate. You’ll wonder how you got by without a tablesaw 😂

Hey James, congratulations on the table saw. I've been waiting a bit to watch and comment because what I wanted to know is what do you think after a while of using it comparing to the years without it. As I'm in a similar place like you, also I try to justify the use of each tool I buy I feel sometimes I haven't yet explored all the abilities of the circular saw (for instances I still have to build the rip jigs from your videos :D ). Thanks for the video and the Jesper inspired intro.
@FixitFingers
@FixitFingers Жыл бұрын
Hahaha that intro took longer than the rest of the video. The saw I can't fault, it is everything I'd expect. However, as you have suggested, I don't find I use it as much as I'd probably have expected. I still find I go to the Accu-cut for big pieces and Mitre saw for cross cuts. However, it has opened a world of ripping and resawing I simply couldn't do without much fuss before. Once I get it built into a bench and make some sleds, I am sure it will be used even more often. I still don't think I _need_ a table saw... but you could say the same with most tools. I am glad I have it :)

His advice is from someone who has never owned a table saw. Don't go a saw stop they're very expensive and you having to worry about spending hundreds for hitting a nail and setting off the safety feature which is overkill. It's a tool like any other, Use it safely and you'll be fine
@FixitFingers
@FixitFingers Жыл бұрын
G'day Nobby, I appreciate the counter point of view, it is good for people to get different perspectives. While it is true they are expensive, this saw compared to the leading DeWalt in the same class is only AUD$270 more, a small price to pay for something that could stop a permanent life-changing injury. You can turn off the safety if you are cutting reclaimed wood and you think there may be metal in there, and hidden nails/staples should not even set the brake off (current interruption for a small nail that is fully embedded in insulating wood is very different to a human body, the brake probably won't fire). You can of course get a little Ryobi or something _much_ cheaper, but then you won't match the power, accuracy or build quality. It's good to have options :)
@FixitFingers
@FixitFingers Жыл бұрын
Cheers RWC! I'll let you know if I find any issues with it after a few months of use. But as you are not only paying for the patented safety feature but also the build quality when you get a SawStop I don't think there will be many unexpected things go wrong.
@samsboringchannel
@samsboringchannel Жыл бұрын
I'm absolutely stoked for you mate!! Awesome, what a game changer to the fixit Fingers space! Had me a bit worried when you bought a replacement brake, hope you never have to use it haha!! That bevel adjustment is next level, as much as I love my dewalt, the bevel adjustment is heavy, clunky and far from precise. I found that with all of them so was happy to compromise, however if this saw was available when I was shopping for mine, with the micro adjustment I'd have gone this way. Do you know if the cabinet saws are just as adjustable? I've not watched any videos on the big ones so I don't get saw envy haha
@FixitFingers
@FixitFingers Жыл бұрын
The extra brake is so if you do activate the safety stop, you can get back to work within a few minutes as the machine won't run without one. The course bevel movement is so fast, but you really do need to double check and use the angle finder every time you move it to ensure it's gone back to 90. I'm sure the cabinet saws are even smoother and more accurate but I honestly don't know if they have that fast adjust (probably a construction saw thing where speed trumps accuracy)
@samsboringchannel
@samsboringchannel Жыл бұрын
@@FixitFingers makes sense to me mate, of course with both wet timber and metal setting it off you don't want excessive down time. I always use my angle finder but it takes a few minutes to get just right some times and that micro adjustment looks the bizzo! Looking forward to your first build!

@FixitFingers Жыл бұрын

So if you use a metal L square.. I assume the machine must be off so that you dont trip the brake? I did read that it can cut through nails/staples without triggering.. I hope that's true though I have never cut thru nails with any saw. But IF it should happen I would hate to toss $200+ for the blade and brake system. But using the SETUP metal thingys (the ones that come on multiple mm/inch heights to adjust the height of saw).. not sure if brake system only works/activates IF the blade is turning? I'd hate to think you could be using a long metal ruler or something else, accidentally touch blade and have it trip the brake.

Yep so the break system is only live while the blade is moving. So you can use metal measuring tool to setup no worries as it doesn't kick in until you pull the big go button. However, it stays live after you turn it off for a few seconds during wind down so you need to let it come to a complete stop (there are lights next to the switch to tell you if the brake system is live). I've not hit any metal yet, but yes, you _should_ be able to go through staples and small nails as if they are completely surrounded by wood, they won't ground and don't have enough mass to trigger the current switch. If you are cutting metal or you are very suspicious of the wood you are cutting, you can temporarily override the brake so it wont fire off. Same with wet wood, before you cut, you can hold the wood up against the stationary blade. If the brake light starts flashing, it is wet enough to conduct and you need to let it dry or put it in override mode :) Hope that helps.

@@FixitFingers Oh that is cool.. I thought I saw someone do that somewhere.. maybe you did.. cant remember. But I did see some various lights. I thought maybe you had to bypass then cut and notice if the lights were going off. But very cool you can do it while blade is stopped and it will tell you. I assume then while stopped.. if you touch it with metal or your fingers it will show the light that indicates it would trip if it were spinning

@@b3owu1f exactly! I should have filmed that. Yes, if you touch the blade while stationary the lights go bonkers and start flashing super fast. It also wont start I believe if the lights are already flashing

Is the actual table top flat? I know my DW745 had a sag in the middle which meant when the blade was set to 90 it was actually cutting at 89 degrees. Apparently it's a known issue with the pressed metal tops. Nothing a few good whacks with a block of timber and a mallet couldn't fix thanks to the advice from Ohyo56: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Y8B9gcejm6_Hiqs.html

Not perfectly! Using the digital angle finder I have gotten different readings in different places around the table. Only ever a tiny shift, but definitely not perfectly flat. It's the trade off vor weight vs a nice solid bit of cast iron I suppose. Thanks for the 'fix' link, I'll check it out!

I think quietly shitting bricks when you use a table saw shows that you have a "regular" sense of self-preservation.

Hahaha... I just read 'shitting bricks' and assumed this was a comment on the Lego based build video I just published 🤣 But yes, even though it _shouldn't_ cut a digit off, kick back is still demanding respect!

i am kind of a person who either goes cheap (but with ok quality) or goes high end (expensive...). in this case, the cheapest ozito has no review, the second cheapest ozito has bad reviews. So between this CTS and the dewalt 7485 ("only" $863).. thanks for the video. I have finally made my decision. Now just need to wait for a good deal.

I held off buying the DeWalt so many times over the years. I would come on sale and I _nearly_ pulled the trigger a few times. So glad I waited! The DeWalt is a great little saw, but if you are already spending that much, the few hundred extra for the SawStop was a no brainer for me. Enjoy it!
