3:32 The notes are A# A# F# G# repeating (alto pitch) but Baptiste fingered the second A# as middle D# and overblows it I think

Can you make a video about how you developed your classical tone vs your tone for jazz and how you switch between the two? Your tone is so different depending on what you’re playing. When I work on my tone for jazz playing it always affects my tone for classical playing. I want to learn how to switch it the way you do.

Personally i just kinda separated the two in my mind. I associate a different embouchure with each style of music and i usually choose to practice one or the other at a time but don’t take my word for anything i have no idea what im doing sometimes

Hey, Nathan! As a Brazilian and Baptiste's fan I couldn't be happier to see you sharing more videos of him playing with Nelson Faria (one of my country's best guitar players). "Um Café Lá em Casa" is a great interview/jam session youtube channel hosted by Nelson himself and Brazil's finest musicians. However, I need to emphasize the importance of Idriss Boudrioua, the other alto player on the video. France born and Rio de Janeiro based, Idriss is one of the most influential saxophone players of Brazil, inspiring thousands of jazz musicians with his huge melodic and harmonic knowledge. That's why he was invited for the show and not Baptiste (who was there to watch the interview and occasionally jammed with Nelson and Idriss). I highly recommend you to listen to his albums, especially the "Base and Brass" ones, that features spectacular big band arrangements written by Idriss himself. Also, B&B III contains mindblowing solos from Baptiste. Anyway, great video!

Adoro como as pessoas sempre surpreendem com os músicos do Brasil. A emoção sempre é de um universo novo, e digo a todos, escutem música brasileira de todos os gêneros e verá que há uma nova forma de expressão no ar. Principalmente no ritmo, as síncopes no Brasil dançam.

Thanks for the theory breakdown at the beginning. To my ear the first part of this lick sounds like Donna Lee transitioning into the end of the first phrase of Just Friends, so it was cool to see you quoted Just Friends at 2:27. I’ll defer to the others explanations of the false fingering/overtone thing at 3:33, but in addition to Pharaoh Sanders it was also something Michael Brecker would do as well as later John Coltrane (in his free-er albums like Interstellar Space). Thanks again, this video is up there with the Kazuki Katsuta Mario Kart lick to me and I appreciate you transcribing it and sharing your process - it makes learning and practicing it more accessible to the rest of us! :)

Dude, this vid was particularly goofy and good - even by your standard :D At 3.33ish he's doing false fingerings and some overtone shenanigans, I think. It's a great session, Baptiste also takes an insane solo on All the things you are with some spicy licks.

I have a deficiency in connecting ANYTHING together. 20+ years of playing and I'm nowhere near your level. Transcription is too hard for me because I can hear the notes but I'm bad at rhythms. And I can't sightread music very well because I don't have the mental capacity to read ahead and, despite my best efforts, there are too many pauses and hiccups while my brain tries to catch up and process what I just looked at.

3:34 sounds like he’s repeating the melody to Miles Davis’ “Four” and then fluttering the F, F#, and D keys without pressing the G key. Essentially you are trilling F, E, and D, minus the G key.

Were you ever able to figure out the soft palate issue or it's just something to deal with now?
@Saxologic
@Saxologic 10 ай бұрын
I still struggle with it but it helps that I stopped using a double lip embouchure! My friend who also has the issue went to the doctor and they found that he is lacking adenoid tissue in his throat, which helps support a seal for his soft palate. I am just going to guess that I have this issue too. Whenever I am feeling it, I just take a break from the horn. Every time I play, I am making sure my airstream is used more optimally so it’s not building so much back-pressure in my mouth. It seems to be getting better and better as time goes on - just have to really listen to my body.

I've found that sometimes the overblown palm E fingring for C# can be squirrely. Maybe you could try octave key, X and 4 for C#?
@drsax2
@drsax2 10 ай бұрын
I think for the false fingering lick, he’s playing F#, G#, Bis Bb then fingering a middle D# and over blowing for the BB false fingering. For the altissimo G# - F# that you were having some trouble with, try 1-3 and 1 for the F#. Then it’s easy to go back and forth between the two.
