This was an eye opening video. The upper register being sharp and the lower register being flat is something I've been struggling with and I've always thought this was solely due to poor embouchure. I'll certainly be testing out different voicings using just the mouthpiece tomorrow. I also didn't realize that dramatic changes in pitch like you demonstrated at around 6:20 was due to the tongue position!

Thanks man, I assure you that this amazing video is the only one on the whole web that finally explains how to get a good voicing. There are thousands of useless videos that only confuse ideas, you went practically, straight to the point, with incredible effectiveness. I really hope you keep posting video lessons like this one. Thank you very much.

Something I’m actually doing correct. Will wonders ever cease? 😂 Being self taught through the university of KZfaq, one begins to wonder. I used my mouthpiece only and it pitched F# consistently. I also love doing overtones and will spend too much time with those if given a chance so maybe that helps as well. The only way I can replicate your ‘bad sounds’ is if I tighten my throat up to the point where it feels tired after coming up and down one scale. Thanks for the lesson and showing how important tongue placement is to correct voicing.

It is very helpful what you are teaching to us Randall. I would like to know your opinion about doing scales just only with the mouthpiece versus focusing on playing F sharp on the mouthpiece. Blessings for you
@randalclarkmusic4333
@randalclarkmusic4333 3 жыл бұрын
Replicating the feel of concert A in the mouthpiece gets you into the ballpark of great tone. Playing songs and scales on the mouthpiece is good too and teaches you flexibility, and also teaches you how to manipulate the pitch dramatically. But you would normally play set around the concert A. The biggest problem is that people play with too high a pitch on the mouthpiece in general.

@@randalclarkmusic4333 Thanks a lot for your answer. With your information and focusing on F sharp on the mouthpiece, now in the upper register sounds better round and in tune. I have to work in the lower register a bit flat. Blessings for you

The vowel I use changes depending on range I’m in or if I’m using any inflections. Generally an OH sound though.

Depends on which saxophone you are playing. Tenor, alto, soprano, Bari, each have a different voicing pitch.

There really is no “exact” pitch. we’re just trying to get into the “ball park” without being crazy high. Concert G is a good place to start for Tenor. Concert eb flat seems a bit low to me, however depending on your mouthpiece that could work. With your particular set up I would experiment with different pitch levels and then listening to the tone that you’re getting making sure that you have a big open sound but still have enough support. Also play scales and make sure that you’re not going sharp up high and flat down low. Or, in the case of voicing too low make sure that you’re not going flat up high.

@randalclarkmusic4333

Without hearing what you’re doing I can’t really say if that is good for you. Usually people who get pitches below F are voicing too low AND have an embochure that is too relaxed. But again, this could be in the ballpark for you and be just fine. The point is to not have a mouthpiece pitch that is too high. Most people play too high. G is the upper limit. Stay below G. If the tone and Pitch are easy at Eb then that’s fine. I’d say that’s near the lower limit though.
