I think it's the best one besides the original quadrilogy. It took the idea of exploration and more ''gimmicky'' Otherworld from Shattered Memories, improved on the combat from Homecoming, improvised weapons like in Origins and made a mix of things that worked, gave much more care (as much as Konami let them do) and done. If it had more time, less pressure and at least some of the original team giving supervision, we could've got a masterpiece or atleast a cult classic.

Even though it's not the best game in the series, Downpour still holds a special place in my heart. Vatra games was a team from my homeland, Czech Republic, from town Brno to which I hold many great memories and it always felt like such an honor and amazing thing, that team from our small country could make another entry to such big and important game series. I'm glad it was made and I thank to every person in Vatra for that. And as always, amazing work Hikiko!

I replayed it recently and I really appreciated how detailed the indoor areas were, mainly the random houses and buildings in town

Downpour is a great game. The story is solid. Murphy was awesome. You got in detail with the characters. You were given choices on several outcomes. Downpour had the multiple ending Silent Hill is known for. This game has great transitions into the darkness limbo! Awesome details in the surroundings! Fntastic dark grungy town! Let's talk about he basement holy hell!!! Yeah it isn't 2 or 3 by a long shot! I get it. Those are the best. Downpour doesn't hold the scary feeling like the first three games for sure, okay. Downpour can be a bit buggy sometimes. It does have it's flaws like every game. But that's all people do now. They complain. They don't share the fun parts or details they enjoy. They just want to bash or ruin a game's reputation. I remember preordering Downpour and their was constant delays. Probably explains the bugs. That doesn't ruin Downpour! This game was more of a open world or a different approach, which I do appreciate. I love it! I'm tired of all the complaints Downpour doesn't deserve. I was lucky and fortunate enough to get every Silent Hill around release date. I still own every game. If you didn't experience these games growing up when they were new then don't jump on online or this band wagon bashing a title to the Silent Hill series. I'm sick of all this hate Downpour gets. I guarantee at least more than half of the "online reviews" that complain this game were under the age of 5 when Silent Hill 3 came out. They probably never played all the titles to even compare it to. This whole new generation of whiners complaining about a series a real fan base loves really annoys me as a straight up bias Silent Hill fan. Downpour is not a boring game. It isn't scary I'll give you that. But it does have very creepy spots in the story and a dark lore as you progress. The creatures aren't anything out of a nightmare like the previous installments. But all the Silent Hill games never really had any monsters that imposed a threat. They are all original in their own respect. But none of them were amazing or overwhelming. That doesn't mean that everyone doesn't remember them all because of how creepy they are or just plain screwed up. I.E. Legs in Silent Hill 2. In my opinion Silent Hill 2 and 3 are complete masterpieces. I abaolutely love 1 and Homecoming. The fact people bash this game when they probably never invested in it or in the series is just insulting to Silent Hill, not the game Downpour. These kids who "review" them probably are going on their own personal opinions not on the Silent Hill series. They're not comparing it to previous titles. I'm sure there are some who are, and I respect their opinions, but most of this punk kids who bash Downpour online give the true fans who review Silent Hill feelings toward Downpour a bad name. I've met at least dozen people I've worked with who said the exact same thing "Downpour sucks." My response every time, because it gets under my skin is "oh yeah? Tell me a ending? Tell me what the Boogeyman wears?" Everyone I've ever personally met has never been able to tell me an ending. They all say "oh I didn't beat it." Or "oh I just watched it online." Or "I never played it I'll be honest." It's this exact thing that leads to this stupid made up bubble of "Downpour is horrible." It isn't! It's like comparing Resident Evil 2 to Resident Evil 4. It's a different engine, different developers, and different writers. They were aiming for a wider range of audiences in the market. It was a different time when 1, 2, or 3 came out. People love 4: The Room. It is personally my least favorite in the series. But I don't hate it by any means. I like it. I'm not gonna bash it to be a hipster. It's fun and completely different. Just like Downpour. Just enjoy Silent Hill. We don't get many as it is. Things like these punk "reviews" are reasons we don't get much installments in the Silent Hill series. I love Downpour. All my friends who have beaten Downpour for multiple endings or another reason all loved this game. They all share my exact response to so called critics who try to insult Downpour. I'll say it again: alll these "reviews" by wannabe online keyboard warrior critics are punk kids who weren't alive or barely 5-year-olds when a older title like Silent Hill 3 came out. These critics didn't experience these in the times when they were released to appreciate each title changing with the times including the much updated graphics. These critics haven't played all the Silent Hill games. These critics more than likely haven't even played or much less beaten Downpour. Stop complaining about Silent Hill Downpour. This isn't directed toward the channel just to all complainers, but if you still hate it that's toward you too

Your channel is criminally underrated As for the game itself, when it came out I remember really liking the intro and other certain aspects. It's definitely better than Homecoming, and probably the best non-Team Silent made game in the franchise.

I love this game, genuinely. I'd even say it's one of my favorite in the entire series, on par with The Room for sure. Love the story, the two main characters, the open city nature of Silent Hill, the endings, the otherworld, the world design in general. Hell, i can even say that Murphy is one of my all time favorite protags, i relate to him a lot, how i similarly related to Harry both in OG and SM, but mostly OG. And the new soundtrack and sound design might not be the perfection of Yamaoka, sure, but it's still very good. I will die on the hill of calling it an Underrated Diamond in the Rough. Really wish it got a modern re-release, but oh well, at least RPCS3 emulation suffices nicely. Tis a good video, Hikiko-san. Thank you.

I played Homecoming on a CRT back in the day, because of the low res assets. It looked infinite times better.

I really like this game. For me, this Silent Hill is unique and doesnt really try to become the Japanese version of Silent Hill.

PS3 emulation is rad as hell. It really brought new life to some PS3 games that really needed it.

I also have a love-hate story with this game haha while definitely not the worst of the western made SH games it has its own share of flaws like the framerate, glitches and some cringy story choices. I learned to like Homecoming and Downpour a lot more now than I did back in the day when they were released.

Back when video rentals were booming, I rented this and had a somewhat fun time. Mostly with the puzzles. And I hadnt upgraded to a flat screen tv at the time so I basically played it the way you downgraded it. Didn't even know about the choppy frame rate.

Been really enjoying these latest videos when YT decides to push them to me. Great work! The one of these western releases I don't mind is Shattered Memories. I don't take it as a replacement and more as just a reinterpretation of SH1's story with bad chase segments scattered throughout. The plot, characters and small puzzles all feel fine if you just take the game at face value and don't just constantly try and pick on the differences. I also liked the mobile phone mechanic and just wished it was used to more varied degrees. The music also really jumped out at me in my last playthrough. Sadly everything is just too short, railroaded and there's no real replay value in it.

Firstly awesome job, I remember I bought it on launch and was disappointed. I agree with you that if it didn’t have the Silent Hill branding, the game would of had more love.

Nice video! It sounds like you really tried to give this game another chance. I first played Downpour on PS3. It was a horrible experience. The bad below 30 framerate mixed with the horrendous and tedious combat made me drop it after a couple of hours. Glad to see the Xbox version runs well, maybe I'll give that version a try one day.

This is the only silent hill game that i didnt played. I lost all hope after shattered memories . (not that it was a bad game) I guess we all wanted Team Silent.

If I remember correctly, if you play the Xbox version on the Series X without updating the game, it still has unlocked frames.

I liked some of the concepts for the enemies, and ending c was more thoughtful than a lot of others but that’s about it. For silent hill it’s weak but as a stand-alone it’s ok.

This Game was cursed from the moment i put in on My ps3...i waiting for the disc install and what happen install good but never return a message or something it just put the black screen, i have to reset My PS3 but never run the Game i go to the menú for delete and what happen....never show me the icon of the game i was so upset that just let the Game in My library later 3 years....i'm not kidding i just put the disc again and it works why? i don't know.

I'm not actually a fan of Silent Hill, like I get it's a cult game series, but never got my hands on it. Though to this day I'm interested in this subject and who knows maybe one day I'll launch a Silent Hill HD Collection which is totally right way to experience this franchise.

Some of the side quests were kind of fun, that's probably the nicest thing I can say about Downpour. Overall I had a really terrible time with it, my experience was downright miserable. I thought the combat was atrocious, the story and the characters were just kind of there, nothing really interesting or exciting. The game looked ugly, both in terms of design and actual graphics, with monster designs being some of the laziest, blandest trash I've seen in a horror game to this day. It had this budget 7th generation look and feel about it. The music was barely there, mostly just ambient noises, and don't even get me started on Korn. I played the 360 version which, afaik, is supposed to be the more stable one in comparison to the PS3 version, but it still ran like ass. After playing through Homecoming on PC, I thought for sure that no other Silent Hill game will be as terribly optimized as that one, but Downpour almost takes the cake. Thank god it doesn't crash every half an hour or so, I guess. The general consesus seems to be that Downpour would've been received better if it hadn't had the Silent Hill name attached to it, and I suppose I agree somewhat, considering that the game doesn't really feel like SH, it feels like some 'spiritual successor' at best. Then again, how many people would have even played or remembered it to this day if it hadn't been for the SH brand?

It's almost impossible for me to say anything nice about Downpour. You make a good effort here. Me, I find fault primarily with everything around the engine and actual gameplay. It's the story, music, and general presentation that divide everything by zero to equal one big piece of trash. In particular, I strongly dislike Licht's score. If I wanted to imitate Yamaoka, I'd create my own sample library of industrial sounds an atmospheric pads, maybe pull in some of the late '90s wavestation stuff we all recognize and layer it in. If I wanted to imitate Licht imitating Yamaoka, I'd buy Trinity Drums and hold down a key, find moody synth patch one, throw in some mandolin, and get Mary Elizabeth McGlinn to sing over a track. ... But at least it isn't the Book of Memories score, which is just pre-baked loops for mama's spaghetti garbage.

This is going to sound stupid, but did you try setting the PS3 to stay at 720p? I've found most games are optimized for 720p on the PS3 and lose a lot of frame and fidelity when you put them any higher. As for Downpour, being a Silent Hill and Horror Game fan, I bought when it came out but sadly didn't play it until I got my Xbox One x. By then, a lot of the issues were ironed out and it ran fun at 1080p, and I found it quote fun. Since most Survival Horror games have moved toward Action Horror by that time. (Let's be real, Dead Space, RE4, etc were all Action Horror.) I really enjoyed the atmosphere and minor details in the game, where things change the moment they are off screen to screw with you. Such as a the Tire Swing this disappears or becomes a corpse when you look away.

Removing the cult aspect is what killed this game. Just call it "Downpour". Silent Hill has two needed elements, the town and the cult. This is what makes it Silent Hill. Also Downpour basically turned the spooky town into a city

This video almost makes me wanna play the game considering i have ps3 and crt laying around, but at the same time i'm pretty sure that it's not really worth it when you have anything else to do. As a casual fan of SH, I researched a lot before buying this game and pretty much all reactions seemed to indicate that it was an "Okay" if flawed experience. When I finally got it that's pretty much exactly what I got. It has some nice ideas but the execution left something to be desired. Particularly taking away all your guns/equipment for the end game which is always a BS move.

Only game I can digitally purchase from a digital store is Silent Hill 4 as far as I'm aware, available on GOG. I know you can play Silent Hill 2 on PC as well, but I think to be honest you can only officially purchase a physical copy of the game. I could only get Silent Hill HD collection(I know people say its not the best way to play 2 and 3, don't need to hear that again) physical as well on the PS3. Its just crazy the only options really available to buy these games are. I mean MGS4 still only really available on the PS3, which I did manage to get the Limited Edition copy of the game last year, which did come with the documentary of the development process of the game which was cool. The way Konami is handling these games is poor. I mean I don't really know if the digital version of these games were brought back that they removed(if people still remember they did remove digital version of the HD collection of the MGS games). Konami infuriates me. Edit: You can also get Silent Hill: Homecoming on Steam as well, but haven't really considered playing that one.

Origins, Homecoming, and Shattered Memories are my favorites. Sue me lol. Homecoming has the best combat. Downpour felt like a step back in combat.

I've seen a lot of people covering this game lately... I think it's a fine horror game overall, there's some elements of it that I really like including exploring the town with more freedom than ever before But it's still kind of felt like a clunky overall experience, the other world segments really weren't that exciting, the enemy design was pretty uninspired for a Silent Hill game, and the plot was a bit by the numbers I enjoyed it enough to beat It. But it's never a title I'm going to revisit

downpour looked blurry back when it came out - now thats just normal for most games (thanks mainly to crappy TAA rendering) in hindsight it was downright ahead of its time graphically, it and to a bit lesser extent Alan Wake. new Resident Evil games these days still looks like an enhanced downpour.

...But really though... Murphy's Law wouldn't have been a bad name for that game. Honestly I probably would have picked it up to try it especially if they pulled some, "inspired by Silent Hill" or "spiritual sequel to Silent Hill: Homecoming" right? I was ALWAYS looking for games that claimed to be like Silent Hill and even if I didn't like Homecoming as much as the others something taking a stab at that idea without having to be IN that canon, that's where a studio can really shine and make something cool. Oh well.

Just my personal opinion, don't pretend to sound rude. I'm a huge Silent Hill fan, this franchise really managed to "touch" me deep inside. I'm an older player that was introduced to SH via Silent Hill 2 when it was released. I enjoyed all the first four games, and out of them I even liked SH0 (if you just don't pay atention to the crappy plot and the PH ripoff it's a good game). But this... thing. AGH. SORRY but I really do think that you, estadounidenses, destroyed the franchise ^^UUUUUUUUUUUU For those who like the game: IT'S OKAY. But it's not Silent Hill. Silent Hill was something else. Something very well thought out and with studied scripts. Meaningful stories that linked together, a common atmosphere, careful designs... But since the franchise changed hands, all that went down the drain. The scripts became simple, full of mistakes or downright ridiculous. (Does anyone remember the girl from Homecoming who tells Alex that a lot of people were disappearing and strange things were happening... And she says it to him in the safest enviroment she managed to find to hang posters of missing people; IN THE MIDDLE OF A FOGGY NIGHT, next to some crashed police cars full of blood and with beasts howling two meters away... Girl...) and repetitive (How many mistery children do you think we need to chase now? Don't you think there are enough sexy nurses? Where else are you going to put the PH or a cousin of him? To those who like the game, I repeat that it's OK, but this is not Silent Hill. It's just a game that should have been called Downpour and that's all.
