Yes! Finally, you got to react to this. The outfits are made by BALIK BATIK a company that merges Filipino textile and modern design for modern use. If I remember correctly, each member uses a particular fabric handwoven by a specific tribe in the Philippines. Example: Ken has PISYABIT design which is handwoven by a tribe called Tausug located in SULU (an island far south of the Philippines). In our country, we have a lot of tribes and each tribe has its own culture which includes having their own way of weaving clothes and they also have their own design.

STELL'S OUTFIT It features INAUL a traditional handwoven fabric made in Maguindanao (it's located in southern part of the Philippines) We have 3 major islands in the Philippines Luzon (North), Visayas (Middle) and Mindanao (South). Maguindanao is part of the major island Mindanao.

The boys donned outfits made of handwoven fabrics from various parts of the Philippines, and in doing so, honored our rich Filipino heritage. And they look amazing on them. Pablo, Josh and Stell wore outfits made from Inaul, a traditional handwoven fabric of Maguindanao weaved in Cotabato. Ken wore Pisyabit, a handwoven fabric of the Tausug ethnic group of Sulu. Justin wore an outfit made of Yakan handwoven fabric from Basilan's ethnic group known for their vibrant weaving tradition. All of these ethnic groups can be found in Mindanao, the 2nd largest island that comprises the Philippines. Incidentally, Ken is from Pagadian City in Zamboanga, which is in Mindanao. For a time, these outfits were put in display by Batik Batik in their pop up in Mandaue City, Cebu.

I think their best costume that embodies our culture was when they performed in Cultural Center of the Philippines. In this Go Up, they incorporated the different weaves from different regions. To keep our rich culture and weaving industry alive, to promote this, famous fashion designers were encouraged to use them and exhibit during the trading convention for global consumption.

About Ken being “moreno” (dark skinned), he said in one interview that when he was young, he didn’t also liked how his voice is so deep that he couldn’t sing high parts like an ordinary guy. He actually hated it. Now many years later, who knew that these are his attributes that will make him stand out in the group.

Handwoven fabrics are what Filipinos wore during the olden times. Until the 1850s when the more inexpensive cotton was introduced. It was actually the British who imported cotton. We still wear clothes with these fabrics only on special occasions because the fabric is expensive. BTW, IT'S PABLO'S BIRTHDAY TOMORROW! 🎉😊

For the first time in decades, Rizal Park was almost void of people or tourists, all 58 hectares of it. And yes, it's really postcard pretty. The National Museum is just a stone's throw away. The editing of Go Up, the merging of 2 places, was so seamless. It was just a few months into them going viral when the Covid-19 and the subsequent lockdown happened, and SB19 used the social media and the internet to the hilt. They were the only group that was able to have an online concert and it was sold out. Because of this, they remained visible, relevant and on top of everything.

The color palette and the patterns in their outfits were taken from the different indigenous tribes of the country, mostly from the Southern/Muslim part. Alab is a favorite of mine. I’ll never get tired of it. 😊

I love how SB19 introduces our history and culture, which tbh is getting lost, I can hardly name the different tribes and what those fabrics represents, a great nudge to revisit these part of our culture, thanks SB19 💙💙💙💙💙 please watch their TV Guestings vlogs, I find them interssting as it gives a peek at what it’s like behind the scene❤

They're wearing pre colonization inspired outfits. Since the Philippines is an archipelago, we have a lot of ethnic groups. The more colorful and complex the patterns are, shows royalty status.

Our national costume is the barong tagalog and filipiniana. What they wore here were inspired by the southern part of the Philippines where the most Muslims are. These colorful outfits are an adaptation from indonesians, malaysian who came to the Philippines. We are an archipelago so we are the melting pot of cultures in SEA.

This era was, I think, the most slow-moed Stell ever! He looked stunning in this physique. I will always miss the bulky Stell. He's most handsome this way for me, and that outfit was perfect, esp. for his body build. I think their costumes represent different regions of the country. I could only remember Stell's being from the southern part of the country (Mindanao) which is Muslim-inspired. Although I don't think Filipinos would wear this outfits on a regular day. But I could see this worn on special and formal national occasions.

The statue behind them - during Go Up - is the monument for our national hero, Jose Rizal. He spoke out against the Spaniards, and was arrested, jailed and ultimately assassinated by firing squad in that specific square/park. If I’m not mistaken, it has soldiers on watch 24/7 (you notice the sentries during the dance).

Hi Hurraira, their costumes are modern takes on traditional garments of pre-colonial and/or Muslim Filipinos. They shot in front of our National Museum (for Alab) and in front of the monument of our National Hero Jose Rizal (for Go Up). These locations are within Rizal Park where Rizal (who stood up against our Spanish colonizers) was executed in the end of the 19th century. Hope this helps. And I hope. You are. Doing. Well. 😉

These OOTDs they were wearing were a glimpse of the past culture with a modern twist of the present. Traditional costumes worn by the royals - the rajas and datus from the South of the Philippines merged with diverse styles of the neighboring southeastern kingdomhoods. It suit them to a T as NCCA ambassadors. Justin, in a way of being goofy describing these styles as MJ, Aladdin, Mulan, Genshin was bloody right on point though. 😊

Hi, Hurraira! I've been following you for a while now and really enjoy your SB19 reactions. :) Just wanted to provide you with a quick background on Ken's feelings towards his skin color. Colorism is strong in the Philippines. Due to colonization, being "mestiza" (fair skin) was heralded as a beauty standard. Those who have darker skin are mostly looked at as "poor" because "only those who work under the sun all day can get that dark." This is why skin whitening products and glutathione shots are popular in the country. There's already a pushback on this idea because of progressiveness around the subject. The majority of people, especially the younger generations, are now more comfortable with their dark skin, celebrating it instead of being ashamed. I hope this helps!

I'm not an expert of my own cultural clothing but what I could figure out is that their outfits is the stylized or modernized versions. What remains traditional here are the materials or fabrics and the designs that came from the different tribes in the Philippines from north to south. I'm not sure if each of them were appropriated with the cultural design from where they're from since the 4's roots are around the same area but it looks like Ken's is (he's from Mindanao). I must say though that whoever the designer of their outfits was, did a very good job...and I'm not sure if it's the same person who designed their awesome all-white outfits when the represented the Philippines again to the ASEAN Round Festival hosted by S.K.

Alab the song is not my taste, but GIRL… the dance practice for it has me in a chokehold. Idk the choreo is just so good and satisfying! And the all white outfits against the rainbow background.. and of course the synchronicity. It’s really worth it to check out! It seems underrated. Along with Sundin Ng Puso (Pepsi ad) dance practice. I guess any and all of their dance practices that have a still camera and no editing are just the best. You already watched and appreciate their What one. I’m begging them to do more like those

The Philippines have 3 tradional Filipino costumes. The Barong Tagalog for men (SB19 wears them during their visits to Philippine consulates as Youth Ambassadors for NCCA and Sentro Rizal), and the Meztiza (a long dress with butterfly sleeves) and the Baro't Saya, meaning "blouse and skirt", which is the more older one as it combines elements from both the precolonial native Filipino and colonial Spanish clothing styles. Baro't Saya can be elaborate, as one can accessorize it with a veil with small tiara, an Alampay or swatch and you have to either carry a white handkerchief or a hand fan, which was used to cover the mouth when laughing or smiling. Hahahaahhaa. Triva on the hanky. Sweethearts were not allowed to do public display of affections, so they should not be holding hands. They used the handkerchief instead where they each hold an end. Unfortunately, unlike Korean, Chinese or Japanese women who still wear their costumes even in their everyday lives, we don't do that anymore. We just wear them on special occasion, like weddings. And during beauty pageants, especially international competitions, expect our candidates to wear the more modern Meztiza style.

I had always thought then that Go Up and Alab were better showcased here musically than each of their original MVS. I wish people would refer this video to casuals who want to hear Go Up and Alab for the first time. The beautiful fluidity and synchronicity of SB19's dance moves are wow in the midst of their different attires. You are right in saying that their moving as one is more highlighted when they are looking so varied. Btw, Ken's favorite color is black and Josh is red. I just don't know about Stell, Pablo, and Justin 😄😁😊.

The outfits the guys are wearing are a newer interpretation of traditional clothing and therefore not commonly seen or worn. Justin’s shirt is a more casual version and there has been a bit of trend going that way-incorporating a bit of traditional woven fabrics into everyday clothing-but mostly in women’s fashion. I hope that becomes more popular though. SB19 is definitely doing their part in promoting it.

They are culturally inspired costumes. The Philippines has diverse regions where you can find native fabrics that are so colorful and intricately designed and woven. As fitting for this occasion, their stages are iconic places/buildings in city of Manila - the first one is the National Museum of Natural History at Rizal Park which houses many galleries (renovated and opened to the public around 2019); the second, at the Luneta park (also Rizal Park) with the the monument of our country's national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal , as a backdrop. The inside of the National Museum of Natural History was the setting for one of their live MAPA videos, I remember you you wondering about this beautiful artistic setting in white.

Luneta is our national park almost similar to Central Park of NY. It holds the monument of our national hero Dr. Jose Rizal he is quite famous you"ll find his monument in smaller scale in some parts of Europe where he made a significant impact. The zoning in this area during the commonwealth era (when we were still under the US wing) if were followed would have a similar look like to the Capitol of Washintlgton DC but after the WW2 didn't push through due to budget. So around the area you wil see a lot of neoclassical buildings like the National Museum used to be the senate house, Main Post Office which was razed by fire very recently, The Manila Hotel which was the official residence of Gen. Douglas McArthur. Also the Luneta Hotel where former US President Eisenhower stayed a general in the past but later deployed in Europe. Then there is the Manila Bay, in the past the affluent family would have a Mansion with the view of the bay. Most of them were razed to the ground during the war.

In the Philippines, if it’s not during the winter months and not in the cool mountains, long sleeves are just not recommended. It’s just too warm. So what they’re wearing is not ideal. Though there are some places were it can go down to 2 deg. Celcius in the night. If I remember correctly, the clothes were designed specifically for them and, in fact, Justin personally designed his shirt. Modern clothes with traditionally woven cloth incorporated in the design.

Yeah unfortunately, the beauty standards in the Philippines is messed up just like anywhere else. Darker skin is very looked down upon, and there is a thriving skin care industry that sells whitening products. One of my biggest wishes is that Stell never whitened his skin. Per old pictures and videos, it seems that his skin has whitened the most out of the boys. Of course the lighting in the pictures, quality of the old cameras, and general tanning because of how much sun exposure he’s been having- those variables probably also contribute to the color difference. But it’s no secret that he uses products that lighten the skin and he is so much more fair-skinned than when he was a kid :( But I don’t blame him. He was bullied a lot for his general looks, and probably his skin color was part of that. It just makes me sad.

The costumes are neo-traditional. The geometrical patterns are inspired by tribal traditional clothing from all over the country. The bright colours are representative of the southern Moro traditional attire. I'm sorry these are so vague, but in neo-traditional fashion tend to be inspired by various tribes and cultures that it's hard to pinpoint the exact origin - especially if you're not very familiar with all the traditional clothing - which I'm not. I have a general idea of what colour scheme and what patterns belong to which tribe but not the specifics.

ken's comment on his skin is sadly rooted in the colorism that's in ph society 😥 growing up in the 90s/early 2000s the messaging was always that being moreno (or tanned) was bad/ not good looking and most celebrities on tv were always light skinned. there's been a lot of pushback against that way of thinking and nowadays people are trying to celebrate moreno skin more but the thinking's not completely gone, sad to say.
