I used to hate it, but I can't imagine One Piece in any other art style. I do still have many problems with the pacing though, And I feel the same way about Clamp. In both cases its artists exaggerating proportions to suit the world of the story. One Piece is wacky and weird and Clamp is potentially disturbing as fuck with shit-tons of magic bullshit and connecting storylines that twist your brain if you let them(anime has made joking about pedofilia a thing, but Clamp made it real).

I used to hate it a lot until I got into animation and realized how a lot of One Piece’s art takes a lot from Disney films and Osamu Tezuka. I love how Oda draws characters in all manner of shapes, sizes and styles. All the characters look so unique yet they all still look like they come from the same world. It’s a fantastic art style, imo.

Gon's design isn't great, but it's also not bad enough to stop someone from watching the show. What really disappoints me about Pat refusing to watch HxH is that I think he'd really appreciate how ruthless Gon can be.

Captain Rish To be fair (and this is something that even the anime points out), a character's defining traits should not be their color scheme when they are in a black-and-white manga. If you were to just show Gintoki's silhouette, he would look pretty generic, save for the one hanging sleeve.

i wouldn't agree about naruto. sure half way through part one he generic but by then he gets his act together and is actually a completely different character by the end of the series. look at goku from chapter 1 to super and he really is basically almost exactly the same. same could be said about ichigo as well. naruto is a good and interesting character by part 2 and even better in boruto now since hes the 7th hokage and a father. since he got his goal his new one now has a father is protect his family. you dont really get that much in Shonen main characters. ( littlerly JoJo is the only other series that i can think of )

I'm a big dumb fan of stupid stuff. I love Goku because he's so simple and almost stupid, because he stands out. I also like Luffi because of that, even though I don't like One Piece I appreciate his character. But i'd say both Orange-Blue Ninja School outfit Naruto and Gon are just super ugly and unappealing to look at, period, without even getting into their characters. A big part is the hair, the only big Shonen character I can think of whose hair is truly weird and fits the "giant misshapen" stereotype of shounen protagonist hair is Goku, but even then it is unique looking and always complimented his appearances, whether it be his stubby kid appearance in DB or his gi-wearing adult appearance. It also fits Toriyama's artstyles, both exaggerated Dragon Ball and muscle-bound but realistic DBZ artstyles, really well, and Krillin/Piccolo are really good contrasts because they have no hair. Gon and first arc Naruto are just both plain unappealing in their designs. Naruto's first outfit is awful, it's needlessly baggy and the nod to DBZ only works because he looks like a kid and seems like he'd dress that way if he had to dress himself. He also looks a lot better when his outfit isn't so baggy and misshapen-looking, same with Sasuke - they both have really ugly first arc outfits, but as soon as they swap them out, they look a million times better, I honestly think that Naruto's best outfit is his Shippuden orange-black gi. Gon just looks bad period though. His hair is misshapen, not in an appealing or unique way, and his face and tiny spindly body don't compliment it at all. And then you put him next to Killua for the majority of the show who has comparatively normal, basic, Gintoki-ass hair, and he just stands out so much in a bad way.

Generalve naruto starts out way more interesting than when the series ends. He loses all of his fun and relatable qualities by the time shipuuden starts

in part one he whines and has the "i dont get it all through part 1. in prt 2 he becomes more mature and is smart when doing things thorough his own explanation rather then the technically of books. and by the the time he is hokage he becomes wise, is a father (something again rare for shonens ) and is the status of old man badass legends in the shonens. how is kid naruto more interesting then that.

Shonen protagonist get Mickey Mouse syndrome where their appearance is meant to be iconic and widespread because they are drawn the most, and appear on all the magazine covers. Which means they are the character in the cast with the simplest design and are more symbol than character (example: Mickey Mouse's ears, Goku's Hair, and Yugi's hair often break reality to maintain a distinctive profile). Kenshiro doesn't even escape this, because out of the cast of fucking weirdos that is The Fist of the North Star, he has easily the least freaky design.

Well if you ever watched Hunter x Hunter you would know that there is like 5 main characters doing their own stories away from Gon not everyone is doing it for Gon or with him. Everyone has their own story example being Kurapika. Hell the main "villian" isn't even beaten by Gon or any battle for that matter. Gons design is meant to be simplistic but in no way is a "bad" design if anything given the the story is the perfect design choice thematically. Jayness clamp has alot of good art. I dont like X, but Sakura was well done. And Tsubasa had great art at the beginning.

Gear Fourth was meant to look cool? I thought it was meant to be like, strong but Goofy like Bluto in Popeye. The cool ones are maybe the admirals like Issho.

I got the impression that it was supposed to look imposing and powerful, though maybe "cool" wouldn't be the right word. As for the Admirals, Kuzan and Borsalino are definitely not meant to be cool in terms of design, what with the sleeping mask and the attitude respectively. Sakazuki and Issho, however, yeah. I'd say this is Oda's attempt at cool working.

Gear 4 is supposed to look goofy. Doflamingo even laughs at it when it first appears. Most characters underestimate it because it doesn't look practical.

I hate the normal design of Tsuna, but I love his actual fighting design with the dying will flames. It's a small change that makes a world of difference; the eyes too I guess.

The frustrating thing about Tsuna is that he starts as an ordinary, wimpy kid. But the manga ends and you still have that same wimpy kid when he's been trained for months to be a mafia boss. So I totally agree with you about his design.

Sploogmaster2 I’m guessing that a lot of the magic in Fairy Tail is so vastly different from each other that it takes a while to perfect your skill in a single category. Based on that, it would be better to be a master of one than a jack-of-all trades, because doing the latter means you won’t even be slightly capable in any form of magic. Nah, you're probably right. I was just annoyed because I followed the manga for years and it recently ended. I only read it because I had for so long. It just really had a wierd way of doing things. It never set up proper rules for magic, literally everyone had a different magic, and power was super bullshit. Like it was set up like JoJo or HunterxHunter so everyone had unique magic that had strengths and weaknesses, but no. Natsu bodied everyone with shear brute force and luck. Erza was the strongest at the guild because she had a non specific amount of weapons and armor she could make that could could do what ever. Also, these teenagers are leagues stronger than elder mages with decades of experience, cause reasons. It was kinda fun to read because the plot line went to cray places sometimes (alternate universes, time travel, ghosts and demons) but it was pretty bad as far as tropes went.

if it wasn't for the hat scars on his face and chest and his jean shorts and rubber body and now abs I would hate his design but hes a lot going for him..luffy in anything still looks good..hes meant to be the average every day Asian boy...he also looked amazing vs lucci during ennies lobby..that shirt and jean short combination was fire..his shirt was more red and buttoned and stylish and more formal looking than normal and his dark blue greyish looking jean shorts more like light black looked amazing and different enough compared to his usual attire at that point of the series where he wore the same outfit for like 5 major arcs in a row..now he changes every arc but back then it was special to see him in a new uniform and the only way oda could pull it off is by making it look like a similar color scheme and making it look awesome..cant go from his normal first 200 episode look to the one he wore at thriller bark or amazon lilly..he would get so much backlash for ruining his look..the ones he wore at ennies lobby and sabaody were amazing

It is a thematic subversion of the Super Saiyan trope. Typical super Saipan is a triumphant moment when a shone protagonists finds within themselves the power needed to surpass the obstacle -mostly the big bad of the arc- so that good may triumph over evil. Gon's transformation it is neither triumphant nor a good thing. It happened when the situation was so hopeless for him that he just broke.

Because when Goku goes super saiyan, it's awesome. When Gon goes man-mode, it's terrifying.

A child did the equivalent of bartering his soul for power just to brutalize and utterly destroy his hated enemy without a shred of morals, and fucking himself up so beyond horribly a literal wish making machine was needed or he was a shriveled corpse on a bed for the rest of his days.

That's because CLAMP only did the character designs and they were not involved in the actual animation or art direction.
