I saw how overgrown this sidewalk was and had to pull over to knock on the homeowners door. The homeowner's son answered and I offered to clean it up completely free for them. They said I could and I came back first thing the next morning to start. Not only does this type of work help to increase the curb appeal of the home, but it allows the sidewalk to be more accessible for the neighbors and for people that need it.

Spencer, my sister and I have a genetic disease called Ehlers Danlos Syndrome and I walk using smart crutches, though at the moment I use my baby son’s pushchair to walk with, and my sister uses an electric wheelchair. I just want to say, on behalf of the less-able people in the community, THANK YOU so much. That sidewalk would have been impassable for anyone in a wheelchair, on crutches, or indeed pushing any children along in prams/pushchairs etc. Especially with that weed tree growing right out across it. Without your work, we would have to travel on the road, and that is more dangerous by far. I really hope you get to read this and realise just how grateful I am, as I’m sure all users of the sidewalks you clear are!

@@psn64sat63 - It varies from town to town. Some towns 100% own the sidewalks, land and all. And most of them do a decent job maintaining them. Other towns will put sidewalks on the homeowners land whether they want them there or not. This essentially makes your land a 'public' thoroughfare, and those towns usually also demand that the homeowners maintain them. In jusrisdictions where it snows, there are towns that fine the property owner for every day they don't clear the snow and ice. Imagine shoveling a couple hundred feet of sidewalk, then having a plow bury it again! In many places, people who slip and fall on 'your' sidewalk can sue you. In fact there are people who make a living doing exactly that.

@@psn64sat63 As you said, it all depends upon where you live. The expectation is, the sidewalk, your driveway and the apron ARE the individual homeowner's responsibility. Point of fact, the sidewalk in front of my neighbor's home and in front of my sister's home is beginning to crack due to a tree planted by the city we live in. When the walkway began to get cracks due to tree roots, an inspector from the city said if it got any worse, they (the homeowners) would need to replace the walkway. My sister opined, if I didn't plant the tree and I can't remove the tree, why am I responsible for the sidewalk cracking due to this tree? It was reiterated she would need to replace the sidewalk if it got any worse. I agree, the homeowner should have been taking care of the sidewalk and should have been made to clean this up. I do my own grass cutting, edging and trimming with basic homeowner tools; a battery operated weed eater, an electric weed eater, an electric grass/leaf blower, and a gas push mower. I don't have high end tools so I have to stay on top of my game. (Obviously I can't use my electrified blower, weed eater in the rain or if the ground is wet.)

@@psn64sat63 I just wrote a thank you, as someone who relies on smart crutches, and with a sister in an electric wheelchair. Even as a mom, out pushing my son in his pushchair, I would have had to go into the road to get around that. He is doing a great service to the community by doing these makeovers. It makes such a difference to me personally, because it only takes a couple of millimetres change under the outside of my foot and I dislocate my ankles. I agree with you. About 12 years ago I needed to temporarily use a wheelchair. I looked at the world in a whole new way after realizing the things that handicapped people have to endure daily. That taught me a huge lesson and I am a huge advocate for handicapped people. My apartment building did not have a handicap parking space so after I got done with them, they got one. Anywhere I see without handicap parking or improper accessibility, I make my phone calls and things do change. As for sidewalks, I think the city should be more on top of them being maintained, especially for handicapped people. The city should give them a warning and if they don’t clean up their sidewalk, the city should do it and charge the homeowner.

Lawn creep is inevitable due to the overfill for compaction. The best way to slow it down is to get you grade down and decrease pitch of slope to hardscape about a mowers width wide. It's amazing that "the city" (the council) doesn't look after the sidewalks (footpaths). They grind down steps where the concrete has moved to ensure no-one trips and its safe over here in Australia. From the road in to the property boundary is "council property" and is the responsibility of council to maintain. Having said that, most people do mow this area & consider it something they should mow. It does mean you can't plant trees or gardens in that area.

That's what I was thinking, here in Canada this work would be done by the "town workers" and would never get to this stage of being so overgrown. Same goes for the first 6' of any property from the road; its the homeowners responsibility to mow and shovel snow, but they don't own the first 6' of land, this is so they can always build sidewalks etc if they need to. Interesting stuff

Agreed. Our local municipal government takes responsibility for sidewalk maintenance. Homeowners are only responsible for snow removal in winter (with hefty fines if you don't clear it within the first few hours of a snowfall - which would be impossible with sidewalks such as the one shown here.) Otherwise sidewalk maintenance is paid for through property taxes. I've watched several SB Mowing sidewalk clearing videos, and am always shocked with how unkempt they are allowed to become in the State(s) where SB shoots his videos. That would definitely violate Property Standards bi-laws up here. I have to believe it is a result of an aversion to paying taxes because cities elsewhere in the world are apparently better funded to maintain their public spaces.

@@pow_dunx true. Every city I know of it’s the homeowners responsibility for maintaining the looks. It’s also the homeowners responsibility to call to get it fixed should it be broken up. Most people do not realize they are paying extra taxes for the sidewalks it’s comes under property improvement and many times the city has to post this if they are going to build sidewalks in a residential area because it increases taxes

You are such an inspiration to watch. Thank you for your hard work, your kindness to strangers, and your overall attitude toward helping out your community. As a disabled person, I can only imagine how what you do for so many less fortunate, means to them. In this particular job, I would have loved to have seen the fenceline transformed with some weed-eating on the other side of the fence, but I understand the homeowner didn't want you in the backyard. Still an amazing job. May God continue to bless you and your work. And congratulations on your upcoming wedding in July. May you both have many happy years together.

I am always surprised by local town regulations that these people do not have to maintain their sidewalks. I feel like in a lot of places you would rack up fines for this or be forced to pay your town to have it cleared. Unmaintained sidewalks can lead to different types of accidents.

Love your videos. I just want to say thankyou. You brought back a memory that I had buried away along time ago. And yes here goes another one of those stories. When I was around 10yrs old. It was a hot summer day, and I wanted to go swimming at my Dad's boss's pool. My Dad was edging our side walks. Being a brat , I kept asking. We didn't get to go. I was so mad at my Dad. But now that I look back at that time. Dad kept saying that as soon as I get done , we'll go. Instead of telling me No , I still had that hope , that we would go. On March 10th 2016 , my Dad took his life. I was a Daddys girl. It's been hard to forgive my Dad for that , and you gave me a reason to remember something nice that my Dad did , for not coming straight out and saying No to going swimming. 💔

That is so crazy! Where I live in SE Coastal Virginia, we don’t really have this problem because most people have fescue lawns. You are doing the entire community a big favor especially when you make the sidewalks accessible to everyone.
