Lee boards with hydrofoil wings -> less ballast , greater SA / displacement ratio => faster , improved righting arm , improved stability and enables shoal draft cruising - allowing settling on tidal flats comfortably like a bilge keeler -> avoid cost of haul outs . A revolutionary concept . Well done !

Lee Boards with wings, wow what a difference this makes. Taking an old idea and improving on it makes perfect sense. The advantages of this system far out weigh the added mechanical and electronic components needed to make this system work. I am impressed.

This will definitely find any weak links in your rigging. I'm no engineer but generating lift against the push of the mast should result in some major forces on lines and the add on stabilizers. A yacht with this built into the keel may be a nice option. Someone should jump on it. I'm not a big sailor but love my boats. I can definitely appreciate the idea.

Ok.. Heres what I see: 1. Stability while moving and stationary. I put this first as this is a big concern for many people. 2. Lift while sailing to enter planing faster. 3. Vessel kept upright in order to keep more wind on the sails (Put your hands up if you've blown gear on a catamaran cos you didn't depower in time!). 4. Light show from the plankton bio-luminescence hahaha. 5. More balance trim on sails/rudder with lee foil down. I love this concept. There is a good market for this for sure. I'd love to sail something with this. Just look at the other crazy things that racers and cruisers put into their boats.

I love it. Will it work or be durable or cost effective, I don't know. However, the ability to reduce rolling at an anchorage or dock is alone worth looking into it unless you have never spent days at an anchorage rolling your guts out.

I enjoyed the Calculus, Geometry and Physics lecture. I have found most of the information on the internet is like getting a weather forecast. Everyone repeats what they have heard; no one verifies the facts or even knows what the facts are. Allow me to ask you a simple physics question; take two round objects the same length and size, both have the same nose cone similar to a jet aircraft. Object A; starts the gradual curve to the end (tail/stern) point at 50% of the length. Object B; starts the gradual curve to the end (tail/stern) point at 75% of the length. Simple Question: which object is faster given everything else is constant; Object A or Object B. Last question what is making Object A or B slower given everything else is the same (constant)?

I've long suspected our old yachts will soon be obsolete, and various types of foils will become the norm. And of course the outrigger has existed for thousands of years - you can throw on some extra sail and cruise at a flatter attitude... Jolly good show, chaps! Best wishes!

You conceived the engineering, built a prototype, recorded demonstrations, prepared this video and uploaded it here in 2016 - all before the last AC races (35th) even started! This foil system shares the conceptual flaws of the AC75 foil system. I find but two differences: - Your L foils may have lower induced drag vis-a-vis T foils. - Your foil's righting moment is lower, unless you use an S lever like the AC75. That said, your claim for creating the foil system seems to be quite solid.

One of the benefits of a mono-hull sailboat is that it can dump the wind-force through a full- or semi-knockdown from unexpected gust strength or too few reefs. With this system it seems that the boat will not be able to dump the wind-force which will put catamaran like forces on the mast and rigging. Would you not then need to constantly cycle through sail changes with this system as you do with catamarans? Would mono-hulls need to be engineered with stronger mask and rigging to account for the increase in forces? Also, in the unfortunate case of a capsize how do these wings affect the boat's righting moments for self-righting?
@EdmundRobinson

The boat should self right with the wings, as long as they are relatively light weight. However, the idea of radically reducing the keel weight as shown would definitely reduce the ability to self right.

A rig which permits instant reefing meets this requirement. A modern junkrig / wingsail hybrid meets this requirement, and improves sailing in many ways, such as by providing a more reliable rig, better efficiency to windward, and eliminating free standing sails which must be fought to the deck and replaced at great effort with other sails.

I see a lot of problems. Reducing your displacement boat probably won't do very much to increase your speed as it induces a lot of drag, especially if it's not lifting the boat a whole lot cause it's a displacement boat. Now you need to be running a high power pump to move the foils all the time, so a generator is required. "For cruising" yeah how are you docking with those wings??? Stability is probably true, that's just more wing surface in the water. The pitch one is really what hurts. Boats sail much faster if they are allowed to rock up and down waves, and many performance boats aim to reduce weight aloft to assist with this rocking motion. If their system is designed to damp it, that's drastically hurting your speed in waves. I don't hate the idea, I really enjoy sailing on very high performance boats, and want one for cruising. That said if your system claims sit do everything well, it doesn't do anything well in my experience.

Here in the Netherlands our old sail freighters (froom 1800 orso) used a more simple and rugged system. on both sides,the ship has a large vertical dropshaped blade that can be lowered according to nessecity.. The dropping and hoisting is done using a rope and some blocks. the tear shape with the rotation in the point of the tear makes it possible to partially lower the blade if neccesairy. The system showcased here is very ispace consuming and unnecessary complex.

That is similar, but does not provide vertical lift of a horizontal foil, so not as much righting moment to counteract the horizontal force of the sail. Also the type of board you describe goes back many more centuries, and was an early way steering was done.

Wrong. Have you ever been on a cruising cat or tri? Way more space. I had a 33 ft cat for years I had at a dock. Never had any issues. Folding tri's work great at a dock and have as much space inside as any keelboat. So seems to me w8stral2 you have little if any experience with multihulls.
@funtosail
@funtosail 6 жыл бұрын
What the freak are you talking about there are several manufacturers of folding tri's one of which is Corsair. There are a lot of folding tri's our on the water. I see them every time I sail on the coast, and also see a lot of big cats in Marinas as well. And what is with the name calling now. We are talking sailboats, nothing terribly serious. Relax and take a deep breath.

@funtosail

I know the w8stral2 person desperately needs to go on a vacation and maybe have an enema done. Sorry to say his so called FACTs are only facts inside his little mind. And no the VAST MAJORITY of tris are not non-folding. I do this for a living and live it each day, so I know. As for other tris and cats needing 2 slips, well like I care. If you can not afford that then buy a slow boring monohull (I actually like slow boring monohulls). And no multihulls do not lack volume compared to a monohulls, one hull, two hulls, three hulls. Now if you are talking hull designs... displacement, semi-displacement, etc. then that is another discussion. If one comes aboard a big cruising cat and then goes on a keelboat, its obvious which one is more spacious, etc. The cat feels like an aircraft carrier, and the keelboat feels like a submarine. Not to mention when a keelboat is under way and heeling, its useful space is reduced, but not so on a cruising cat or tri. Anyhoo w8stral2 thinks he knows what he is talking about but we will let him live in his little made up world.

It's expensive, vulnarable and inpractical when docking/in harbours etcetera. Maybe good for braking records in ocean races, but most of these racers do not stay in one peace and often have big problems with this kind of systems. For cruisers it's a nonsense solution for a problem that does not exist. Another system that can break and requires maintanace. When it breaks in bad wether conitions in high seas; you have a BIG problem wich I would not want to have in the middle of the ocean.
